Neither of us have it as bad as @Jim LE 1301 in New York.

My attempts to escape to New Hampshire were thwarted a few years ago. Would be a lot easier if I didn't have family here.

Yeah...we pay about $400 a month in tax on our home. That's probably going to go up this year as they are doing another town assessment, and based on market prices alone, they will jack my rates.

Our property tax is 1% of assessed value, no state tax. Registration on the Tundra is about $100/year

 

Oh...we pay registration every other year too. That's another $300 for the Tundra because as a truck, it has combination plates.

I understand a property tax on land, but on vehicles?

All states have their ways of getting their money. It all works out the same in the end. The "luxury tax" on vehicles, based on their age/value is pretty fukin stupid though, even if there are other financial benefits in the states that do it.
NY bases their registration fees on vehicle weight/class. The heavier the vehicle, the higher the registration fee. The idea is that heavier vehicles are more wear/tear on the roads. etc. It actually makes sense. And it's about the only thing in NY that makes sense. Aside from that, it's one of the most, if not THE most politically and financially corrupt states in the nation.
But, people leave because they don't like the weather

 

Now I understand how NY can grant so much to special needs kids. We get nothing from CT, but some of the "kids" from NY are getting grants upwards of 50k per year.

I'm northwest of Hartford, and have lost all hope of escape. My mom's in her mid 70s, but will probably live into her 90s which would put me nearing 70, and I probably wont make it that far.

 

Move her with you, never too late.

When we left NH in 2014 I watched all my "Sin Taxes" disappear...property tax was about to blossom into a nightmare

Florida does "Survive" on their sales Tax and 1st time registrations BUT what I pay to tag all 3 vehicles now would not even touch one year in NH..

I can't imagine paying those Tax bills .....

Now insurance is another matter BUT again ,you get what you pay for...Full coverage has saved my A$$ the last 3 years


We have friends that left NY,NY to live in Mystic CT and they are now living the dream BUT after reading some of these comments that scares me

on the expenses that you all pay..yearly..

It's crazy, but all states find a way to collect a good 10%-12% of your entire income one way or another..

Yeah...that will never happen. I think she wants to die in her home. My dad and my grandma both died in that house.

@snoope Covid scared a ton of folks from NYC into CT. Our floundering real-estate market boomed, and houses sold in days for substantially over asking price. Hell...my mom was offered a million twice site unseen.
