Definitely nice to keep them all in the same family. Makes the battery a non issue when you have a surplus.

This kinda still blows my mind. Guy from Wyoming living out there all alone with no tools. I would've figured you for a guy who doesn't like to pay for services. Yet you don't want to do the services yourself? Not poking fun, just can't wrap my mind around it.

I don't either. Hand saw all the way. My dad finally bought himself a (gas) chainsaw for our family lake lot a couple years back.

Yeah, grew up without any kind of real father figure so never really caught the mechanic/tool bug. If I had a wood burning stove I would have a chainsaw, but I don't. Just not really a reason for it. I don't like to pay for services unless it's for stuff I can't do or don't know how to do. I do some stuff like oil changes, I've done spark plugs, radiator flushes, etc. but it's just never been something I enjoy. If I can pull of building my little house I'd like, then I will have a fireplace. If there is such a thing I'd like a gas one that can also burn wood, but IDK if that's realistic.

Right now I'm in caretaker mode for my elderly mother who lives with me. After she passes I'll worry about getting stuff set up how I'd like it for the property. As it stands, I have a 73 year old toddler who throws tantrums about it being her house/place and it's easier to just let the baby have her bottle.

With that background I can understand. I also grew up without a dad but all my core friend group were all motor heads so I started learning how to wrench on things in my early tweens. It's a passion that's not for everyone. And I, fell in love with the process because I like to understand how things work.

Good on you for caring for the woman who raised you. Not an easy task, but something you will hopefully reflect upon later in life as a value in that you got to be with her while you had the chance. Some people end up carrying guilt when their parents pass because they didn't do enough before they did.

Yeah, I had planned to get into wrenching. I was gunning to get a car that would make me want to work on them when I was 15. Found a blue '72 Corvette Stingray that was $2500 that I wanted to buy. I knew it'd need work but I planned to get the repair manual and do all of it. Because I wasn't an adult and didn't have full control of my funds (or a way to get the car) I fell victim to the overprotective mother scenario of "you'll wrap it around a tree!" Wound up in a bunch of uninspiring cars that I hated for years and just lost the desire to learn. I can do basics, but have no love for it. C'est la vie.

I love my Mom, and frequently enjoy her company most days. Others I want to switch off her oxygen machine. If I wasn't here to take care of her she would have to be in a home, so I'm glad I can prevent that.

How does she get along while you're at work for 12 hours, if you don't mind my asking?

She's not immobile or anything, but she is on 5 liters of O2 per minute. She cannot drive or really leave the house unassisted. She doesn't go anywhere but to her annual doctor appointment and that is only for her prescription renewals. She is overweight with a severely diminished lung capacity from decades of smoking and cannot breathe, but can move about the house if she sits down between trips. She refuses to go to the doctor for any treatment beyond her diabetic and heart meds as she is just wanting to be comfortable enough to die at home. A prison of her own making as it were.

I grew up without a father until 16. By that time, I was all about girls, sports, and friends. Did not care about learning anything. When YT finally became a thing and we purchased our first home (2009?) I began to learn a lot. I still depend on it, a lot. It’s taught me tons and I’ve taught others some as I there are some projects I enjoy learning and doing. I’ve been collecting tools since 2009 or so, and will never stop as there is no need to do so. You never know when you or a friend will need said tool.
