Good morning. Rough evening last night. My daughters were on the way to a concert, and got in an accident. For whatever reason, my daughter ran a red light, and another car hit them.
Luckily it was pretty low speed. (Driving in downtown Houston). Everyone is ok thankfully. Airbags deployed on their side and knocked the hell out of them.
My older girl has pretty bad bruising on her face and shoulder. Younger one lost hearing on one side from the sound of the airbag going off in the side of her face.
ER doctor said her hearing should return in a day or two, that her eardrum wasn’t ruptured. Two of their friends were with them, they were both fine.
They were in my older girl’s Honda Fit. I haven’t seen the damage to it. It was towed before I got there.
My daughter isn’t sure how she missed the light. Wasn’t looking at her phone or anything. All I can guess was she was trying to figure out where she was going since she hadn’t driven downtown before.

This was the first time I’d let them make a trip like that on their own. I’ve always driven them before. Should have taken them myself like usual.

Nothing you can do to prevent that accident now! She was licensed to drive. You’ve gotta cut the cord sometime: I understand the impulse to blame your self, but from my perspective your not at fault. Maybe instead of driving them around down town, have them drive so next time they’ll be more comfortable getting around by themselves? Also, I’d have a chat with her about what she may have done differently to avoid the accident, not a lecture, just a friendly conversation. Not telling you what to do, just sharing some thoughts

Teenagers get into accidents. That’s why their insurance is so expensive. I totaled a truck (19), a car (23), and a motorcycle (20). I also had a ton of fender benders and laid down a few different motorcycles. Shit happens, but it can get chalked up to being part of the learning curve.

Front passenger is my co pilot / navigator. Responsible for giving directions on where we’re headed if I have questions, playing my music, distributing snacks... everything I can delegate so I can focus just on driving without the extra distractions. I’ll even have them answer my phone if it seems important. (I don’t fiddle with my phone in the car and the only calls I generally take while driving is from my wife or work.)

Even if your girls were screwing around causing them to miss the light (not saying she was) they hopefully learned a lesson the hard way. I’m sure she’ll be more cautious next time. Just thankful everyone came out ok!! (I’m assuming the occupants of the other vehicle are safe as well?)
