I just found out that this young soldier took his life yesterday. He worked for me back in 2015 and never once saw him without a smile on his face...he was always there raising others up, being a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen. This is quite a shock to those of us who knew him.

This is the time of year when suicides go up....depression goes up....the need for someone to be there for you goes up. Don't be afraid to reach out when you need that person to talk to. Don't be afraid to be the person who checks o their friends and family to ensure they are ok and be there for them if they need you.

 

Very sorry to hear this Bree. This is the time of year when tragedies like this happen. Prayers for his family and friends.
Like Bree stated go speak to someone if you need to vent, it's worth it.

I'm sick of "22 a day". What drives my fellow Veterans to do that?
What makes them go the path of a permanent solution to a temporary problem? I have no idea.
There is a stigma to talking to someone about you being depressed. There is a stigma about telling others that you have PTSD.
When a Veteran snaps, others ask, "Why didn't he seek help? Why didn't he talk to someone?"

Because society tells Veterans to not talk about it, for fucks sake! Your employer will hold it against you. Your "friends" will hold it against you. People will second guess you. People won't want to associate with you. Any future employer will hold it against you when they find out, if they hire you at all.
Veterans that are severely depressed or have PTSD keep that door closed to others. Their "life" is safe that way. Until... unti...
Then it's too late.

“To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan”...
But don't tell anyone about your depression or PTSD, because it will be held against you.

 

Amen. Though they are trying to change this your process....but it doesn't seem to be changing

First responders and medical are right up there with vets....we need to think of them too

Yes, they are at the front line of most trauma, always expected to hold it in but thats so hard, need all the support they can get.

I try to reach out to him when ever I can after he sat down and we had a chat about the stuff he's seen and the friends he has lost.
