Maybe find a compromise; get a track bike and only ride at the track. Then you only get hurt if you eff up.

 

Or get a Spyder or Ryker.

 

Then get a bike that isn't crazy. Something like what I got. It's every bit as fast as my WRX was, but for a bike that's not crazy. Everyone says it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow anyway.

 

Not a whole lot beyond looking at them. The season is too short here, the roads too bad and other drivers are too stupid for me to get into riding bikes.

Offroad is more my style anyways and I prefer quads and side by sides over dirtbikes.

Growing up in a first responder family, I've seen the pics and heard the stories too. That killed alot of my interest pretty early on.

 

That was my intention when I bought the Kawi. Then reality hit and I realized I couldn't afford a hobby like that. $1000 for a track suit, burn through $250+ in tires every weekend (this was 2008), would need a trailer, closest track was 300 mi away,....the list was longer but I didn't need any more reasons. Ended up just joy riding it for a few years. Did one long road trip from Buffalo, NY to Charlotte, NC. On a crotch rocket?
Not recommended. That's when I realized I'd enjoy a touring bike much more. But life rolled on and there was never another bike in the cards.
I'm holding out for EV one man helicopters/drones. That'll be my next nice weather toy.

 

Ah. Sadness. I hate to see somebody spooked off by the anecdotal worst cases. It's like never setting foot in the ocean because people get killed by sharks. (I use that example ironically because I have no interest in the ocean because I fear big water. ) Don't get me wrong. I am not blind. An accident on a bike is a bad deal, but they are far from the deathtraps they are projected to be. There are lots of mitigating factors in the danger equation, and there are a ton of idiots that don't do themselves any favors, so the stats get skewed.

My mother's fear prevented me from riding for way too long. I had many opportunities as a kid but I was always disallowed because of her hysteria. Hypocritically, she rode on the back of bikes many times in her youth. I find it fun, relaxing, and even therapeutic at times, so I am a little bitter about how it was forbidden in my youth. I'd be so much further along as a rider if I had started when I was interested.

I also believe that riding a motorcycle makes you a better driver. You can't be inattentive. You become keenly aware of your vulnerability and how dangerous/scary a car is, and that stays with you when you get behind the wheel. It helps put the act of driving in a proper perspective. Everybody should ride for at least a season, just so they pull their head our of their ass when they are in a car. Not saying yours is lodged anywhere, but you get my point.

Damn are we all short except for @NWPirate ? I’m 5’10” on a good day and buy 32/32’s just cause I hate it when jeans don’t go over my boots.

 

Zach might have short legs too. Could be all torso like @RichterScale and @Outbound are. We may all have "short" legs, but you guys that are over 5'9" don't get to claim being short.

 

That's why the CB500 bikes are perfect. Cheap and easily modded but not at crazy cost. They also last forever.

 

Does she have any interest in a bike or scooter? You guys could do a couple's trip with something like Ride Adventure to site see and ride bikes.

I wouldn't say spooked, more a lack of faith in humanity. My best friend is a rider, and I've seen his helmet cam videos. It's not the rider, it's the other drivers. You can be as skilled and drive as defensively as you want, all it takes is one bad driver at just the wrong time and it's game over. Same could be said for driving a pickup but there's more protection in a pickup.

I also prefer air conditioning, tunes, comfortable seats and not having to wear leather and a helmet on road trips.

Oh, and I have enough expensive hobbies.

 

I'd sell it and buy a long range rifle. Or put the money into my boat fund (in case you didn't know, boats are expensive. Especially boats that run shallow rivers....)

This band is so hot/cold for me. I was at the Worcester show where he lost his shit and it's been hard to get back onboard. Even taken the oldest to a show and he was still a bit of a prick. Jason Hook leaving makes it even harder for me to like them since the response was... unplanned? Just too much drama, unfortunately.

 

Not sure if it applies to these specific beetles, but garlic concentrate like Mosquito Barrier works well on all sorts of things and is 100% safe for everything since it is 99.9% garlic. Cuts mosquitos down by over 50% and also keeps stinkbugs away
