Yeah, I get that lot too when I'm traveling...it's like they learned engrish from Bay Watch.

I do enjoy working in foreign countries and listening to them talk in their native language. Especially when they use a word for something invented in the US and suddenly there's an english word stuff into a bunch of jabber. Portuguese is a cool mix of Spanish and French, at least to the my ear.

There's a word in Chinese that sounds kind of similar to the "N" word. It means "this or that" or "so so" and is a filler word. I was in a meeting once where the customer had served us wine at lunch and the local rep had one too many. So this word became slurred a bit and sounded exactly like the "N" word. One of my coworkers traveling with us was (I guess still is) black, so it was really uncomfortable. Especially since you used it just like "Like"...as in "its like, like, like..." so the word kept getting repeated.

LMAO! I'd bust up at that because it's 100 percent innocent and highlights the absurdity of the power one word can have.

Nah. It's what keeps the people away.

    Pick two.*

    Lower cost of living
    Fewer people
    No snow**

    *Not all combinations are realistic
**If selecting "No snow" you may not select "Fewer people"

A few... Definitely more than 2
Due to a bad decision in high school, I ran for my schools cross country team... 5k is 3.1 miles and ever since then I have been able to get pretty close converting distance in my head. I also do math for a living so I know all the conversions, I just don't like to do the conversions cuz :oldglory:

You would not have to do conversions if we only used metric! And within metric it is much simpler.

You know, I had know idea you were a communist when I met you. o_O

True the metric is simple because it's all factors of 10 or 100, but it's also memorizing stupid new words for every factor of 10/100. My brain is past the memorization phase of things.

I think you have it backwards. A kilometer is .6 hectares, or 2 parsects, 5 bar, 8 furlongs, 3 wee drams, or 1 killer pascal.

I'll take no snow and no people.
I'm thinking a nice, isolated island in a warm climate. Just a few square miles, lowland forest, source of fresh water.
Just drop me off with my Leatherman and a couple tiddy books. I'd be set.

Hubs and I use metric when we woodwork. I got kms forced on me in aviation. Hard to visualize vs a mile, still dont care for it. But sounds more impressive saying you flew 50kms vs 25 miles.

That's why I want an island that's forested.

And all of those "stupid new words" have Latin roots with easy meanings. Unlike memorizing 12 inches in a foot (new word), 3 feet in a yard (new word), 1 chain (new word) is 22 yards, 1 furlong (new word) is 220 yards, 1760 yards or 5,280 feet in a mile (new word), 8 ounces (new word) per cup (new word), 2 cups per pint (new word), 2 pints per quart (new word), 4 quarts per gallon (new word), 16 ounces (new word but different from liquid ounces) per pound (new word), etc. I think you get the point. Then having to memorize all of the conversions because American science (Fauci???) uses the metric system. 2.54 cm per inch; 3.78 liters per gallon; etc.

    Nah, I don't bother converting.
There's no centimeters in an inch and no liters in a gallon.
I also use a lot of old school universal measurements.
A handful, a scoop, a drop, a smidge, a little more, a little less, heavy, light, a C hair, etc.

Didn't say that you didn't have to memorize for both, I just said my brain is past the easy learn and memorize phase of life so I don't want to try again with a new one when the one I have works fine.

Our paper maps are metric, our road signs are in miles, our speedos are mph, we use mpg but buy our gas in litres.

As an engineer, I measure stuff in metric.
As a wood butcher I measure in either but generally imperial, my timber comes as 4"x 2" and once upon a time would have billed in cubic feet but is now in cubic metres...

Well I know you are at least 20 years younger then me! (And the system does work.) I just had to learn both systems.
