It's been above freezing here even at night but we're under a water ban right now. Apparently the water treatment plant had a pump failure or something like that.

I was looking at the guidelines they sent out when they announced the ban on non-essential water use and wondering who still leaves the tap running while they brush their teeth in this day and age.

 

I would totally overreact and make her cry.
"WTF!!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!!! WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL......."

 

Hopefully you quote vehicles enough where you walk away happy, even if they don't tip

Vetting people who you want to undertake a project like that but there's another thing. CONTRACTS!! Use them, read them, follow them. OP had $76K to dump into a toy, but not apparently $5K to have a lawyer build a contract for him...

 

A 25% tip seems good to me...but yes, you should up your rates. $20-25/hr isn't enough.

 

I think a lot of folks get the whole 20% thing stuck in their head, and they don't look at it from a perspective of I really should have paid $250-$300 for this so I'll tip the difference

 

Sorry, can't get on board with that sentiment. The price should be enough you don't expect a tip, so tips are a bonus. Plus, if you only charge a hundred bucks, you'll get people who can only afford a hundred bucks. Bump the price, or do estimates based on pics before hand.

I know I sound like a jerk, but your OCD is not her fault. She paid what was asked, and thanked you with a tip.

I also remember hearing that you are generally only expected to tip employees of companies. If someone owns the business/is a 1-person operation, you're not expected to tip them because all the money is going to them anyway. Just what I was told a few years ago when we were planning our wedding.

 

You do great work! I truly have a car I would love for your OCD hands to caress. Unfortunately, I'm south of you on the surface of the sun. I'd even pay a few hundred bucks for my truck to be detailed like that! Very nice and well done.
