Not true - lots of boomers around, by Boomers definition
: a person born in the U.S. following the end of World War II (usually considered to be in the years from 1946 to 1964)

No, we aren't! Wait, let me pinch myself to see if I am still alive. Ouch! And for the record, this boomer is pro turbo. Don't paint us all with the old retro grouch type cast. Some of us are techies.

Oh, so you're one of those who thinks the new Tundra should be carbureted!

    # bring back the points and condensers. NOT! I actually love the modern tech. Cars are far better now than the "good old days".

Toyota rushed this truck to market waaaaay too soon without the requisite testing etc ??
Was just at my local Toyota dealer yesterday looking around and all they had was one "mannequin" 22 Tundra Limited in Lunar Rock. Beautiful truck- not for sale. I just sold my 03 and was struck by the amount of hard plastic parts everywhere on the 22's. I am shopping all brands.

Weber carbs like my old 71 Datsun 240z had. Always wondered why the engine said Nissan on it.

    Pfft, stoopid boomer.

Us millennials are born of a better time with the smog pumps and 130hp big-blocks. The 70's was where it's at!

Uh, 70s would be Gen X. Millennials don't start until 80s.

All the "generations" are a marketing tool anyway. They have no real bearing on who somebody is because we are all individuals. It's just another tribe to divide into, and it's silly. I can find you idiots and geniuses, angels and assholes, across the generations or any other arbitrary division. We are all people, and people haven't changed.

As for the Tundra, the launch has been rough, and the why doesn't matter much. It's been a bit of a mess and everyone gets to decide how much that matters to them. Nobody else gets to spend your money for you, so we all get to choose for ourselves. Now if others can quit thinking their input on somebody else's purchase is worth more than a fart in the wind, then there might be less bickering.

I don't want any vehicle to run poorly or have issues. I hope everyone's vehicle purchases are a wild success, but I'm not in the market right now so I'm just :stirthepot:.

Unfortunately most do not think that keeping the V8 at least as the main motor was realistic option due to ever increasing CAFE standard mandates.
The 5.7 is a lot of great things, but fuel efficient is not one of them. Toyota considered dropping the Tundra model completely from US Market circa 2014 over CAFE , but it got worked out.

Here's are the latest proposed increases: https://www.nhtsa.gov/press-releases/fuel-economy-standards-2024-2026-proposal

The new standards would increase fuel efficiency 8% annually for model years 2024-2026

Did you pay Fowler’s $5000 “mkt adj” price? What they quoted me....told em to forget it.
If you were written for 20% off MSRP and didn’t pay the mkt adj rip off, you indeed got a smokin deal.

It does seem like reports are slowing down. Hopefully it was just bad batch of parts. Would love to see reports of Toyota proactively contacting those owners rather than just waiting for the failure.

I did read someone who had the failed passenger turbo got it replaced without lifting the cab.

Not sure how it got rushed to market, mules got spotted in Jan 2019 and I’m sure they were working on it much earlier than that. Sweers and an American team were living in Japan and working at Toyota in early 2018, maybe earlier. Plus this engine and transmission were developed much earlier for release in the LS500. I think Toyota got unlucky again and started production at the worst possible time (COVID, the work reshuffle, inflation, supply chain, etc)

I honestly believe that the supply chain disruptions are the root problem here. It's not a black and white easy issue.
So much going on with so many parts.
    Raw materials maybe compromised
    Staffing, training and retention issues
Regional, disparate policies regarding pandemic response

Really would be a nightmare to manage production these days.

At the rate I drive my truck it will take over 15 years to hit 100k miles. I'll have to have a self driving car not long after that, so....

No market adjustment. It's why I'm in a Tundra instead of an F150. Jim Norton just would never deal in my experience. Of course, no one will in this environment on a new Tundra.

    Here is my question.

Has Toyota articulated how the replacement turbos it’s installing differ from the ones they’re pulling out?

Yes. It's a faulty electrical bit inside IIRC. Bad batch.

Maybe we need a thread simply listing members here who experience this defect?

Maybe date of purchase/in service, date of manufacture, and mileage on occurrence.

    Just a list, no discussion.

We could do the same for other issues that pop up.

Well the hopefully “good” that will come out of this will be Toyota getting their shit together, firing Mike Sweers, addressing issues with the Tundra, and dealers not being able to markup trucks or even hold MSRP due to ample bad press.

I’m not discounting the turbo issue, but if only there was a way to realize that “the leather looks like shit and had scratches all over the truck” before you bought it. o_O
