    Also true, but I'm not an employer so I can't control that side of it. I can only control my actions as an employee, and the reflection what my employer does, minus my own character not allowing me to actively screw them over.

    I definitely have considered trades but I'm not certain I have the body for them. A lot of family members and friends of family members seem pretty damn worn out when they are getting near retirement. As far as competitors paying more, there are several but it would add a commute and make the working conditions significantly worse.

    It's definitely physical work but any decent employer is on board with working smarter these days.
    It's cheaper than having someone home on L&I.

    You overestimate how many employers are decent. They'll push for you to get it done fast, safety be damned, and then blame you for not being safe when you get hurt.

    Then they use that as an excuse to justify reprimand and poor reviews.

    On to the next one until you find the one that realizes they make more profit with a happier employees.

    There will always be shitty and cheap companies out there. Our goal as employees should be only to hear about those shitty situations, not live them :D

    Not trying to be an insensitive dick, personally I would just do anything possible to find the best employer for me. (Move out of state, get additional training/school)

    My goal as a 19 y/o electrical apprentice was to work for the place I'm at now. I'm 43 now, been there 10 years :D

    Ok, so to illustrate, you can pick which one and it's only what is defined. You can't change it

    Which option would you rather have:
    1. You are well off, want for nothing financially, enjoy excess funds for fun and frivilous things, and have no financial worries. However, you're alone. You don't have a relationship on a truly meaningful level and you never know if you're just being used.
    2. You are "broke" by what fools today think is poor. Your needs are met; food, clothing, and a roof over your head, but you don't have a lot to spare. You are getting by. You do have a deep and meaningful relationship with your spouse and are raising a family with your humble income.

    Tell us, who of those two really has everything?

    I'm not too worried about what salary I earn or what type of retirement I get. I plan to fund my future by winning the lottery.

    Pretty solid plan I think. I learned it when I attended the @LarryDangerfield school of financial planning.

    They pushed mgmt and non-union peeps to a 401k over a decade ago. The company forced an end to the Machinist’s pension when they had leverage and my union followed soon after (they are sissies). I have credit for “years served”, but not accruing any more time.

    Honestly, a 401k is a better program for both employers and employees. I can cash out my pension when I retire and will do that with a quickness.

    My 401k match is amazing. They incentivized us to drop the pension. It was 5-6% the first few years (on top of the existing match). Final year now and down to 2%. We will see what we get next year in the new contract.

    I am hoping we hold out for the retiree healthcare to be restored…
