<squints> I kind of agree on this. Can't solve the postal service problem, but it has great merit as an argument for keeping paper. If you knew what happens to your check after you tender it to a business (or government), though, you'd understand that it's actually digital currency as much as a credit card. But coins and paper money... All in.

I'm very disappointed the government has decided to stick its filthy fingers into bitcoin. It held promise as a means to take interpersonal transactions out of the government's purview. But here we are.

 

I am very aware. The difference is that if some shitbag steals my phone, they aren't getting my bank account.

The whole reason I have a credit card is because it is a buffer against risk. For example, my credit card was skimmed and a purchase of over $2500 was made on it. I told the CC company "that was not me and is not an authorized charge." Immediately they took the charge off my account, canceled the card, and sent out a new one.

Now, imagine that exact same scenario if it had been my debit card, or directly linked to my actual money in my account. I'd be out that money for the entirety of the time it took to prove it out, and even then there's no promise that I wouldn't be screwed.

I cannot completely sever my banking from being digital because of how banks and businesses operate, but I can minimize the risk I take with my own actions.

 

But checks are forged all the time. And the effect on personal finances is the same as with a debit card. Of course you can lose $250 cash too, by being horribly stupid .

My argument isn't convenience versus risk, though. Mine is that the government can stay the fv(k out of my business. Cash is helpful that way.
