Canadian dollars are different aren't they? Maybe the pound is too. Yeah, that's my story. :hattip:

So almost 1000# over pay load, no big deal! If they got into a good crosswind, good luck to them!

I can also remember small, “lightweight” 5th wheel trailers, one brand made locally, that didn’t work over a ‘90’s F150. No slide-outs, no A/C maybe 20’ overall… I have no idea on weights, but the one an old neighbour had I’d guess at 4000-4500 lbs.

A far cry from most of the behemoth 5’ers on the market today.

I usually try to distract the wife really quickly when she sees one of those triple axle fifth wheels that are bigger than our house and starts drooling.

This 2014 Double Cab SR5 was totaled, and the current owner repaired it after getting it cheap; The truck has a rebuilt title, but you would never guess by looking at it, and it has only 60K miles!

…with zero tongue weight on the rear of the Tundra. That is what hamstrings the Tundra and most other half tons out there when it comes to heavy trailers.

    Good Lord.

In the past year I have seen two Ram 1500 trucks with the air suspension that failed with rather large trailers hooked to them without LDH’s. The rear bumpers were almost on the ground. Looked pretty scary.

Wow. I can only imagine what that is like to tow.

They have airbags or something on the rear suspension to help with the pin weight. So if that is the trailer that was posted by another member, 2180 lbs and the 11280 lbs is unloaded vehicle weight. That’s 19.4% pin weight.

Even scarier is what that trailer is rated for at 15880 lbs. that would put his pin weight at over 3000 lbs.

I did some testing with my truck and when I have exactly 3000 lbs in the bed I’m just barely into the overload springs. This is where I have to start being careful. I can only go another 600 lbs + myself to be at max capacity.

This load I actually had to move the hitch up one position up to level up the trailer. This also the day I said my next trailer will have hydraulic jacks. I also called myself a moron for 80 miles coming out of the mountains in a flippen blizzard at -7*F (by the time I got home it was -14).
I had just started getting into the overloads so I was around 3000 lbs pin weight. Trailer was pretty heavy. This was my wife’s Valentine’s Day gift. 13873B61-B530-46B9-927F-2C8DB6773BC8.jpg

As I promised myself, my next trailer would be more heavy duty and have hydraulic jacks. This load, I was at max capacity. Pin weight was around 3550 lbs or so.

    B30FA8D5-F8BC-41EE-ADD2-ABB0AA66141B.jpg

What a lot of people don’t even consider since they install LR E tires is running out of capacity. I can only go over my maximum pin weight of 3808 lbs by 100 lbs before I run out of tire capacity. Now if I step up to a 275/70/18 I would have a lot more tire capacity for the added safety factor (and probably will on my next set).

Must be the case since the Honda Element had a towing capacity of 1,500 lbs in the US but 1,500 KG in Australia.

They’ve got the engine for it. The iForce max has better HP/torque numbers than every gasser HD truck on the market. I’d like to think they’re one step closer to a 1T truck, but it’s hard to be hopeful at all.

And what speed do I need to achieve for liftoff?

I look at this thread and it made me think. Currently running "empty" with a few items in the bed I have about 2,700lb on the rear axle. In theory I can put up to 4150lb on the axle. Make room for some stuff in the truck and I figure you could pull a fifth wheel if you keep the pin weight below say 1200lb.
There are few out there that might qualify.
    upload_2022-6-22_12-29-33.jpg

IMO, all of these are all too big but the numbers might work.
Granted you will probably want airbags or SumoSprings before you go down this road.

Now, this would be very Tunda toe-able and might be a great little unit.....

So I met this guy with a 2014 AC at the GM Nationals a week ago; His truck did not have a 5th wheel, but it did have aftermarket air suspension, and he seemed to think that a Tundra with air suspension could handle a 5th wheel...? I dunno; I personally would not pull a trailer that big with a half-ton truck...

There’s a lot more that goes into towing a 5th wheel other than air suspension. Suspension is a big part, but so is axle ratings, power train, brakes and alternate braking systems, etc.

But a Tundra could be beefed up to haul a really large trailer without, say, replacing the rear diff or regearing it?

The payload ratings are what they are. Some get lucky going over, others do not. We have had some rear axles that were destroyed on here. Let’s be honest, most people don’t come on here and brag that they went way over, broke stuff so everyone can say…”I told you so.”
