I would. Like the one above, 88 miles and it’s already sitting broken for a month? they will tell you no way, if you don’t want it someone else to buy it for way more money. I’ve never heard of a manufacturer having issues right out of the gate with buyers. I mean some people are only had the truck for a day or 2 before the issues is starting. This is making the big three look good for once.

Well we ordered my wife’s at the beginning of December. By the vin it was the 7000 build on the Tundra. Our dealer didn’t have any info on what was being done to fix the issue and stated they were not sure if it was a failure on the turbo itself or a software issue. Just hoping at this point whenever we get it back we can get more than 88 miles till the next issue

Think this is common practice for Toyota replacing entire unit. My experience with total brake failure on a 17 4Runner was having them ship entire new unit directly from Japan and exchange

I’ll say this again too. They want to get to the root cause of the matter. They need to investigate all the “bad turbos” and find out what’s going on so this doesn’t happen in for ‘23 Tundras.

the good thing about this waste gate issue is it mostly seems to happen I n the first few hundred miles. I would much rather have a serious issue right away then 60,000 mile in. I just don’t understand why Toyota hasn’t put out something about it yet? And it’s not the only issue. There’s a number of issues. It seems like every truck has at least one issue. I seen production is being cut in half. Probably due to the serious quality control issues they are having.

    Agreed xc_tc.

Look people, Toyota has not gone from the company known for quality, durability & reliability (QDR) for 50+ years (in the US) to a company that's intent on tarnishing its reputation and blowing the huge investment made in developing and producing this new Tundra. They take things slow and methodical and make incremental changes to ensure QDR remains high. Just look at the Gen2's history: from MY to MY they didn't make drastic changes but rather added features slowly as they deemed "measured up" to their standards. So this is a whole new truck designed from the ground up and right now, you can bet they're highly focused on analyzing the faulty units 12-ways to sundown to figure out exactly what the problem/s is/are and their best course of action to remedy the situation. You KNOW they want this resolved ASAP because they're getting bad press all over the place and they certainly don't want the '22 Tundra to be the MY that they can never live down.

I wish we had data on exactly how many vehicles are affected out of present production, but I don't think we're going to find that out. Certainly those owners with issues are going to make it known - I would too - but how many don't have issues? I feel for those who have laid down huge sums of money and have waited weeks (or are still waiting) for a fix and to get their trucks back and to wonder: is it really going to be fixed or am I going to have a repeat? I honestly don't know how I'd respond to that. One thing has certainly come to light in all of this is how some dealers are stepping up and really taking care of their customers while others are failing. I hope this exposes the less-than-honorable dealers and that they lose business and that the good dealers gain more exposure, positive publicity, etc. I'd certainly go out of my way - even go out of state - to buy a vehicle from a rock solid dealer I could trust because of a reputation built on years of good customer service and honest dealings.

I've been waiting for over 10 years for a refreshed Tundra and I'm excited about getting one. However, I decided a few years back that I wouldn't buy the first MY of the Gen3 for two reasons: 1) I expected there would likely be some small problems to work out (never expected something as big as this) and 2) I didn't want to get caught up in the hype & rush of getting one as soon as it was released. Now with all the external headwinds at play (Covid, Supply Chain issues, etc.) it's likely pushed my delivery date even further back.

I hope it gets resolved soon for many reasons, but I know Toyota wants it resolved even more.

    EXACTLY CORRECT!
In the case of the airline industry, as shining examples....Herb Kelleher, one of the founders of Southwest Airlines and Bob Crandall-American Airlines, wouldn’t even get the nod to head their respective airlines today.
They’d be escorted off the property the first week with management styles.

That’s how absolutely FUBAR’d Corp America is today.

    100% BULLSEYE.
This Texan absolutely loved the NW, but hated the Seattle metro area.
Left my heart in the Pacific NW.

Damn shame what it’s turned into....

IMO the main problem is that corporations today emphasize quick profits and shareholder value over quality for customers and their workers' interests. IOW They have lost the necessary balance between those competing interests where everybody, to include customers, workers and shareholders, can win. Now it is just shareholders. Don't get me wrong, I am also a shareholder... but things are pretty messed up these days.

My dad spent his entire career in the aviation industry beginning in its infancy with National Airlines and Curtiss-Wright... then with the Navy. They had a slogan back then, "Zero Defects". These days it is more like "let's just pay the settlements for the defects" since that is usually the best for the bottom line.

Mukilteo. Remember the family day event at Boeing? I went to a few. You'd see successful, affluent Boeing employees walking around with their 26 y/o basement son who is wearing his jammies and can't be bothered to comb his hair.

My neighbor is retired Seattle PD, his late 30s son is living in a RV in front of his house. Our association isn't happy about that.

Anyways, all of the good people are retiring out of industry, and the few good young talents are being hoarded by different industries.

A few months prior to retirement I had to do some web based training that started with a fake British accent, a feminine male and a masculine female. I funked the test. Big time. I called another fellow manager and his solution was to give what he thought was the most wrong answer and he passed. So I followed his advice and score 82%. I knew I'd never miss working and still don't.

Looking at this thread makes me so nervous, I have a 11/21 build and so far no issues just the slight wind noise from the window seal. I have a bout 2032 miles on it. From the reports it seems like I probably would’ve experienced this already if I had a bad actuator.

yeah me too, I’m pretty sure Toyota has an idea of the batch and hopefully it’s a specific date and certain Vins. Either way this is a shitty situation for all those affected.

In any case the turbo issue has put me on the sidelines for now awaiting the resolution. Maybe by then I'll come to my senses and remember that I really don't need a full size truck. I mean I want one of these, but I really don't need it. If I can get past that lust I might be able to wait for the Tacoma update.

I'm trying! The thing is that even if they come out next year it may be like current Tundra situation where supply won't really be there for months or a year later still. My 2009 should make it that long, but you never know. At least the electronically controlled turbo issues should be ironed out by then... and I am assuming the Tacoma will have one.

Watching. Have just at 500 miles. Cold morning in single digits and high humidity. Tundra sitting last two days. This morning, noticed significant throttle lag under light acceleration. Sluggish and then bang, jump into hard acceleration. I am not a hard throttle driver so this is a new development.

Hoping its a result of sitting two days in cold and working through warm-up period.

    Mid December Production Date

Someone posted on FB a service sheet from their wastegate issue. It was free under warranty, this is the prices I found from online Toyota parts places.

    1. Gasket, Turbine 17279-0W040 - $6
    2. Turbo, Sub 17208-F4010- $2992
    3. Gasket, Exhaust manifold 17173-F4010- $14
    4. Gasket, Turbo Oil 15472-70010- $4
    5. Gasket 90430-12037- $2
    6. Gasket, turbo oil- 15471-F4010- $5

    Subtotal Only Parts- $3023.

Get that warranty y'all. Also according to this sheet they only replaced the passenger side turbo, this is only for one. Me personally, I'd ask to do both lol.

It's not the same exact motor, there was a mechanic that went over the variations between this and the Lexus engine. Basically cheaper components sprinkled around.

Was that the same thread where 3-4 people responded that it was only the passenger side that was replaced? If so I wonder why only that side? Different part number than the driver? More heat over there? Hmm

According to the parts list for the repair I posted about there isn’t. It just says turbo assembly no driver or passenger side indication.

I think it’s the same part # but maybe only the passenger side failed?
