What are y'all using to track steps? I don't track mine or record any hikes. Maybe I should?

I’ve had a Garmin watch on my wrist since January 2016 when I bought a Fenix 3HR.
Currently using the Epix Pro. ~3 week battery life between charges (includes 3-4 hours per week of GPS-tracked activity plus general daily use).

I don’t enter full details of my gym workouts in it, but do measure heart rate and other basics. It also integrates with other apps and equipment like my concept2 rower and bike - I can send heart rate from the watch (which for me has been as accurate as a chest HRM every time I’ve done side-by-side tests) to the concept2 and that will then feed the finished workout with full data (distance, time, splits, cadence, heart rate, pace, grains, etc.) back to the Garmin Connect app that tracks it all.

It will also track ski/snowboard data like run time vs lift time, speed, run distance, vertical feet accumulated and per run, heart rate, etc., along with a map. I know there are tons of other activities it is set up for mapping- kayaking, swimming, rowing, running, etc. I use the hiking ones in the summer a lot (the TOPO maps are small on the watch, but can be handy in a pinch).

My wife has a garmin that we have used in a pinch for route finding. I had no idea it had so much capability though.

I just got a Garmin Venu3s a week ago. I was hot after the Epix Pro, but I want to sleep with it on and didn't think the larger one would work out. The Venu does everything I need it to anyway, and it was half the price of the Epix. I'm a picky sleeper, and wearing the Venu has been fine. Had to configure red shift for night, though, as the face can get a bit annoying when it lights up.

Yeah - the Epix is a big watch. Most any of their recent releases are great for getting tracking, then it comes down to specific uses and which one has features you feel you “have to have”

I use the AutoSleep app for sleep tracking. Don’t really monitor my steps as my phone and watch isn’t on me 24/7 thought the day (I mean it’s at the house and I may be doing whatever and not have it in my pocket / on my wrist)

thanks for all of your detailed insight here. Not that I need to know how many steps/miles I'm walking but I'd be curious to see how many steps I'm putting in at work. I'm on my feet all day there and have always wondered. I'm leaning towards getting something similar for all the other reasons you mentioned outside of recording steps.

The Garmin units measure much more than steps. If that's all you're interested in, get a tracker. They're MUCH cheaper and get that job done. My Garmin measures steps, heart rate, blood oxygen, stress, sleep, and dozens of other stuff. You can take a quick ECG, check the weather, and depending on the model you can store and play music, answer the phone, and get access to other smart devices. Those last three items I'll never use, but the rest of it is nice to know.

Saw something this morning that made my soul smile. Theres a trend around here were Wrangler drivers will have no spare tire, just a rim, sans tire. I've seen this for a few years and always thought what idiocy. Well this morning, my theory came to fruition, some chucklehead was in a parking lot, with a flat tire on his new Rubicon, no spare, just a rim, standing there glaring at it with his arms folded, oh, made my morning.
