but why would anyone want to waste there time in a fixed wing when rotorcraft is where it’s at?!?
I’m also a straight white guy and when I was going through my private pilot license I quickly realized there wasn’t much of anything besides high interest loans as well. Pretty much sucked. I didn’t wanna do the military either but tried my hand at the Coast Guard office after showing them my current private license and asked what the chance would be to become a pilot. The recruiter told me if I was lucky and everything went right I could see a PIC seat in about 11years! No thanks.

 

I did ground school three years ago because my company paid for it. Everyone with their private license loves to joke about the $100 hamburger lunch. Rent a plane, fly to a small airport and get a burger. Costs $100 because of the plane rental and fuel. Except, it is closer to $200 now. The class included a free flight but I declined. Partially because of Covid back then, but also because I knew it would be yet another expensive hobby.

Still fun to dream!

The other thing that sunk it was that you start of basically owned by whoever you hire on with as a trainer. They know you need hours so they don't pay well, and your buried in debt. Just wasn't feasible for me then. I regret not diving in anyway, but I've always been cautious.

I’ve kept it just as a hobby since I wouldn’t want a job flying but I still need to get back up in the air and take my friends around. No other experience like it.

 

If I were 10 years younger I might pursue it as a hobby, but I've moved to other interests. It'd just be salt in the wound for my missed dream job now.

 

I dunno. I think there is always time for a change if it’s still desired despite age…

 

Not into a field where time in equals value. It'd be a significant pay cut and take at least 5 years to get back to making what I am now. Possibly a decade.

 

You’re right I suppose. Well nix some truck mods and pay as you go to just get your private license flying 2-3 times a month? It’s still a lot of fun even if you never worked towards a job as a pilot.

 

I've thought about it before, but I don't think I want to. Like I said, salt in the wound and too many other interests.

Helicopter pilot. If you mean more specifically, I would have loved to fly a life flight helicopter.

Funny you say that cause as a firefighter/EMT I deal with lifeflight on some calls and always wondered about going that career route. When I asked one of their pilots years ago they only used to take ex military guys with like 20,000 hours. Fast forward to today and they mentioned they just hired a young 27yr old female with barely 2,000 hours!

Wouldn’t mind flying for them.
