This is from a local newspaper columnist. She has very strong opinions that I don't always agree with, but this one I do.

Isn’t it a stroke of luck that the Founding Fathers had the foresight to sign the Declaration of Independence in sunny July instead of icy, miserable January?

Picture it: Instead of picnics, sparklers and grilled hot dogs, we’d be huddled in puffer coats trying to light fireworks with numb fingers.

July gave us lemonade and lightning bugs. Not frostbite.

The Founders might not have been thinking about cookout weather, but boy, did they set us up for the ultimate summer celebration.

There’s something fabulous about declaring freedom in the heat of summer. It just feels right: sunny skies during the day and explosions at night!

Had they waited until January, some knucklehead would've suggested celebrating with turkey soup and soggy mittens. Instead, we get beach days and parades, watermelon and music.

The fireworks light up hot skies and kids chase each other with glow sticks long past bedtime.

    Thanks, Founders. We love you!

I think fireworks in January would be kind of cool. We could do them out on the ice. Have a fire. Cook food on said fire.

Fireworks on New Years Eve is the norm in Alaska. Not on the 4th of July. Sun won't even set until around midnight in Anchorage now. Not at all further up north.. Most folks up there are catching salmon right about now.
