Time for Larry's Late Night Philosophy ™

In tonights episode we ponder mental illness. If you were to ask a random person, "Do people struggling with mental illness deserve friendship and kindness?" The vast majority of people would answer "of course!" But if you were to ask that same person to be friends and show kindness to a specific person with specific mental illnesses, then the answer is not so simple. What are your guys's thoughts?

The reason this all came about is I was out running errands when my mom's friend's daughter called asking her if she could use my parents truck to move a bed. I figured we were already out and about and I would just swing by and use my truck. We moved it for her and I didn't even give it a second thought. A while later my mom met up with her friend and the daughter and apparently even after all that time she still was talking about how thankful she was fot the fact that I helped move the bed. I was thinking since such a small thing meant so much that I would send some more kindness her way. The only issue is that she has dealt with severe mental illness for the majority of her life. (Think so severe that the state will take a child from her if she ever gets pregnant. Words I overheard straight from her mouth.) So on one hand my natural instinct to be kind comes out. But on the other hand my very strong sense of self preservation kicks in as well as my extreme hate for drama. There lies the conundrum. (Also I am gun shy because in high school I'd befriended someone with mental health issues and it ended up involving the school officer...) Discuss.

Also, thank you to tonight's sponsor: Cheez Whiz-- Cheese so good it'll make you Whiz™

So, I'll respond to this; but first I gotta ask....

When you say, 'I would send some more kindness her way'.... What specifically are you referring to???

Also, is she someone you are feeling like you are having a 'romantic' interest in, or just 'hey she was appreciative and it made me feel good; therefore I want to do more for her'

She just moved out on her own so more kindness would be things like groceries, toiletries, small appliances, maybe an offer for lunch on me, that kind of thing. As for second question, no romantic interest. Just feels good to make people feel good plus the (admittedly scary) possibility of making a friend.

    It's a different world now.
I would be nice and polite from a distance. Continue to help out when things come up, through your mom. Only when it's convenient for you though, wouldn't want to give her a romantic impression like you're bending over backwards for her.

Good on ya for helping out.

I guess the thing that I struggle with is that if everybody listens to their instincts and is kind from a distance, how does the person with mental illness ever have any friendship or companionship?

You can be friends, but don't do anything you wouldn't do for an average dude. Would you be buying small appliances for a guy who wasn't disabled? Best thing you can do is pretend the disability doesn't exist, and only give extra help if it's requested.

Ok, I'm back; so here we go...

Disclaimer: I am not a mental health professional or a licensed therapist, although I am very well versed in Operant Conditioning and Behavior Modification (mainly as it pertains to dogs)...

My comments are based on personal/professional experience and do NOT reflect an industry standard for appropriate behavior or interaction with said prospect. In other words, follow my advice at your own risk... and I'm really just spitballing here, so my points may not have an appropriate flow to them.

So, before we continue, are these gestures things you would do for anyone else (boy or girl) if all things were equal minus your perception of her mental health??

Yes, although I admit gender does play a role in the sense it's a reason for some of my hesitancy in the fact that I didn't want her getting the impression that I'm being nice because want to date her or the act of being nice makes her want to date.

The next episode of Larry's Late Night Philosophy ™ will be talking about truck forums. Are they filled with great helpful people? Or are they actually filled with enablers who take pleasure in sending fellow peers into debt via irresponsible truck and truck part purchases?

That episode will be brought to you by Nike: Just do it™

I’ve read all the replies to your original question and generally agree with everyone’s response.

I think doing something for this woman, independent of her mental state, is high risk if you initiate it. Either it will make you appear interested in her (possibly making her uncomfortable) or she will become interested in you. Since neither reaction is desired, then I say move along. Be nice to her again if another random situation arises, but don’t initiate anything.

Random acts of kindness are fun and I feel like they are even better when initiated by strangers. Spread them around.

I am someone who always helps someone in need. If someone calls me for help, there’s a good chance I’m going to do it. I do agree with other reposted here. Idk if I would follow it up with additional items as that could be perceived (on her end) as something more which may lead her on

Saturday laundry night party? Man you live the danger life!

I learned in my 30’s that you can either always have CC debt or restrain yourself for a few years, save your money and then only buy what you can pay for in cash.

I didn’t do this with cars/trucks, but with wine. Twice a year we’d go wine tasting and buy a ton of wine. Pay that CC bill off after 4-6 months and do it again. It was a stupid cycle and thankfully broken when my second child was born. We had to rework the finances when we decided my wife wasn’t going back to work.

Today, my CC is setup to auto pay the full balance each month. I keep the points and don’t ever pay interest. I auto-transfer money into savings and use that to help offset expensive CC months. As long as my savings keeps increasing then I’m winning.

My wife had the cash to buy her Corolla about 10 years ago so she gave her dad the money and he bought the car on his visa for the cash back or rewards or whatever it is his card gives him.
