I've been a Toyota owner since 1984, I just bought my first Toyota truck 2017 tundra 4x4 crew max, with a tow package and a 5.7 v8 engine, short bed. I bought it to tow the trailer we are getting next week 32' 5,690 pounds dry weight, 7,800 pounds gvw. I've already bought a weight distribution hitch with sway control since the tundra isn't rated to handle the numbers of my trailer and now it looks like the trailer brake controller system won't do the job either. I called Toyota customer service and they told me they have no records of any complaints about this situation. My suggestion is that anyone that has experienced this problem they need to call and complain or Toyota will never do anything they need to do to fix it.

Why wont the TBCS work and if the Tundra is not rated to tow your trailer why did you make the purchase?
I have a 17 and will be towing my trailer in April for the first time and curious why the TBCS will not work?
I am pretty sure the Tundra is rated to tow 10K or in that area.
    Thanks.

I am confused now, I thought our CM 5.7's with tow package were rated to tow around 9,500 lbs. So why is this guy sayin' his truck isn't rated for it. As long as his gross weight is below his max tow capability he should be fine, no??

Need to also consider tongue weight and load in bed and weight of passengers.

I was talking load capacity of truck. Most 1/2 tons are around 1500 lbs.

What exactly is this problem you called Toyota about? You state your camper is 5,700 lbs. dry weight, I follow that.

Then you mention 7,800lbs. gvw. You've lost me. Your Tundra and camper gvw is much higher than 7,800lbs. but why is that even an issue?

Your Tundra crewmax & 32 foot camper would be 11,000 to 11,500 gvw depending on gas in your tank and what is in the truck bed / camper.

Yeah, He didn't respond to anyone's comments on that thread either. Seems like OP is just trying to stir things up.

Not sure if his words are confusing, but he stated he bought a WD hitch and sway control since the truck is not rated to tow his trailer. Only thing I can think of he is referring to, is the rating on the truck hitch w/o WD hitch. Without the WD witch, then yes his truck is not rated for that trailer. His comment about the brake controller and call to Toyota is probably referencing the issues guys were having with the OEM brake controller. Swap it out for a aftermarket if that's the case. I just walked in on this one and didn't realize he had posted the same issues on another post. Hope this helps him clear things up.

To all of your Replies I hope I replied to all individually. The problem is Toyota has no record of any problems with the tbc not working on tundras. I'm not a troll I had to get off the site for a bit. I'm also trying to make sure when I go out to Ohio next sat to get my trailer I'll have brakes to tow it back.

Let me know how your experiences are with them if you did.

    Thanks.

Awesome. Glad to hear. My next toyhauler is coming from them. The price difference from Ohio and Colorado is over $10,000.00. You can bet your bottom dollar my goofy ass will drive out there for that kind of savings.

It is Steve. I was totally shocked.

One of my Navy buddies turned me on to them. He purchased a huge Keystone 5th wheel and saved 16K. He had it delivered to Kansas to his families place for 2200.00. So he still saved 13000.00 with fuel and delivery.

Let us know what you find with your controller situation. From the 5 or 6 other threads I am aware of on this forum and others, I know Toyota has had a lot of formal complaints regarding this issue. I'm not aware if Toyota has acknowledged any problem exists. Congrats on your trailer.

Thanks Gosolo. When I called toyotas C/S number they told me they had no records of any complaints about tundras tbc not working. That's why I posted what I did originally so that anyone that may have an issue with the tbc they need to actually take the vehicle to a dealer and have it documented that way Toyota can not say there's no record.

To anyone I may have offended with my posts or by not replying to everyone else's reply'. I'm not a troll or trying to start any trouble. I'm a retired mechanic that worked for our local transit company in philly for over 31 yrs. I know how repair vehicles and I know how to tow I used to tow 40'&60' buses. I also drove tractor trailers for 10 yrs. I know my truck can tow my trailer. What I'm trying to make sure of is that the tbc on the tundras work. I've been reading lots of negative feed back on tundras.com and tundratalk.net about the tbc not working. I want to be certain that when I hook my truck to the trailer I'll have trailer brakes.

Corporate cover ups to save $ aren't new. Just disappointing coming from Toyota since we're all drinking the koolaid.
The big problem with this issue is that there doesn't seem to be consensus about what the problem is and so Toyota has "plausible deniability " my.02

Well gosolo as I told ColoradoTJ tomorrow I'm hooking up to my neighbors trailer to set my tbc up on my truck this way I'll know for sure where I stand with it. If it doesn't work of course it goes to the dealer but if need be I buy the P3 unit and install it

I'm not sure if there is a problem with it not working, just some issues dialing it in. I can't say for sure as my truck didn't come with that option and I have the P3. The P3 is a great unit in my opinion. Hope everything goes well with the tow back with the new trailer, and please post pics when you can Ralph. Good luck with all.

I think people (or at least I) were reacting to the confusing wording of your initial post, the fact that you posted it twice, and that you weren't responding to anyone who was trying to help get it sorted out.

In any case, glad to have you back in the conversation.

From what I have read, the Tundra TBC needs to be cranked up way more than you would expect. So if on the P3 you used 6.5 on the gain, the Tundra would be like 9.5.

My GMC TBC runs about .5-1 more on the gain than my P3.
