I'll jump into this 'dialog'... cuz there's 2 sides of the fence to debate here

Can't remember who said that they'd 'dime out' the perp if they had name/info, but here's my perspective on it...

9 times out of 10 there's an explanation why an event occurred, why it wasn't immediately resolved, and it's usually not criminal or malicious in nature; either it was purely accidental, there was some other emergent/pressing situation the person(s) were working through, the responsible party had no idea who to contact (IE>>> I've got no idea who owns or is responsible for this), etc....

Bottom line, IMO, is that most of us are honest people and will take responsibility for something we did (right or wrong), and knowing that if it were ME w/the information about YOU, I'd give you the benefit of the doubt; meaning I'd PM you directly and say, 'Hey, this looks like you/your rig, and it looks like LE is trying to contact the folks involved. You may want to reach out to XXXX agency and see what they need before they contact you via other means'...

I struggle w/the fact that folks here may feel obligated or enticed to try and connect the dots based on an article, a post, a newsfeed, or whatever and what limited info they have about you or me from interaction on this forum...

Again, I am in no way condoning intentional (or accidental) desecration of public land or private property, but on the other hand let's give each other the benefit of the doubt, man up, and reach out directly to whomever you think is responsible and see if you can't encourage or motivate them to 'do the right thing' if (in fact) they weren't already heading down that path

 

The multiple times I've had people hit and run my vehicles makes me feel differently. There is a pervasive "it's only illegal if you get caught" mentality, and a huge push toward nothing being "your" fault. It's always your parent's, or society's, or the patriarchy's, or (insert trendy boogeyman of the day here) that is to blame. Personal responsibility is a dying trait.

The shopping cart litmus test is an internet joke, but I think it has a degree of merit to it, and there's a whole lot of unreturned carts roaming the parking lots. That's a no penalty scenario and people don't do the objectively correct thing. Add in the risk of penalty and the number of people willing to just bail to avoid taking responsibility goes up... a lot.

I do agree with the rest of your post, though. If I knew the person I would definitely be talking to them to try and get them to do the right thing.
