$3700 sounds ridiculous, I'd shop around for a Platinum warranty at a better price.

If the sensor can be reset, or the control software can be updated eliminating the problem I don’t have an issue with it.

If that is a Toyota warranty maybe that is an indication of how confident Toyota is in the new truck.

This isn't the turbo issue? Such a shame, I really do like these trucks but I think they will need 3-4 years to get a good idea of the issues it will have. Looking at the gold warranty it doesn't mention turbo but every other major component. The 7 year/200,000 km platinum warranty is $4700 - $5400 after tax. That's 10% of the value of the vehicle.

Or more likely a reflection of how much money the dealership wants to bilk you out of.

I would be quite curious to see how much they’re marking that up for sure.

There is a bit of a $$ sweet spot if you can call it that, around 6-7 yrs & 160k (km). Once you go too far beyond that it seems it’s exponentially more $$.

Are those figures in US Dollars or Canadian Dollars?

Either way my question to the dealer finance office guy or gal would be pointed and unpleasant.

1.) Is the truck a pile of crap? Toyota knows this truck is going to be a maintenance nightmare past warranty and want 10% of vehicle value to warrant it past the normal warranty. Which tells anyone with a functional brain to run away and not buy it…. Or…..

2.) Is the dealership trying to skull fuck you on the price of an extended warranty on top of charging you MSRP and who knows what else? This tells me and anyone else with an IQ above room temperature that we shouldn’t do business with them.

Time to stand up and walk out either way.

    Oh yeah, I know.

I was an ASE tech in a "different era". Back when dealers were still family owned, lawyers weren't too pesky, and we'd ask a customer if they could leave the car with us and have a tech drive it home.
We never just cleared a CEL on a new vehicle without offering a choice to the customer.

    But, that was then.....

The current procedure I’ve been hearing is to clear it and if the same code returns, the turbo will get replaced. Some people have wastegate stuck open code and some have wastegate stuck closed code but it seems like a one time error that triggers the CEL.

    • I have read that members on this web site are paying $1,500 for Toyota's Platinum, bumper to bumper warranties'. Good for 10yrs and 100,000 miles.
    • Toyota extended warranty come in three Classes, some are cheaper then others. Thats why some members pay less.
    • The three classes are:
      • Powertrain Protection—Cover the cost of repairs for your Toyota’s engine, transmission, and drive axle.
      • Gold Protection—Get middle-of-the-road coverage that extends beyond the powertrain but doesn’t cost as much as bumper-to-bumper coverage.
      • Platinum Protection—This is the highest level of coverage offered by Toyota.

    • Thank About it.

If you like to do your own maintenance work, I'm assuming you would need to save records and receipts of oil changes for Toyota to honor the 10yr platinum warranty? What about receipts for coolant, brake fluid, trans fluid, gear fluids, serpentine belts, air filters, batteries, tires, brake pads, ect?

Seems like a lot of work if that is the case. I might just put 1.5k in the stock market and use that account for turbo issues/work outside of the 3 year warranty period.

Always a good idea, even if just for resale value.

Look around the internet for a service template, like what a repair shop would print out after working on your car.

That's how I record the services I perform on my own vehicles. Part numbers, quantities, pricing, etc. Looks pro and most are impressed by being thorough.

God I hope that is not the SOP.

There are some terrible techs out there though.

Reminds me of my buddy, bought a new F-250 V-10, All is good until he took it in for the first major service. Post service CEL comes on and they tell him “no worries, we cleared it, it's good to go.” Next day engine had some catastrophic failure. To their credit Ford corporate paid for a brand motor. A week later he picks it up and takes off down the Interstate and makes it about 5 miles down the highway when just about every light on the dash comes on including the temp gauge pegged and then engine just quits. He coasts onto the shoulder. It’s a hot day so hops out and calls the dealership back. They again tell him “no worries just bring it back and we will look at the codes.” He starts arguing with them that they need to bring him a tow truck as he thinks something is seriously wrong. The tech insists it's fine to drive it back he just need to try and get it started again. My buddy's been going at it on the phone with the tech 5 or 10 minutes on a loud interstate shoulder with his back to the truck. He turns around and smoke is just pouring out from under the hood, shortly followed by flames and he then he watches his less than 1 year old truck burn to the ground beside the interstate. Dealership finally comes and gets him and he swore he could hear the yelling in the service bay from sales floor:
"How many #$T# times I gotta tell you Ronnie, you gotta #$%#$ remember to put the oil in!"

It’s not really a big deal, the software does a good job of detecting the issue and protecting the engine. Plus, it’s unlikely the engine will blow up. I believe the dealer techs are doing test drives and there’s a Techstream test to check the wastegate. If the code returned immediately, that would mean there’s really a problem with the actuator. I prefer this approach since it means less down time for my vehicle.
I’ve seen some comments on the FB group that the code never returned.

Has anyone looked into the possibility that most of the trucks with issues have the TRD upgrade? Just seems like a trend. But, I could be wrong.

updates for people wondering about a real user with the turbo issue (see my posts in this thread). I got my beloved truck back today after the turbo replacement. As far as I know the turbos are still mostly on backorder, but my service manager made a bunch of calls to people at toyota to get one in for me a few days ago since my truck had been there for a while already. 28 days was the total time; yes, that's a long time. I had started talking buyback and lemon law with the dealership (although I'm not sure any of that helped or not), but I decided my best option was wait and see since going get a new truck and dealing with lawyers wasn't really going to work with my schedule.

A couple interesting bits to address questions i've seen here and on fb.
    1. the price toyota paid for the turbo replacement service was roughly $5500.
    2. I did have a loaner the whole time. Not a truck because they just didn't have any. I was lucky enough to not need my truck for work, although I was saying I'd need a truck soon, and they were planning on helping me out some kind of way that we didn't get to.
    3. I asked in passing how they accessed the turbo and if they had to remove the cab like the picture floating around. the tech laughed and said no, so myth busted there. he said the replacement itself only took a little over an hour or so.
    4. A lot of people are saying the dealerships/techs don't know about this and while that may be true for some my service manager had gotten lots of scoop on it from toyota, and someone was sent down to advise on the issue/replacement. Reading all the speculations and bs on here and facebook made me anxious but talking to him with real information was a relief.

fingers crossed the ordeal is over for me. the drive home was sweet.

Love to hear it. 22 Tundra owners just need to look at their trucks carefully to see how accessible the turbos are.
