The forecasted cold front here got postponed today. Three 90+ April days in a row. But now it's scheduled for tonight. Friday night we're seeing Old Crow outside. S'posed to be 53. Hoody weather, and gloves if the beer is cold.

I do find it comical that you made an attempt to use “non-ordinary” verbiage on this post to sound more educated. :fistbump:

When I was working as a project manager/process designer, I wished I remembered my engineering economics, process design and electrical engineering courses better. When I was working as a process engineer for a very corrosive unit, I wished I remembered my materials engineering course (among others) better.

    Too many, but not enough....
Fair, but it's also faster to use 1 word instead of 5 to say the same thing.

I too 100% agree with this. I did mechanical engineering and while I don’t use my degree on a daily basis I know how to quickly search and find the right answer or know which formula to use, etc…. Not that I wouldn’t have learned those through experience but in the engineering arena I can get there a lot faster right out of school.

I believe that problem solving is one of the most important skills no matter what you do. I do wear lots of hats and the problems vary day to day, including people problems, but knowing how to navigate them is important. I will also say some of what I know today is not based on what I learned in college but also experience.

I also don’t think I would have the same outlook since I was fortunate enough that I got through college without debt. I love what I do and would be hard to get my foot in the door like others have said. Conversely I know there are plenty of other career paths that I would have been successful at, happy, and would be doing just as good without a degree. I don’t bash or favor either direction and trying to instill that into my kids when it is time for them to make a decision. I don’t want them to feel like they have to go to college just because mommy and daddy did.

Now that I have a daughter, I spend more time thinking about what I might be able to do to make STEM careers more accessible to women. Not that I think she has to work in that field but I want the opportunity to be there for her if she wants it.

A group over the wall in the next row of cubicles is apparently excited to be back in the office. They are on fire this morning. There are 6-8 people and only one lady. Just heard her say “how about I pee in a cup and leave it on your desk?”

Hahahaha… going to be a good day

Today is Admin Professional Day. I had our home office (who are all technically admins?) pick-out whatever they want for lunch. They chose Jimmy Johns so I have it being delivered to them. Always take care of your employees! (even though technically these ones do not report to me, I communicate with all of them as they support our needs when I need something)

    The Dirty T ( ^_^)_且

After retiring from the Post Office, I took my current low level job at the state of AZ which is basically an admin job.

And you didn't buy me lunch, now my feelers are hurt. :(

I should have ordered something for me. I was IT again today after an email was hacked. Had to add email limits, and additional security measures in place. They didn’t ask me, but I work with IT quite a bit for onboarding managers, equipment, off boarding employees, planned terms, etc

You know what's funny is the 2022 trail edition Tacoma is like a properly functional edition meanwhile the trail edition Tundra I had got ever so slightly different colored seat stitching, different Wheels, the bed boxes, and some body colored bumper parts with a chrome grill from a different trim level.

I think that it depends some on what you are trying to get out of them and some it is proving you’re capable of learning and applying abstract principals.

The theory and principals behind how things work is what I got out of my schooling. The practical application of actually doing a top-to-bottom building design is something that is better and more practically picked up on the job. But that is also why an engineer must first get their bachelor’s, then pass the EIT, then spend five years working under a registered professional engineer, then pass the professional licensure exam in any states they wish to be licensed to practice in. All the while they don’t make shit compared to the contractors that are taking their design and making it buildable. :D mind you, I went through a fairly intense structural engineering school (with no intent to ever practice), and I was paying my own way so I wasn’t going to just party and fuck off - I busted ass (even did 23 credits each of my last three terms).

I will agree that with five solid years of experience in most fields, whether you do or do not have a degree is pretty moot. If you are a good learner and can apply reasonable deduction with a decent level of proficiency, then you’ll have equivalent capacity (or more) to someone that has a degree in the same field. I don’t hire based on a degree but I do look at it and use it as a thermometer (one of many) to gage commitment to a longer term goal.
