This made me laugh. Totally know the feeling!
Excellent info! I didn't know samsung had the issues like that. The SSD was selected early in the build process before I went a little nuttier with the other stuff, and wasn't revisited. Thank you for the insight.

Ah, I see. The supply was recommended by the two gamers/builders in my office due to the plat+ rating, high capacity, and 10 year warranty for the price. Other supplies with similar wattage are anywhere from $100 more on up to nearly double the price.

I appreciate the insight and info. I fully recognize that I'm coming into this as a complete newbie, so I value having multiple inputs. Everyone raises different points to consider so it helps me to have all the info to process for my decisions. I really appreciate you taking the time to educate me, especially from a phone!

Don't get me wrong, EVGA used to be THE brand to get but once they dumped their GPU's and Motherboards which was what they were known for they just aren't the same company.

I forgot to mention, don't get the heatsink with the SSD drive. I didn't look at the layout of your specific motherboard but it will have an m.2 slot with its own heatsink that will attach to your SSD maybe multiple slots with their own heatsinks.

If you use another slot or a heatsink that isn't from your motherboard you may run into issues with fitting your GPU. If you are using an m.2 slot that doesn't have a heatsink with the motherboard already then look at SK Hynix Platinum SSD's as they run cooler but aren't as performance based as the Samsung Pro 990 or WD Black SN850X.

All of this computer talk keeps reminding of me of NobodyinTexas when he asked about computers and I went into all kinds of detail that probably sounded like gibberish to him...

    **Edit**

You can also get a Samsung 990 Pro, toss it into another computer, flash the bios to the latest version and it should be ok. They probably already sold through the stock of bad SSD drives but you never know what is sitting in a warehouse somewhere...

Ok, so I popped up the EVO I had selected, the 990 Pro, and the SN850X for comparison.

Keep in mind I'm a noob and trying to learn, so be gentle. LOL
    Questions:
    1. Would read/write speeds be the performance impacting stats?
    2. If so, am I correct in interpreting read as loading/accessing speed and write as download/install speed?
    3. If that is correct then higher read speed will have a greater impact on things like gaming as it will access the SSD info faster as needed, right?

    upload_2025-1-25_9-0-28.png

If the assumptions above are correct, out comes the trusty calculator to see what the percentage gaps are.

    upload_2025-1-25_9-14-58.png

The EVO has 99.3% the speed of the SN850X with a $50 price savings, and 97.3% the speed of the 990 Pro with a $80 savings. The SN850X has 97.9% of the 990 Pro speed with a $30 savings.

Is the 0.6% extra gap closure on the 990 Pro worth the extra $50 in cost to upgrade to the SN850X?

If it is, can the argument be made that spending an additional $30 on top of that to get the remaining 2.1% would also be "worth it" if the driver updates resolved the early death issue?

These are all true questions because I'm ignorant. This is all just numbers and percentages to me right now. I need help to conceptualize what it translates to in real world use in the PC. :help:

This one you would have to look to youtube where they do side by side testing of these drives. Gamers Nexus/Hardware Unboxed are two good channels. What you are paying for with the Pro and 850X is longer mean time before failure, potentially more DRAM Cache which is noticeable, higher tier binning of the silicone itself and more read/write cycles.

One thing to keep in mind is that for many of these enthusiast level computer products, how they are "binning" the chips themselves, with better quality chips going to the higher end products and the lower performing chips going into the value tier products. Just because some silicone doesn't perform at it highest level, doesn't mean it gets tossed. Instead it goes into the Evo lineup, which is still quite good.

I guess it goes back to my earlier comment, you have an enthusiast CPU, enthusiasts GPU, enthusiast motherboard, enthusiast RAM, enthusiast cpu cooler but a value tier SSD. It's your call on if the juice is worth the squeeze on that.

You are building a bleeding edge computer and everything no matter how pricey is 6-18 months away from being eclipsed by something else.

Perfect example, I am running an AMD 7800x3d CPU, would a 9800x3d CPU be better? Yes. But is it better enough for me to care about? No.

Ooooh, see that's great context that I had no idea about. I didn't even think about the lesser performing silicone. I didn't even know it was a thing TO think about. Mind blown.

It's not something I would give too much thought to if I'm being honest. You have the literal same thing happening with CPU's/GPU's. A 12 core CPU could have 6 bad cores, the manufacturer locks/blocks off the bad 6 cores and sells it as a 6 core CPU.

You wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a native 6 core or cut down 12 core CPU. But these are the things that differentiate the best of the best vs 1 tier lower. I don't want to make it sound like Evo drives are bad. I have one in a laptop. They are just a step down from the flagship line of Pro. Kind of like Toyota vs Lexus.

Bare in mind, I'm just sharing my perspective/understanding of things. I could be wrong about stuff too. I think some side by side testing by Gamers Nexus/Hardware Unboxed would be a more authoritative perspective and then you can decide if the value is there for you from a cost perspective.

SSDs are so much faster than traditional hard drives that I can't see the speed making that much of a difference. Then again, if it were my money I was dropping on a $1000+ gaming rig, I'd probably spend the extra $50 to get the best component.

I was android for years...then the fam made me get an iphone.

iphone is more better. it's easier.

android is complicated. I don't need all that.

and...android is usually 5 years ahead of apple.

I don't think iPhones are easier, quite the opposite. My work gave me one a few years ago and I still haven't figured it out.

That's really where I'm at as well. I hadn't even looked back at the SSD from the initial pick, but I was asking all the questions to try and learn on it. I've avoided computers stuff for a long time, but it's kinda becoming where my job's future is. Time to brush up on it. :D

A generous offer. I kind of want to check out the store, as the guys I work with said they frequently have stuff that they don't advertise in order to thwart scalpers.

If the weather is horrendous and you have time I may take you up on that. Thank you, Sir.

Not a fan of androids and the hack ability they have (from what I’ve read in the years past), or having to worry about storage. I love the iMessage the most. There’s always one person in a group chat who fucks it all up with non-iPhone green messages.
If Tesla does come out with a phone, it’ll need iMessage with it

All I can hear from inside my house is the base. I'm fairly certain I wouldn't like the music, since it's two mid-teens boys. The next time their parents stay out after 10pm on a weeknight, though, the police will find out for me.

I can't wait until summer, when they're out of school and fucks to give about the neighbors.
