    Welcome from south florida.
I hate to bash nissan, I grew up tinkering on plenty of nissans. Unfortunately there reliability has gone down the Ford road over the past 20 or so years. That CVT was the biggest mistake they made, my buddy is a master tech at a nissan dealership and the CVT tranny swap is his main job over the last few years. Good news is the titan has a traditional trans and it seems to hold up well, but diff issues are common.

When I bought my tundra last year I was on the fence between the two. That alison, cummins duo should be the most reliable set up of all time. Deciding factor for me was the reliability of the tundra couldn't make justice of skipping by it to pay the maintenance on a diesel

I honestly don't understand how an auto manufacturer can have differential issues in this day and age. In my opinion if a manufacturer is having issues with a mechanical device that has been around for decades, then their quality must suck.

    I know why.

    $$$$$$$

CEO “so we can make this part 15% weaker/cheaper and it will still hold up?”

Engineer “well it will probably hold up past warranty...”

    CEO “sign me up”

Welcome OP. Wanted to add that the Tundras forum is a real nice place too. I don't see anyone bashing anyone, just a bunch folks enjoying and learning about their awesome trucks.

    I've had both a '05 and '17 Titan.

I traded the '17 Titan for a 2021 Tundra primarily because of 3 issues and Nissan's laid back approach to customer issues:

1.) 7 Speed transmission oddball shifting issues. Several firmware updates later and the sifting issues continued. Nissan apparently gave up on the 7 speed and concentrated on the new 9 speed.
2.) Engine knock. Early on Nissan replaced the long block. Now they only replace the short block. Not cool if Billy Ray is your mechanic as you are at the mercy of his skills. Even Ford has replaced the 5.0 long block.
3.) Heated seats. Sometimes they worked, most of the time they didn't. Dealer said they worked as designed. Most people disagreed.

The Titan Forums can be an unhappy place...the Tundra Forum is the polar opposite.

I agree but unfortunately just about every manufacturer has random issues with various parts of the vehicle. Toyota had a run of melting interior panels on multiple Toyota and Lexus models, and don't forget the rusting frames.

Honestly, this right here, I feel, is why a lot of people are here. A perfect example was the media system in my '13 F150. IT WAS *CRAP.* It was the 4.2" screen; and if one knows anything about Fords and media systems from that time, you know that's the WORST system they've designed. Not only did it run on substandard *and* hardware, it froze up ALL the time....and if you wanted to upgrade it, you essentially had two options:

    - buy aftermarket radio, steering wheel controls, *and* aftermarket dash kit (as the 4.2" screen/dash/HVAC was all built together). The aftermarket dash kit was itself crap. This would run you at least about $1K.
    - buy a reverse-engineered Sync 3.0 system from a later model year...and that cost $2K at the time (now it's down to an affordable $1500).

This is why, in comparison, the VERY occasional OEM media system hiccup is no big deal - I can easily and quickly reset the system, and if I want to, I can fairly easily replace the HU. :)

But that was just one thing. Seat rail squeaked; mileage sank like a stone (went from like 17 to 15 MPG - and that was with me driving like I had Miss Daisy in the backseat later on), and in sub-freezing weather the left rear door latch wouldn't work - and in SuperCab, that is a HUGE deal, because the rear door *is* the pillar upon which the front door latches.

So yeah...I don't care if MPG is kinda crap with the Tundra. The whole truck is *FAR* better than my old truck was, and that's taking everything into consideration. :)

So my dilemma is that I was looking at a new Titan XD Pro4x, mainly because I need more payload. With 3 growing kids and towing a travel trailer, the 1300 lbs of payload in the Tundra is just not enough. So I thought a Titan XD (gasser) with about 1900 lbs payload was a more reliable choice than a domestic.

I already run a WDH for the travel trailer and am not interested in adding airbags or rear leafs so I think Tundra is not an option. Love to hear more from those that owned Titan XD's.

From what I understand, the xd would be between a 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton. It's heavy and has a total disregard for fuel cost but that weight makes towing a better experience since the truck doesn't get tossed around as much on the highway.

My Titan HD with gas engine got equivalent mileage to my stock tundra and better than how my Tundra sits now. Gas mileage is poor either way. I am on the reliability train now tho...

2017. The parking brake would drag and squeal. They fixed it multiple times and it would come back in a few hundred miles. The final time, they replaced the entire axle. Lasted about 700 miles and came back. They flew out a technician from across the country to no avail. I asked them to buy it back and they didn't even fight me on it. I visited the Toyota dealer and bought a Tundra. I was exhausted. I bet I took that truck in 10 times. I was busy at work and the dealer was almost an hour from me. I just wanted the most reliable truck I could get. So, back to a Tundra I went!

Thanks for the feedback. That was not an issue that I read about in any Titan forums.

Welcome. I chose Tundra in 2018, as I like reliability. I spent most of my life in development of testing and dimensional inspection. I believe Toyota has one of best QC implementation. I’ve only got 28K miles, but no problems except for a couple of recalls. One recall I did myself as it was the turn signal needed a pin switched in the harness for the parking lights in front brightness. One hazard of owning a reliable vehicle is assuming all vehicles are better now. Not true…. Anyways, I like reliability over folding tailgate that I probably would not use…. I kinda like the old tech of the V8 also.

The last truck I owned before the Tundra was a Titan. The thing was a towing beast. You wouldn’t even know my 7k lb trailer was back there. Definitely towed better than my Tundra, though adding the TRD sway bar definitely made a major improvement.

the other thing I really liked was their tie down system in the bed…2 rails were in the bottom of the bed which was very helpful with some loads… I miss that. What I don’t miss was a leaking Diff that they could never properly fix, door hardware constantly breaking (I replaced 3 window regulators, window mirror control switches breaking so often I bought spares (anyone need one?) etc. A sagging headliner, etc.

    Love my Tundra.

Which means you loose the factory reliability this creating the circle of more mods.
