In my opinion, it's the particular demographic of people who mostly flock to those types of jobs, at least around here.

Same reason I have no interest in taking an Uber or taxi.

Whoever lived in our house before must have had a small business that shipped stuff out with Canada Post or something like that. They never did forward her mail correctly so she still gets a bunch of notices from CP delivered to our house.

Not to be picky but it is called Surepost.
UPS is currently trying to distance itself from Amazon, even though Amazon is its biggest customer.

Funny UPS usually delivers our Surepost packages to the house instead of the post office.
I'm guessing it's because I know the driver and give him Gatorade whenever I'm home for a delivery..

Same with the Amazon semi drivers, 99.9% of them are contractors.
You'll rarely see an Amazon tractor pulling an Amazon trailer, but they do have a few local day cabs.



The majority are third-world contract drivers.

I hate that it's even a thing. I don't think professional drivers should be allowed to run if they've not proven that they have assimilated to American (or whatever nation they move to) driving culture. Not to be a dick, but I've seen so many Indian drivers doing douchebag stuff because they are driving like they are still in India that it makes me really close to being an isolationist.

I have my CDL. I know how the job works. There is ZERO excuse for the asshat driving I see from imported drivers.

 

A) I wish this was enforced. One of the requirements is the ability to speak and write English well enough to communicate. Worked a fuel desk at a truck stop when I was young. Tons of the drivers couldn't put two words of English together if their life depended on it.

B) I think every CDL driver should have a mandatory amount of time with a trainer in the seat next to them when making real world trips, not just at a school. I did and it made me a much better driver to have a guy who knew the truck inside and out right there guiding me for tons of trips before I was running solo.

C) This I prickle at to an extent because of the pay structure for many drivers. Being paid mileage you can't afford to sit for an hour or two in your drive window for an inspection. That loss of mileage comes directly out of the driver's pocket. I think those kinds of inspections and weigh ins need to happen, but we need a way for it to not rob the driver. Hard enough to make money as a driver if you aren't cheating a log.

D) YES! This should be mandatory for driver jobs and all welfare/assistance programs.

 

A) Has always been law, it's just not enforced.
