I think I just linked a rock tumbler. Was an amateur's amateur rock hound when I was a kid, but not so much now. Unless you get better advice, just don't go cheap and send several grit-grades of medium with the tumbler. Maybe a book on different minerals and rocks. Good lessons in patience and geology to be had with the hobby.

Thank you for the info, but I need context. What is considered cheap, and what is considered decent? I have no frame of reference. I just saw some of them on scamazon and thought they might enjoy it.

Rock Tumblers & Supplies - The Rock Shed

Cheap and fancy kind of go together on these, I think. So something that just plugs in and turns on with a long lasting motor, instead of something with whizbangs and buttons like you'd get on Scamazon.

If the kids in question already collect rocks, and if you know they have a little patience (or if their parents want to grow their patience), you're probably gold getting a rock tumbler. But if they act like little maniacs on crack, and that's just going to be that, they might not understand the gift. They're going to have to clean the rocks, tumble the rocks, clean the rocks, tumble the rocks, clean the rocks, tumble the rocks... to get great results.

 

I'd definitely consult with my brother, or more likely his wife, first. I don't want to give them something that just sits and collects dust. Damn. Some of those prices are nuts.

I'm sorry to hear about your daughters difficulties. Hopefully they can get her meds right sized so this doesn't happen as often.

I used a Thumler's Tumbler for years cleaning up spent brass. Was a great tumbler but probably too big for your average sized rock that rockhounds polish.

My daughter is on about day 9 or 10 of this flu. I just started feeling rotten today.

 

Thanks everybody for the kind words. We got back home and she’s doing pretty good. I carried her from the truck to her room upstairs, so my leg days are paying off too.

 

Man I need to find a ranch house though

 

man there’s a lot of stuff going around right now, damn the Canadian flu is not messing around
