I had no idea what it was or that I even had anything like that until I saw a documentary about it. That's when I realized that the flashes of bright light I would experience when being startled by loud noises was my brain getting my senses mixed up.

The most common way for me to experience it is close my eyes and hear a startling loud bang. I will have a flash of bright light cross my vision. Like a flash of golden lightning.

I don't experience any other aspects of it such as tasting color or whatnot, at least as best as I can tell. I think more people may experience parts of it but just don't know it because its how you have been perceiving the world your entire life. I guess it also depends on how pervasive or severe it is.

I have heard that folks who take psychedelics or LSD experience synesthesia during their drug induced trip.

Also for the record, I have never done drugs and I haven't had booze in years, so it's not from having done any sort of drugs in the past.

Wait what?! No inner monologue? Not being a smartass, can you describe to me how you think about things? For example, if you think about what you want to do on your day off, do you not kind of talk it out in your head? Like maybe I want to get Chinese, nah we'll go to a local dive bar instead? That kind of monologue?

I had to look it up. I'm honestly not sure.

I had heard of the inability to see things when thinking about them, and i assumed I was able to because if I think about say, a red Ferrari, I know what it looks like.

    Then I read this description.

    upload_2025-8-27_17-54-1.jpg

The first and last ones makes me question, because me "seeing" it in my mind is the same whether eyes are open or closed. I don't feel like I'm "seeing" it with my eyes.

However, I can picture stuff without closing my eyes as well. Like imagining a truck with different wheels and then thinking of it with different wheels or colors of paint... I can do that, but not if I try to drill down and have details.

Idk if tgat makes any sense.

Definitely varying degrees. I don't know why it's so interesting to me. I also learned about it from some documentary.

Never heard of or thought of substance use being a factor.

In that chart I am a five. I closed my eyes and held my hand over my eyelids and focused as hard as I possibly could and all I can do is think about how I can't see the damn apple

It's super hard to explain it to someone who has one. I guess a better way to describe it is I don't have an over active inner monologue. Meaning, I can shut it off when I want and literally can sit and stare for hours and think about absolutely nothing. It can freak people out if they don't know whats going on. I've been told I literally look lifeless at times. You want to find true inner peace, learn how to turn off your inner monologue. The crazy thing is I am very decisive and have really good judgement. So subconsciously I do have some sort of inner monologue, I'm just rarely aware of it.

Isn't it interesting how we are all people, but can be wired just a bit different?

Ahhh. Mine is like a rabid squirrel on speed. Literally always going unless I am keeping myself preoccupied with something and even then if it's not something that requires lots of concentration my monologues going nuts lol

It sure is. My dad is like a MacGyver of sorts, he'll fix something with whatever's on hand, and he said he's able to do that because he can picture the thing he is working on and rotated around and look at it all in his head. I can't even pretend to do that. I think that's why I struggle so badly with written instructions and do so much better with YouTube videos.

This is exactly how my wife is.
A fairly common thing that happens is we'll be driving along totally quiet for awhile and out of nowhere she'll loudly proclaim something. Scares the living shit out of me almost every time. And when she does it, it makes zero sense to me because she's had so much inner conversation. Then she'll get annoyed when I don't realize what she is even talking about. A lot of the time it will be a continuation of a conversation we had days or even weeks before.

Well, it's good that you can see things when you dream at least. :) I really enjoy my dreams, which have become increasingly crazy since I began taking my nighttime gummies. :jellydance:

Umm, similar. I will sometimes bounce rapidly from one topic to another without a transition so it won't make sense. Also been known to have a topic spring to mind randomly that is tied to a memory but it's a very obscure link.
My dreams are always dumb. Either bad or confusing

I don't really dream when I sleep, or I don't remember them. Maybe once every year or two I remember a little something but that's it.

Yeah, being an engineer emeritus, that wouldn't work for me.
I've never heard of it, but I must have the hyper version. I can't even use a hands free phone while driving, the conversation is entirely visual to me. Especially technical work conversations.

I do have inner monologue though. Especially when group speaking. I don't make written notes but I do rehearse in my head.
