Looking at this thread makes me so nervous, I have a 11/21 build and so far no issues just the slight wind noise from the window seal. I have a bout 2032 miles on it. From the reports it seems like I probably would’ve experienced this already if I had a bad actuator.

I’d be curious to know the affected VIN #’s to date.... last 6? or?.....

yeah me too, I’m pretty sure Toyota has an idea of the batch and hopefully it’s a specific date and certain Vins. Either way this is a shitty situation for all those affected.

In any case the turbo issue has put me on the sidelines for now awaiting the resolution. Maybe by then I'll come to my senses and remember that I really don't need a full size truck. I mean I want one of these, but I really don't need it. If I can get past that lust I might be able to wait for the Tacoma update.

So, let's start a thread asking those with turbo issues to share their build date and last 6 or so digits of their VIN? I'd think it would be pretty easy to figure out when the problems started.

I'm trying! The thing is that even if they come out next year it may be like current Tundra situation where supply won't really be there for months or a year later still. My 2009 should make it that long, but you never know. At least the electronically controlled turbo issues should be ironed out by then... and I am assuming the Tacoma will have one.

Watching. Have just at 500 miles. Cold morning in single digits and high humidity. Tundra sitting last two days. This morning, noticed significant throttle lag under light acceleration. Sluggish and then bang, jump into hard acceleration. I am not a hard throttle driver so this is a new development.

Hoping its a result of sitting two days in cold and working through warm-up period.

    Mid December Production Date

Someone posted on FB a service sheet from their wastegate issue. It was free under warranty, this is the prices I found from online Toyota parts places.

    1. Gasket, Turbine 17279-0W040 - $6
    2. Turbo, Sub 17208-F4010- $2992
    3. Gasket, Exhaust manifold 17173-F4010- $14
    4. Gasket, Turbo Oil 15472-70010- $4
    5. Gasket 90430-12037- $2
    6. Gasket, turbo oil- 15471-F4010- $5

    Subtotal Only Parts- $3023.

Get that warranty y'all. Also according to this sheet they only replaced the passenger side turbo, this is only for one. Me personally, I'd ask to do both lol.

It's not the same exact motor, there was a mechanic that went over the variations between this and the Lexus engine. Basically cheaper components sprinkled around.

Does anybody know if the driver’s and passenger’s side turbos are the exact same part? IOW are they interchangeable? Have the same part #?

    Thanks

Was that the same thread where 3-4 people responded that it was only the passenger side that was replaced? If so I wonder why only that side? Different part number than the driver? More heat over there? Hmm

According to the parts list for the repair I posted about there isn’t. It just says turbo assembly no driver or passenger side indication.

Yeah, looking at that repair sheet online you are correct. Hopefully more people respond to that poll about which side was replaced.

I’m sure there’s two part numbers. I don’t think it could be the same, it has to mirror so the layout would be different I would assume.

I thought Mike Sweers said that everything on the truck is redone and brand new. They took the motor concept from the Lexus but redid everything to fit the tundra.

And they are expected to use a turbo 4 banger. Good luck with that.

Mike sweers.. he tends to drive things right into the ground(look at removing the trans cooler on the later model tundras... look at the turd gen tacoma)
Anything he touches turns to pure crap.

Typically, the driver's side is more likely to run hot. The brakes, steering column, steering gear and on many trucks, most of the front diff is all on the driver's side.

How do you all know it was cheapened from the Lexus engine? The turbo is probably cheaper because of the sales volume of the turbo (120k Tundras vs 3-5k LS). If anything it seems they took the LS motor and modified it to improve it like the intercooler, adding the mechanical fan, and retuning it for higher torque.

What is the basis for this? "cheaped out on a number of parts." Here say, speculation or direct knowledge on the engine build and differences?

All manufacturers at times will run into quality issues and bad batches. We all know Toyota built a reputation on TQM-Total Quality Management. Perhaps I would have a different opinion if it was my new Tundra and they failed to correct. That said, I did experience a major failure with my 17 4Runner TRD Pro with the brakes. All tried and proven components and built in Japan. Toyota made good on it. Took a few weeks as they were baffled as well on Root Causing the issue. I've also been through and negotiated a successful Lemon issue-buy back with another Auto manufacturer receiving a nice upgrade in the end. Details held due to NDA. In both cases and my experience, patience is a virtue when expecting positive outcomes vs. Ready Fire syndrome.

That Gen 3 Taco would’ve been far better off w their I4 turbocharged... than w the gutless zinger 3.5 they dropped in it that produces literally ALL of its power/“torque” at 4500 rpm.

You do know a turbocharger is artificial displacement? And the Ford Ranger with the turbo I4 has far more torque(like 310 ft/lb, which is what a truck needs)than the Tacoma.
Additionally, you can purchase flashes, bolt ons from Ford to bump that “4 banger” over 300hp.
Seen the turbo 4s GM is offering in there Silverado’s and Sierras??

He didn't design the 3rd Gen tacoma, he was chief engineer over Tacoma since 2012 but Kevin Hunter designed the 3rd Gen Tacoma.

He also has been the chief engineer over the Tundra since 2010...I guess all Tundra's after 2010 are pure crap?

Not defending him one way or another, but he has been the chief engineer on the Tundra since 2010...So I guess all Tundras after 2010 are crappy Mike Sweers engineered vehicles.

He as the Chief Engineer over Tacoma since 2012, but he did not design the Tacoma.
