Oh gosh, the Texas flooding. :(

Camp Mystic is on the forefront of my mind. It seems like they are going to get sued, lose or settle, and then will have to shut down entirely, is my prediction. I wonder if the State and local decision makers will also get sued and lose. Owning a property that is a business, planning, being on top of issues and property design is serious. The occupancy on this site should never have been allowed in the form that they chose. If the State and local municipalities do this :notsure: then there should be a special place in hell for them.

A camp like this is essentially a hotel or short term rental from an occupancy perspective, and the idea that they would stack bunk beds in there, and with that level of density, in a high risk flood zone, makes me apoplectic.

If I was an attorney it would be scorched earth. If they were ever allowed to operate under a new ownership, assuming that some of the land is safe, a large portion of this site would be a memorial, and they would also make sure there are institutional changes in the way uses are reviewed and approved. Regulation? Hell yes I like it.

Timeline shows when emergency alerts warned of Texas flood disaster - CBS News
NWS issued flood warnings starting at least one day ahead of time. State and local governments didn't issue any warnings.

I think the entire world has gotten soft and irresponsible; but regardless of blame, that camp needs to close.

Catastrophies, severe loss of life, damage, etc. are rarely the result of a singular event, person, or entity. Many catestophic events could have not happened at several points along the way...

I'm not there, haven't been there, and arm chair quarterbacking is easy, but sounds like a LOT of decisions or lack thereof resulted in needless loss of life...

Moral of the story, if you, your family, or friends are entering a place place or situation and something about it doesn't look right, feel right, or makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up... trust your instincts, be the one to say something, and take immediate action!!! Simply put, do something other than shrug it off. Change your plans, change your course of action, etc...

I agree with you on both points. I’m sure we have all seen this first hand.

My normal code of conduct here is to try to keep things upbeat, brief and hopefully fun. But I will set that aside for a moment.

News organizations are saying that the camp is “found to be” in a flood zone. They also scrutinize warnings, weather services and all of that. This camp has always been at high risk and the mapping isn’t anything new.

What I see is that they had existing buildings that have been in a high risk portion of the floodplain for many, many decades. What happens in these cases is that the approved use/occupancy and buildings are grandfathered in. However, they would typically not be allowed to make ANY changes or increase the intensity of the use. That said, the likelihood that over time physical improvements and occupancy changes happened without approval, and that there were issues with the local agencies’ scrutiny of what was allowed and how that evolved, is highly likely.

The things that are really the main problems that I’ve observed from having to work with a lot of people over the years — some making decisions, some affected by them and others in appointed or elected positions, as well as employees: lack of empathy; lack of integrity/reasonable moral compass/guidance; unreasonable focus on the self, AKA Careerism.

I’m no blue flame special by any means, but I don’t know if I will ever dig myself out of the extreme cynicism that I feel sometimes.

I hope that someone if they are reading this and are in a position of responsibility — go out there and be tough but also be kind, hold your ground but be diplomatic. Fall on your sword if you have to, get back up and then do it again.

And sell your third gen Tundra as soon as possible. Sorry I had to add that.

I have a sous vide machine, and it cooks great. But regardless of the type of plastic, plastic is bad for you to consume. Also regardless of the type of plastic, when you heat up plastic, a lot of molecules leach into your food. This includes non-stick pans, btw.

The thing about Sous Vide is that it will get you to the perfect doneness and tenderness and reduce the chance of developing a gray band but you will still need to put a crust on the steak for it to taste great. Otherwise you are just left with a perfectly boiled in its own juices steak...

@LarryDangerfield posted a picture of a steak a month or two back that had an amazing crust on it. If I had to guess, I would assume it had been cooked in a cast iron pan/skillet. I imagine that steak tasted amazing...

    Hey yall,

Things have been quiet but busy over here for a bit. I have an interview on Monday, fingers crossed! it isnt with the dream job, but it still looks like a huge win.

We got bored the other day, so we took a drive through the back country and went exploring. Really happy i put in that rear breather...

The boy is growing so fast. Started walking on his 10m bday. now he is nearly unstoppable.

    Hope everyone is doing great!
