Rudy was the last dog I worked professionally; and while his prey drive was over the top (he was nicknamed HoneyBadger during initial training), he was also a dog that was highly pack driven and just wanted to be a part of whatever you were doing. I was fortunate to be able to care for him and continue to 'work' him in his retirement. I did my best to keep him in shape, healthy, and to keep his brain going strong (a lot of scent work and problem solving) after he was no longer 'earning a paycheck'.

Rudy was born in Holland and imported to the US just prior to his 1st birthday (that's a tough flight for a young dog)...

At the time, the vendor we we using was also under contract w/the US Army for supplying dogs to the Army's TED program (Tracking and Explosive Detection). These dogs would receive their initial detection, tracking and apprehension training from the vendor while in Indiana and then would head to the SouthWest (Yuma) to finish up their initial training in the desert to acclimate more to the environment they were to be deployed in. From there they'd end up back in Indiana where they'd be paired up w/a handler to complete their initial training prior to being shipped back overseas for deployment.

Rudy was purchased by the vendor w/the intention of being selected for this program... However, since he had been in the US for only a few days, the vendor had not had the opportunity to pre-screen any of the pups from their most recent import. I had an extremely good relationship w/the vendor, and he knew that one of the dogs I was purchasing that week was going to be mine (this was going to be my 3rd dog). The vendor allowed my team and I the opportunity to do selection testing on any of his available dogs, plus any of the ones we wanted to put our hands on from their most recent import (which included Rudy). I'll spare everyone my usual verbal vomit and just say that I was blessed to have had the opportunity to spend nearly 12.5 years of this dog's incredible 13.5 year life in not only a professional capacity, but also as close friends/companions in both of our retirements.

Still a young dog and first day in Vegas at his new home...

About a year and a half later (fully grown and properly conditioned)... and in the spirit of @T-Rex266

sportin' some triceps, shoulders and puppy abs (he put on weight and size for another year or so)...

We didn't do much sleeve work at all (most of our bite training is on full suits), but I'd say this is the definition of a full mouth bite...

Rudy's first year of retirement & his first 'vacation' during Christmas in San Diego; nothing like some Christmas Bells to soften the appearance...

Watching over the Tundra when I'm out of it running an errand...

Just prior to my retirement (2018) house shopping for our retirement home on the Oregon Coast...

Just being a dog (playin' w/the wife's pup)....

The thing that hit me the hardest was coming home after dropping him off to be cremated and that damned empty house feeling. Yes, I have other pups that I've been spending time with and loving on, but it's different. Nothing feels right, nothing looks right, and nothing (I mean nothing) in the house smelled like him anymore...
How is his existence gone so quickly???

One advantage to the dealership is that they can generally provide a loaner vehicle, and if they can't you can possibly get Toyota to cover a rental for the duration. I know @1lowlife had that happen when his cats were stolen and the dealership couldn't get parts for repairs. I would think it would be even easier when it's warranty work.

I only got about 5hrs of sleep last night, but nothing beats sleeping in your own bed. Think I picked up a head cold some too. Got some congestion that I cannot shake. Good times.

Does a static tire have any traction? No. Why? Because tractive force is the amount of force required for overcoming the friction of when two bodies slide or roll on each other. That force is what propels you forward. So, there is no traction in a static wheel. Torque must be applied.

So, say a vehicle produces 400 units of torque (take your pick of imperial or metric, it doesn't matter), and it is putting that torque to two wheels. For super simple explanation, lets say that on good surfaces all the torque is used equally between the 2 drive wheels. Each gets 200, for a total of 400.

Now, lets say it's a slick or loose surface, and if the full 400 torque is applied the wheels start to slip. They are losing traction. Let's say only 200 torque can be used without slipping. Well, you have half the traction at this point, because you are not able to apply the full torque, and instead each wheel is getting 100 torque for the total of 200, and the other 200 units of torque are not utilized.

Now in that slick scenario we have established let's add two more drive wheels by engaging 4x4. Well now, each wheel gets the 100 torque that can be applied, and the full 400 torque available are used to generate tractive force. This is a direct increase in traction.

Yes, there are a million variables that come into play that make these simple numbers fluctuate, but the base principle remains unchanged. The best you can argue is that 2WD produces equal traction so long as maximum torque doesn't cause a wheel to slip. In that scenario 4wd would just redistribute the traction. In slippery stuff, you will have more traction, though.

Alright, I went through as much school as the next guy and I have never heard that definition of traction so, fair enough. In that case, 4x4 would in fact give you traction based on available friction at each wheel.

My only counter to that would be that if you polled the vast majority of the public most people would believe, just like me till just now, that traction, friction, and grip are all synonymous when talking about driving and wheels on the ground. So my other point in even starting the conversation is still valid, Joe Smoe off the street is probably confused when told he has more traction in 4x4 but can't stop any faster.

Truck is just under 10k mi, slight shudder at 60 mph, not accelerating well and not shifting well. Check engine light is on and info on radio says some type of electronics issue with trans. I reeeeeally don't wanna drop off my truck to a dealer for anything serious.

Can you see what codes are being thrown (full system check not just CEL/common dash lights)...

When my '08 starting having an issue w/a shift solenoid, this is how it started off; then full limp mode and not getting out of 4th.. but shift was weird in all gears... I ended up replacing solenoid and was good for a month or so, then the problem came back; ended up being one of the connector pins in the harness.

It is my understanding that water, salt and corrosion can happen to the harness on the outside of the trans, but it seems early for that w/your rig (but who knows)...

Either way, I can appreciate your desire to not use the dealer... However, I have not heard of a case where the warranty work can be performed by a non-toyota dealer aside from 3rd party warranties, and the last thing you want to do is not be covered in the future by having someone else work on it and not take advantage of the warranty period... Just my thoughts!
