I never said that stuff wouldn’t bother me. Really not sure what any of this has to do with what I wrote. At all.

I'm no wrench, or gear-head, but I can tell you from personal experience having owned two Porsches that pulling the cab off for engine work is common practice. And it has been for years.
The vehicles are designed and engineered that way. The photos may seem frightening but I'm not nervous about it one bit. My $0.02

You came across as they know what their doing and they have a manual to go by and its no big deal, and that the youtube guys were idiots for complaining that his brand new truck was being taken apart by someone who probably has no experience with this new truck. Thats the way it sounded anyway. I may have misunderstood.

The YouTube guys are idiots for making drama about torque specs all all that shit. And yes, they hopefully do have a manual to go by. Do you really think they are going to just get on YouTube and pull stuff out of their ass the first time they do the turbo procedure?

Yes, the turbo is an issue. I said that first post. No I wouldn’t be thrilled if that was my new truck. Yes, the YouTube pontificators are morons.

It's just like TV these days where "reality" shows that dispense boatloads of fake drama seem to be the most popular. A real tech analysis would be seen as "boring".

It's hard to imagine any scenario whereby removing the cab of your "new" 2022 Tundra for a wastegate issue is "okay".

Failing this soon without knowing why raises the likelihood of other wastegate failures later on. Then there is the issue of removing the cab and disrupting A/C, brake, cooling, and wiring systems. Letting the local dealer do an oil change is one thing, but this is something quite different.

Then there's the question of what this repair will cost...out of warranty? That could be the kiss of death for the noted long term relationship many owners and their Tundras have had.

I got the 8 year/125,000 platinum warranty with $0 deductible for about half of what he paid for his 7/75 warranty.

Is it a failure? We don’t even know yet. It could just be a manufacturing defect.

Exactly, we still know very little. But I've got to say it feels better to just be a prospective Tundra buyer now rather than an owner. I believe Toyota will figure this out and make it right. But no way I'd want to go through that personally.

I suspect it's a minor manufacturing defect in a single batch that is impeding on the tolerances necessary for the software to activate the wastegate when appropriate. They've had to do a cab off in order to access the wastegate to check the tolerances and see if anything can be done to the actual component so the software can operate it properly. But I literally have no idea and am talking directly out of my ass.

I'm with you, I had a bad experience getting my cam tower resealed. Plus techs dislike warranty work because the manufacturer screws them on it. That then increases the odds a tech would rush through it and make a mistake or not take as much care. Not blaming the techs, that's on the manufacturer. They should not be putting them in that predicament.

There are two ways you can get to the turbo in a 2022 tundra, remove the engine, or take the cab off. Cab off is probably quicker, those that work on their own trucks when they get older and fail, will more than likely have to go the pull the engine route.

If this just a defect caused my mishandling or assembly error, then it’s a “time bomb” like most make it out to be. The wastegate actuator isn’t failing and it won’t cause catastrophic damage.

BY THE WAY, I took a look at my truck to see where the wastegate actuator is located. It’s just behind the upper control arm rear bushing. Easiest to see it from the passenger side. The wastegate actuator is bolted on to the turbo with 10 mm bolts. So let’s say that the wastegate actuators ARE failing in the field, its really easy to replace without removing the cab.

That’s for sure, but I don’t feel any anxiety. Toyota tends to be pretty good about fixing potentially catastrophic issues like this.

I had tentatively planned to order a Tundra as my Tacoma lease runs out this spring; no longer. Will roll just continue to roll with the Tacoma until there are some longer-term reviews of this truck and the turbos in particular.

No doubt taking the cab off opens the door to a lot of problems if done by someone who doesn’t take pride in their work. I found out after purchasing my 40k mile 2017 tundra and experiencing some electrical issues that the cab was removed to fix the cam tower seals. This is not common practice for that repair, most techs don’t remove the cab for that job. My mechanic said he wouldn’t have. Turns out the repairing dealership didn’t drain the lines properly going to the heater core in the dash before removing them. This caused corrosive coolant to drip down into the passenger side kick panel electrical compartment and corrode a bunch of connectors and relays. The truck was starting totally on its own when if I put it in neutral, and stalling shifting from reverse to drive. Check engine lights and codes of course. The dealer I purchased it used from fixed it in the end after a couple visits but I was ready to try and get rid of it. It’s been fine since luckily, point is it opens the door to problems you would have never had.

I think what a lot of people fail to (or refuse to) realize is that those good old days of Tundra simplicity are gone. I think that we can all agree on.

This new truck has the complexity of all the others now, so to hang your hat on dependability due to an older model without having time to actually see if that holds true is a little overzealous in my personal opinion.

I'm not suggesting that they're not as dependable, but the engineer in me thinks that could very well be possible. But it's anyone's guess and only time will tell.

Honestly, the people who are doom and gloom saying that the 3rd Gen will be a total failure and the fanboys who say "it's a Toyota, it can never fail" are equally as laughable in my opinion.

Less than 30 07's early on were affected with the crankshaft issue out of over 100,000 built that year. The usually reliable crankshaft supplier notified Toyota the there was a bad batch that didn't meet metallurgical specs. No engines blew up. No crankshafts snapped. Once Toyota was notified it was easy to determine which Tundra's had the faulty shafts. Some engines were swapped out and a few simply got a new Tundra. There was a noisy pulley issue recall. My 07 had it replaced. Later years developed the quite serious AIP snafu. At 12 years old I had to replace a power steering pressure sensor. $20. Not bad. Hopefully this wastegate issue will be similar. Should be easy to determine which Tundra's got the faulty wastegate actuator/harness assemblies. "Should be"...........not off to a great start though. Supply chain issues are not helping either.

I would offer this view as well: Internet news, Electronic Media, and forums like this equate to rapid communication. The messaging rolls exponentially. Another point, belong to the 4Runner group, Mustang Roush Group and new here. The structure and messaging remain the same. General Information, Chat, New Releases, Classified and PROBLEM's. For some, they roll with the issue and work through it communicating on the forum in matter of fact message. Others "The Sky Is Falling". My 2 Cents and opinion. :)

Nothing NORMAL about removing the cab of a BRAND NEW truck in any WAY, SHAPE or FORM.
So happy i decided to go with a 2021 TUNDRA instead of having to go with this MAJOR HEADACHE !!!

Not even to trouble shoot a component that is only easily accessible by doing so? Seems unnecessarily restrictive to me. But I'm no engineer.
