Glad you got your truck fixed. Did they say why they didn't replace the actuator? Did they replace both turbos for $5500? Any word what the issue was and how the new turbos are different or fixed?

This must just be a problem specific to the Tundra and not the Japanese made 3.44 tt in the Lexus LX, LS or LC300. Haven't heard of any issues with them.
I believe the Car Care Nut on YouTube said the turbos in the Tundra were different.

I will never buy a first year of new vehicle! Need to let them work the kinks out, just saying!

I’m sure that is probably standard. Just glad these guys don’t work on airplanes.

Have you not been around a lot of airplane mechanics? Never heard of CND a write up?

A fair bit. They tend to take sensor lights a little more seriously before giving it the shrug. Low bus voltage almost put me in the ground.

Back to the truck, not saying the sensors never ever give a bad signal, but usually they throw a code for a legitimate reason. If the service manager is telling techs the SOP for an initial “repair” is to simply clear code and send customer on their way, that leaves much to be desired in my book.

So did they go in through the wheel well? If you get a chance ask them, please.

Sitting in a dealer right now looking at a 22 Tundra with 11 miles on it being sold as a used vehicle. WTH? There's a 22 in line for service behind my 21. I wish I would have seen it come in to speak with the owner.

Would love to see if you can find out the back story on why an already pre-owned '22 for sale as well as why the other '22 is in line for service.
    Thanks!

It's a new tactic to get around selling it at MSRP. They call it "used". Then price it however they want.

    Beware...

Whoa!!! If that is true, this is horrible. Doesn't the vehicle have to be titled and tied to a specific VIN to then be re-sold again as pre-owned?
Man, that would be the lowest of lows for car sales gimmicks & tricks.

They didn't say why they didn't just change the actuator in this case, but when I initially brought it in thinking it was a sensor issue I was told they usually just swap out the whole parts with a new one because it's quicker and easier. Then toyota fixes the sensor or in this case other failing component and uses it elsewhere. My service report doesn't have all the prices listed, so I don't know how much is the part and the full labor or what; I only got a glimpse of the other one with the final cost to toyota. The repair was specifically the replacement of bank 1 turbo and actuator assembly listed on the report, and was confirmed waste gate actuator failure, which the internet did hone in on. No real word on what the detailed issue is other than actuator failure. I also don' t know exactly how it's been remedied or if the other turbo will be effected or not. It sounds like toyota knows what it is and is fixing it on affected trucks that haven't been shipped yet, so I feel decent about whatever they sent me.

@raylo I'll see if I can get info on this. the full labor is listed at 12 hours (remember this was in the dealership 28 days and got re-detailed etc. so who knows what that all went to), but I was told the replacement was relatively quick and easy and everything was accessible "underneath".

Bank 1 is the driver's side. And it sounds like they only replaced 1 turbo, and job cost would've been $5500.....

    Sound right?

With a 2/8 build date, this is a sentence, @SmokedMosquito, I've been waiting to read for a long time.
Hope you are spot-on accurate with that hypothesis!!

I know some will register & plate it to the dealership ( sometimes as a test pilot/ demonstrator) which means it has been registered etc so it is used. I’ve know one dealer in Ontario that has one plated with personalized plates for the dealership - not dealer test drive plates -

Yea I'm not sure if it's consistently bank 1 for everyone or what, but it does sound like just the one was replaced. Remember the 5500 includes all the labor for the full time it was there too, which may have been for other things. I don't know what the part cost. I assume it's not cheap anyway.

Until they have another bad run on something in year three. Shit happens either way.
I really wonder if this issue could or would have happened simply in spite of debut timing.

Been going on for 20 years that I know of.
Toyota gave me more for my year-old 2000 tundra AC 4WD than I paid for it new simply for this reason.

Here's what I was told on the used 22 with 11 miles. Said the salesman: There was such a large demand for the 22 Tundra, Toyota put them out for auction to get higher prices and all we wanted to do was put our customers in a new Toyota. :monocle:

I wanted so bad to ask him if they had and swampland for sale in Florida but smiled and said, How nice of you.

    Gimme a break.

Never did find the owner of the 22 in for service.

If they’re not careful (and with used cars up 37%) folks will get right back in line to sell their 22’s…hold the cash and wait a bit for the market to get more saturated (and more choices abound) :notsure:

That's not going to happen. Things are likely to get even worse in the next 12 months.

I can think of 2 major geopolitical issues about to go kinetic, and the pandemic issues have only become worse.

And one of those geopolitical issues involves 2 countries that make the majority of our tech and a region where Toyota's headquarters are.

Exactly. And in addition to the geopolitical aspects there is a very good chance that the high number of voluntary Covid hosts here, and involuntary hosts in poor countries, pretty much guarantees that some nasty new variants will be spawned and extend the pain... maybe even making what we have now the new normal. As much as I wish this was all over... and I am not just talking about car prices and availability... I believe we have a looong way to go. <sigh>

On a related note the shortage of new vehicles and high prices for used ones seems to have increased car thefts and even carjackings. Keep your eyes open out there.

Well, you should hope you don’t get a cam tower leak then because they will be ripping your engine apart in that 21 if you do.

From all I have read, they are swapping the entire turbo assembly. That includes the wastegate sensor and actuator.

Lots of folks sayin "No, no don't worry the turbo's are perfectly fine, it's only the wastegate actuator or its just the wastegate sensor, don't conflate those issues!"

Well that might be technically correct, but in real world it's definitely all one assembly and apparently not one Toyota has faith in field repairing.

Saying "don't worry the turbo, the turbo itself is fine" seem analogous to a service manager telling the customer "This ECU is perfectly fine, we've just got a bad Bus Transceiver."

Then he comes back "Oh wait, apparently we don't have a clean room to open that up and techs trained on on soldering solid state electronics so I'm afraid I'm going to have to replace the entire ECU, but sir, again don't worry it's not a problem with the ECU itself"

C596981F-E3DA-4C56-B73A-1A54FE134E80.jpg Can’t believe everything you read on the internet, but I read of a truck being replaced due to lemon law. Read of another that the truck has been in the shop since 1/4 and eta on parts is 2/10. That guy is waiting on corporate to see how to proceed. Just a bummer situation all around.

It’s easier for Toyota to swap the entire turbo assembly to diagnose the real issue. The parts cannon isn’t going to help anyone so just replacing the faulty actuator may not solve the problem. The wastegate actuator can absolutely be removed from the turbo assembly but those parts may mot even be available yet as a standalone part. There will likely be more diag procedures in the future for this issue.

I wonder how much of this is the dealership looking up the parts in their system and seeing 30+ day lead time. Any and every dealership should be calling the regional service engineers and getting parts pulled from the turbo supplier or the engine factory.

The supply chain crisis (should really be called a supply chain emergency) is affecting everything.

Agree with all of the above, except that if I was a betting man, Toyota knows exactly what the problem is at this point. Just the folks saying a bricked turbo is still a good turbo are not seeing the totality of the situation at this juncture.
