I've heard TX is a kick in the nuts with property tax.
WA isn't too bad, 1% of assessed value

    close to 3% in TX.

I would much rather have an income tax.

TX property tax is absurd. My sister was paying over $500 a month just in property tax on a 3 bedroom house. Couple that with the fact that 98% of the state is privately owned so there is no recreating outdoors without paying somebody or having to know somebody, and it's a deal breaker for me.

That's not even mentioning the invasion going on from all sides.

imagine the effect on old folks, that don't have an income.

lather on top of that...the recent (unrealized) increase in home values.

ex...my home. the "value" of my house has tripled since 1998. therefore my taxes have. and yet my cost basis is still the 1998 amount.

There's something wrong when a fixed income senior citizen can't afford their paid-off house.

    damn straight.

at least the rates they pay are locked to the the amount they pay at age 65.

and school tax (75% of the ttl) drops at 65 as well.

my in laws (85yr) pay prop tax ~$2k a year for a house they paid 300k for in 1999. others pay ~$8,500.

    Stupid kid shit - -

When I was 13 we moved to N. Texas. It was the summer of 1980 - a brutal heat wave with 69 days above 100°. Anyway, the tarantulas and scorpions were hiding in the dried up creek near our house just trying to find water and staying cool. My new friends and I would put them in jars to fight. I thought I was slick getting the scorpions to perk their tails up and catching them. My friends were so impressed. Until I rubbed my eyes.

The doctor poured powder in my eyes - I guess antivenom or antibiotics - and bandaged them up for three days. Not my proudest moment, but definitely kid shit. At least it was unintentional - - this dude in the video is an idiot.

If you wanna piss of the HOA; just use some old self-labled 'no wake allowed' laundry soap containers for buoys, and I'll be they'll get it back up to standards by the weekend... after they fine you of course

For the most part this is true... the state and the feds need a budget, and it comes from taxes; they get you one way or another and either way you end up paying about the same by the time it's all said and done.

So, moral of the story is... find somewhere to live that makes you happy and has the least amount of frustrations or 'stressors' and let the rest of that shit work itself out

I don't "feel" it's valuable. I said it provides data. I don't know how valuable that data is, but I imagine it's got some value, somewhere. Purely speculating.

    For me...

I'd prefer to be taxed on what I spend (sales tax); rather than what I earn or being taxed more heavily on property owned. My reasoning for this is that EVERYONE buys stuff (regardless of where your money comes from) and most folks buy stuff proportionate to the amount of income they have. So, when it comes to paying taxes (at least in my opinion), I believe the 'fairest way to do this if there is such a thing' is by what we spend.

Someone making 100k is likely to spend twice as much buying 'stuff' as someone making 50k, so they pay double into the tax burden...

likewise someone that makes under 50k or is even supported to some degree by 'programs' still has to spend money buying 'stuff'; and therefore they pay taxes as well based on their purchases of 'stuff', just to a lessor degree. But, at least they are paying into the system that helps support them.

Those that make FU money will buy some expensive 'stuff' and pay and higher share of taxes through their purchases than the folks making 100-200k, etc...

Having no sales tax (like here in OR), leaves folks paying taxes based on income and property ownership. So, the folks that don't earn or earn very little, don't pay taxes on goods or property (if they are renting), have minimal taxes going out on income (if any), and yet they benefit from the available programs that taxes pay for (to me this is disproportionate) :notsure:

On the other hand, one of the nice benefits of living in Oregon is that if you are receiving income from the military based on a 'rated' disability/retirement, you don't pay tax on that and you are exempt from any property taxes... which I think is pretty awesome!!
