No. It's Friday. I'm not coming back to the office for 7 days, so it's definitely Friday.

Today is both Monday and Friday, yesterday was Sunday and so is tomorrow and Friday will be Monday again. Not sure what to call Thursday because I don't have work but I'm also not free :notsure: and then Sunday I finally walk for my college diploma. This week is wild!

Thanks! It's already just a piece of paper for me really since I have been working in my chosen field for about a year and a half already on top of completing my course requirements.

    Even better!
I went to tech school for refrigeration, it was pretty easy as long as you were awake in class, I got top tech in my class for overall average above 96% or something. Been doing some form of it for 16 years maybe?

There are a couple additional courses that I may consider but current plan is to summer for a month or two and then hop in full time to working and adulting.

Ive never wrapped my head fully around degrees. Most of it does not apply in the real world, IMO. Just an expensive piece of paper.

It is, but depending on your field it can affect pay, bonuses, raises, and eligibility for promotions. I hate that, because I hate school. I'm not dumb (all the time) and I can usually do whatever my employer wants me to so long as I get proper training. Then grow organically from there. I'm considering some online certs just to help solidify my position and to possibly make myself more attractive to another company if I have to leave here. Sucks always applying for entry level and having to work your way up, and I'm getting to old to start at the bottom again.

Definitely agree. The most my college courses did was weed out the truly stupid people. I learned more in the first month working than in all my years of school combined (including before college)

I get it. Hell, some cops I know have degree in a completely different field, but its counted as they (department) sees it as a degree. To me, it makes no sense especially when the best learning is by doing

There have been some companies that are waking up and putting more stock in experience than degrees again. It's slow, but I think they are starting to realize that education does not equal capability or intelligence. I've met plenty of educated idiots and plenty of uneducated people that are absolutely brilliant. The paper means little, IMO.

I'm not going to try to guess what day it is. I've been working 6 days a week since mid March with Saturdays off. This week, I have Thursday off then have to work through to Tuesday. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I mean, I get it for some things. For example, if you need a book editor a degree in english is certainly a plus. However, a degree in cultural anything, arts, and other less "hard" topics aren't going to do you any good without going for a doctorate and pursuing a job as a teacher/professor.

How many people out there in the work force have a degree that has nothing to do with their career? I have a brother who got a degree to be a teacher, didn't like the BS games of working for the school system, and is now working an industrial job. Have a friend with an accounting degree who has bounced from bartending to admin work and now is working an IT job. Another friend has degrees in biology and conservation, specifically freshwater fish, and he's a gas man.

Speaking of not "hard" topics, I just wrapped up a Sociology class for my GE requirements, and the last week of class I was finally involved in my first class discussion that I couldn't wiggle my way out of. Without getting to much into politics here, I took a class of 25 borderline socialists and they/thems with the professor in tow on a long-winded explanation of all the historical demerits of communism, that was a good time. Then me, the math guy, who can barely spell my own name without autocorrect BSed an 8 page paper basically backhandedly dissing everything that we learned the whole semester and got a 96%. Honestly, I'm still kinda baffled by that whole struggle session.

Another good memory was 3 years back before the world went into lockdown, I was walking through the hallway and I heard something along the lines of, "I'm planning to go into charity/nonprofit work and here I am failing all my classes. WHAT AM I DOING HERE?" I about died laughing at that one. College is a weird place these days.

Either way, @APalmTree, good on your for being able to get it done and earn your paper. If you have a point in your future where a boss or company wants it, you've checked that box. I couldn't do it. My lack of filter would surely have seen me straight out of class on many an occasion. Well done.

I know we're unpopular here but can't be an engineer without a degree. I love being a process engineer and can't imagine doing anything else but I've spent my whole career at operating sites. My brother is an electrical engineer and, after 3 years working for an engineering firm, he's considering something else like a trade or opening his own brewery or something.

Wife is a dental hygienist. Can't do that without either 3 or 4 years of university/college either.

It is an expensive piece of paper, but that paper only represents that you chose to do something, stuck with it, and completed something that took time and dedication. The paper does not necessarily make you rich, it enriches your mind and expands your horizons by opening more opportunity. Additionally, since this is a material world and people are not always honest, it provides proof of an accomplishment that is recognized and respected by most of humanity. The fact is, in my experience, it makes a difference on a person. Sure there are plenty of rich people without a college education, but I have found that the lack of said education will always come out somehow, sometime, for instance, saying something ignorant or what not. What you receive in college cannot be quantified with money, even though it has to be, but that is also the reason why you can never get away from paying your education debts, because there is no way to repo an expanded mind.

I understand that, and I'm not saying that degrees are of no value. I'm just saying lots of things require degrees that don't really need them or that there are a lot of degrees that don't add any value. It's just something to waste your money on.

I think the most important thing I learned in university was how to approach a problem and think through to the solution.

Agreed 100%. Out of all the classes I took between my 2 degrees in engineering and psychology, the classes that have been the most useful for me in everyday life were Personal Finance, Critical Thinking, Human Sexuality and College Algebra.

Plenty of educated people say ignorant things, too. That paper doesn't mean the mind was expanded, or that they stuck to anything. Plenty of people cheat or cheese their way through things in college. It has value, but not nearly what people think it does. As I said, I've met plenty of educated idiots. Education should not be conflated with intelligence.

Intelligence was not mentioned once, and that was by design. The fact that you falsely extrapolated that is an illumination into your own biases, which spectacularly illustrated my point.
