And you can't have goat ropers without a goat rodeo.

What it really comes down to is... do the numbers work??? If they do, then don't wait; especially if you're are going to be drawig a pension (can't remember if you said you were on a pension, 401k, etc...) Once you are formally collecting a pension, it's much more difficult for them to unwind or renig on it... However, A LOT can happen that may affect your pension and ability to collect as originally intended preemptive of you pulling the plug. I believe you are union based, etc. so the odds of that happening (someone pulling the rug out from under you) is pretty nill, but things are freakin' strange these days and you just never know...

As someone else said, retiring isn't necessarily the end of work; it's simply the end of a chapter and an opportunity to turn the page...

Buyouts are great, just make sure you read the fine print and make sure you're not giving up anything. For us, guys that took a buyout signed away their rights to retiree healthcare (this was a huge exchange). However, the longevity of retiree healthcare for us wasn't absolute; in other words it could be cancelled if it became non-sustainable (which based on an actuary's assessment about 2 years ago), it had already become. So, we were notified that the coverage was being limited to a certain number of years.... If any of the language in the settlement "buyout" is questionable or not clearly articulated, run it by an attorney before you sign.

Normally, the buyouts aren't engineered to 'screw' the empolyee, as the employer benefits from getting rid of high $$$ senior employees and replacing them w/lower pay rate and reduced benefited newer employees that aren't grandfathered into older contracts...

Also, have a plan... Take 6 months or so and enjoy the free time, get a few projects done, but begin working on that next chapter. Put something together that gives you structured purpose w/o the absolute obligation of a 40-50 hour work week.

I'm sure you grew up in an era when the 'buzz' was to develop a lifestyle that provided you with financial freedom (you aren't trading time for money). Residual income is another term and similar concept to this. In other words, you've created a situation where either your money continually makes you money or where you receive money for work you've previously done and are now being compensated without putting in additional labor (in other words you are no longer trading time for money).... This was the basis of Amway, pyramid schemes, lucrative investments (for those that had the capital), etc. from back in the day (our days).

Well, entering 'retirement' (particulary under a pension) gives you just that... For me, I've never been nor will I ever be 'rich'. But, we are comfortable and are able to do so without lifting a finger, I wake up making a six figure income; each year; every year; for the remainder of my life. Also, the way we structured our 'options at retirement', if I die preemptive of my wife, she'll continue to collect my FULL pension for the remainder of her life. I lose about 8-9% a year of income for taking this option, but it protects my wife in the event of my death as the 'normal' option and 'full' benefit would result in her receiving only 50% of my pension for the remainder of her life. Make sure you review options that are available to you.

Another thing you should do if you are sitting on a pension is take a serious look at the 'fund' that pays out your pension and be informed on how it's managed and the fund's prospectus.

Here's the fund that pays me... it's public record and easy to find. This is our annual financial statement. It shows the fund's assets, liabilities and actuary based positions in the future. It also shows where/how the money is invested. The fund currently has over $64 billion in assets restricted for pension benefits. We are in a pretty good position considering all of the recent ups and downs of the economy. So, I'm confident that my pension will not be disrupted. Check for something like this through your own system. It helps w/peace of mind and stay somewhat involved with monitoring what's happening w/it throughout your retirement.

    https://www.nvpers.org/sites/default/files/2025-04/!PAFR FY 2024 FINAL (2).pdf

So, again, if the numbers work for you and everything lines up... jump on it.

You'll also want to explore tax implications of your timing. So, if your buy out happens at the end of the year, you've been collecting income as usual through the entire year, plus now a lump sum gets thrown in their... you're gonna have a higer tax burden next year unless you can find a way to route some of those funds to a pre-tax account such as a 457... If you do have a 457 (deferred comp), don't forget you can take advantage of 'catch up' rules if your contributions haven't been maxed out for the entire duration of your employment. I'm pretty sure they've (the laws) have changed since my retirement, but back then you could 'declare' your final 3 years (pre-retirement) and double the allowable contribution to your 457. So, instead of $19,500/per year or whatever it was back then, we were able to contribute $39,000 per year into the 457 (pre-tax). Based on that I decided to retire in January, so my final check (which contained payout of all my extra sick, vacation, and for those that took buyouts any other lump payments) I dedcuted almost a full $40k off the top of that final check; which signifcantly reduced my tax burden the next year.

Again, just stuff to consider and factor into your timing and decisions about when to pull the trigger.

Don't hesitate needlessly, but also take advantage of every opportunity you have to maximize how much of the buyout, income, pension, etc.. stays in your pocket (especially for that final year of employment).

That might be part of the confusion. Tundra's don't have a 3.5 in them. The 3rd gen Tacoma had a 3.5 NA V6, but the 3rd gen Tundra is a 3.4 TTV6.
