I'm not defending Toyota, just looking at data to see if there is a pricing problem. If the price goes up too much it impedes demand. Not happening.

The forum story arc on the Gen3 has been they won't sell because they left the simplicity and utility of Gen2.5 behind. Then, nobody would buy one because of the grill. Then the recall would crush sales. Many said the model should be dropped, it was too tainted to recover. And the price, people can't afford to buy them. There's been some existential threat since they were announced. Somehow people are buying them in much greater volumes. Probably because people like the truck and pricing better than the alternatives.

I'd also add that just because there's a bunch on the lot doesn't mean they aren't selling. You'd have to go back day after day to check the inventory to see if it changes or not.

My new neighbor bought one a few weeks ago. I made some small talk about him copying my color before I asked if he had any concerns with the engine… he didn’t know anything about it.
He did lament about he’s only getting 15 mpg though.
I suspect most buyers are similar.

Guy buys a new truck and you tease him for a copycat color. Then, you enlighten him on potential engine problem? Nice guy.

better have a talk with Chevy, Dodge, and ford, then! We see blown engines locally sub-100k miles for those trucks all the time. Sounds like you’re calling out Toyota, which is fine, love any push for better quality. But it’s a complete fantasy to think that any truck has zero blown engines, that has never existed and never will

Haha, I wasn’t mean, was complimentary on how great his color was. ;-)
I had a plan on asking about the engine. When it was obvious he didn’t know, I simply said ‘it was only early 22’s and 23’s’. I don’t think he gave it another thought.

IMO $12K plus in discounts on Tundras won’t be seen again once Toyota works out the engine woes. Toyota is playing the domestic game right now, by offering huge discounts to keep the product moving and maybe grabbing a little extra market share. It’s fine and all, but as someone who has owned GMs, this sales model kicks resale values in the teeth. It really impacts leasing companies and early 3rd gen adopters the most with much lower residual values and trade in values. And once Toyota shaves $12K off a 2025 purchase, there’s enormous downward pressure on trade in and resale values of 22s, 23s and 24s, which if we are being honest, already face some pretty stiff headwinds in the used market with the recall. Hopefully the motor issue is resolved and becomes just a footnote, then I can try to scoop up a deal. Lol

I pass by 2 times a day the lots of all three i mentioned are packed with trucks. Simple math says 90 percent of these trucks are at or close to a 1k payment per month

I also suspected that Toyota's goal with the Tundra was to displace Ram as the #3 truck in the US. With the recent pricing and management of that company, they may very well be picking up prior Ram buyers. They also may be gaining past Titan buyers with the end of that line from Nissan. Will be interesting to see if the merger with Honda changes the Ridgeline/Titan dynamics going forward.

I spent $55k on my 22’ just this month knowing all well the recall issue & that I’ll get a new long block. To each their own, some will call me a fool for paying that much or whatever.
I made an educated choice to buy this over a new one or any other brand. Some will say wait till it breaks down, then watch the misery. Okay I will and I won’t be miserable for long if at all. Stranded on the side of the interstate sucks, I’ve done it too many times, long before cell phones existed, having to walk to the next exit or thumb a ride. It’ll build character for you and whoever is with you.
I’ve got probably half a million seat miles in Toyota’s & Toyota has always come through. I’ve got a 2015 Camry that’s getting a new paint job for free, sometime between now & July before it turns 10 years old, because they stepped up & recognized the defect in their primer.

    https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova...ed under 'unprecedented',as far back as 2008.

Yes we dropped a lot of money on these trucks knowing damn well their values go down & that we hope to keep them for plenty years of reliable service, but Jesus Christ unreasonable expectations in resale values is what many of your problems are. Don’t make financial decisions on speculative data. Remember past returns don’t guarantee future results. Wishful thinking is what too many on here suffer from. This isn’t a fairy tale, but shit getting a new engine for free is a pretty good fairy tale ending.

Everyone concerned with other years that aren’t covered and feel they should be, sounds like you might need to take very meticulous care of yours just like you should’ve been doing all along.

    Hot take for sure.

Being stranded on the side of the road by a newish $80K truck and seeing it as a positive character building experience is next level marketing. I can see the Super Bowl ad now: fans walking from the interstate breakdown lane to the dealer with their coolers and grills in tow. Then, they’ll fit themselves and all that gear in the Corolla loaner and get to the tailgate parking lot. On the TV screen: “We’re Toyota, and it’s time to reset your expectations.”

You’re right again here: the value of all trucks do go down / depreciate. Why worry about trade in / resale / residual values anyway? Just accept the hit, and be happy the days of those pesky 90% plus residuals are behind us. Remember: “We’re Toyota, it’s time to reset your expectations.”

Yep, that fairy tale ending of a new motor. While I personally wouldn’t want every hose, harness, bolt, clip, etc disconnected on my newish $80K truck by a dealer tech, some will. Ive heard all the automation and robotics in those billon dollar manufacturing facilities can be easily replicated in a service bay with just a box of Snap On tools anyway. Nothing to worry about. And if your second motor grenades, you’ll get to find out who pays for the third motor. “We’re Toyota, it’s time to reset your expectations.”

Quality concerns or not, Toyota is still the best manufacture of the major builders. I still drive my 2000 Tundra, never a problem. My daily driver is a 2016 Corolla which will be sold to a son soon. 2025 Corolla is my next buy. My 2024 Tundra is 55% USA made. More than many of the others.

My job is mostly Fords. We also buy Chevy and Dodge. Ford for sure gives the best rebates to fleet. When it comes to compare, we have lots of Nissans, some Prius and compact Fords. We just pick up 3 Ford Mavericks for our location.

Toyota has 10.7% of the US pickup market and only sells half ton trucks? That's impressive.

Sorry for the confusion. IIRC, the 10.7% market share is only for 1/2 ton pickups.

Actually in July, tundra was at 15.3%. Dodge actually fell to 5th place at below 10%. Now have those figures changed as of today I don't know but I doubt it.

That 15.3% was from April 2024.

https://www.spglobal.com/mobility/e...icates, Tundra's,when the new version arrived.

The article I quoted 10.7% was more recent, but I can't seem to find it now, unfortunately.

My point remains, however. While the Tundra has certainly increased its market share, it's still only in 4th place, and they are miles behind Ford. I'm guessing when this engine issue becomes more common knowledge, as I suspect it will shortly, Tundra sales are going to take a hit. I could be wrong...

My article was from July. I could find anything recent from a quick search. At least Toyota surpassed Dodge, considering their crisis right now. Forget reaching Ford and GM numbers. Even in 07 when it came out, it was way ahead of them and still didn't matter.
