Same thing with Colorado/Canyon presales. Lots of hype at first. Folks that had Rangers, miss Rangers, and simply intrigued will buy first. Curious to see second year sales.

I bought my Tundra, new, in January. It was the truck that I wanted. I got financed at 1.9%. No Chevy, Ford, or Chryslers, for me.

From people I talk to, very few are buying brand new trucks anymore unless they make $100K+ per year, their company pays for it or they're financially illiterate. The average middle class joe simply can't afford a new truck anymore. I work with people who make $70K - $90K per year. Only a couple have new trucks, and they're the ones who are always whining about being broke.

$50K for a truck is way too high. In 2011, I bought a brand new GMC Sierra crew cab. 4x4, Z71 Off Road package, All Terrain package, Tow package, 5.3L V8...basically every option except leather, sunroof and Bose stereo. I paid $38,900 out the door. 2 years ago before I bought my Tundra, I brought they build and sales sheet for that Sierra back to the GM dealer I bought it from. I asked them what an equivalent 2016 or 2017 would run. No matter what they did, they couldn't get below $47K out the door.

As much as I'd love to buy a new Tundra, it's likely never going to happen. I'll be hanging onto my 1st Gen for a long while, then buying a 5+ year old Tundra to replace it. Even then, I'll be paying over $30K...

Something will have to give in the truck market eventually. Prices are out of control.

I agree. Trucks prices are absolutely ridiculous. I however don’t believe anything will give. To many people willing to pay the price whether they can afford it or not.
My aunt just bought an Expedition. 76,000 or something like that. I overheard that her payment was over a grand! I mean WTF???
My 2017 Limited is paid off. I plan to run this thing for a long time..

the banks and the auto companies will just continue to collude on pricing. Longer loans and higher prices. The young these days have been conditioned to the idea of a car payment

Most of this is very true, car prices are getting insane. That said I still only buy new, to many people do not take care of there vehicles and I keep mine a long time so I would just rather have it from the start. I don't make 100k+ and I was able to do it, but I also just have an sr5 model and got a good deal and a good interest rate since my credit is really good. Now if your going for higher end models then I'm out lol. My biggest complaint on buying a new truck, especially a Toyota is my local govt absolutely rakes me over the coals with taxes on it, 1k a year just to "own" my Tundra. Still paying $350yr on my Tacoma, this is the disadvantage of high resale and its money I will not see a return on. Highway robbery.

The explanation I heard is that a lot of business folks that drove luxury cars are getting tired of the lack of reliability and maintenance that has to be done at the dealerships. Therefore, they’re going and buying high trim level trucks that are much more reliable and easier to maintain, but yet they don’t ever need a truck. The rest of us that actually need a truck are stuck getting the lower trims because that’s all that’s affordable unless you make 6 figures. A 2003 king ranch f250 was $42k brand new ordered from the factory. That truck is now around $65-70k.

Interesting thoughts and opines. Yes we witnessed a mediocre month post xmas, but consider how additional economic factors that could have played a role or impacted sales results. Tundra has been tried tested and proven successful brand year after year. We can trust wiser business, engineering and marketing experts and leaders who know when and how far along they should carry their brand. Not straying too far in the weeds on the conversation, consider the resale market. The big picture of all other market indicators .. housing, spending in general imho and vehicle sales will all eventually balance out or rebound and keep pace. We should only expect pricing to increase and keep pace along with all other products. The broader consumer base is wise enough to know when and what to purchase or if necessary when to wait. Not an impulsive shopper, I personally shopped a truck for approximately 1 year keeping the wallet close and tight. Night and day comparison but before pulling trigger on a Tundra, I was influenced for some time by the S Denali bells and whistles. I had a serious reality check after visiting car lots and found how many unsold GM/big 3 vehicles are sitting on the lot. Yes quite attractive but with limited resources my decision was the $66-73K GMC otd cost I thought over the top for upgraded trucks with not enough track record, current sales or customer satisfaction level records. We have yet to discover how plant shutdowns will impact quality and productivity levels down the road. Did my homework and am happy with my decision on the 3rd Gen and believe our 1st and 2nd Gen brothers and sisters will agree our investments on the V8’s will have wider chance to become sought after in 10-20 years. Not knocking the potential V6, hybrid or autonomous alternatives I think today’s technology will be appreciated for time to come.

I bought a leftover 17 in April of 18 out the door for just over 20K after trading in my 07. 14K trade in on the 07 and got them down to 30 on the 17. Drove off the lot with 98 miles on the truck. Granted it was a base SR5, but you can get them well under if you don't need the gadgets.

If a guy wants a Ram, oh well so be it. I hate Dodge. My neighbors have one, and it looks and compares like Crap next to my Tundra. I'm loyal to Toyota. They have been good to me.

A little of this and a little of that.

And they're doing a great job about keeping the average truck consumer stupid.

I have. With a factory rate of 3% to boot.

I came over from a diesel truck because I was not going to pay 70+k to replace what I had in my 2007 Duramax. I paid 43 for that truck in 2007, the same truck now would have cost me over 70G. My income has not increased at the same level over the last 12 years to justify paying that much more for a truck. I looked at all the new gassers, GMC,DODGE, FORD, NISSAN, they were all insanely expensive save for the Nissan. Yes they had more creature comforts and more luxury than the Tundra but at the price point Toyota sits they cant be beat for what they offer. Its my first Toyota since the early 1990's, I will be keeping it at least 7 more years, I expect it will end up being a good value.

    Not nearly enough room here!
Now there's a word some people don't take into consideration these days.....Value. My Mechanic can't sell me service /products for the same price as Wall Mart but I trust him and his work with anything I have. It's my opinion that price and value are usually, two completely different animals.

Of course the price numbers are going up. Inflation alone gets your $38900 to ~ $44000 in 2017.

Yeah, I get that. Inflation has gone up. Taxes have gone up. Cost of living has gone up. Wages haven't gone up though. Very few people I know have had their incomes keep up with the rising cost of living in Canada.

$44K for a brand new truck sounds about right. But the $47K I was quoted for the Sierra was after about $15K in sales discounts and them rolling all their dealer fees into the deal since I was a return customer, so the MSRP + dealer fees would have put that truck near $60K.

All sales are down across the board, not just Tundra, not just Toyota. H-D has had it's worst quarter in many many years (Due to their target market literally dying and not realizing that younger people want value/dollar). Real Estate is slowing down, new home building is going down, retail confidence is slipping fast as is appetite for retail credit. I'm starting to see lay-offs across a few business segments starting Q1. It's going to be a rocky ride here soon.

To an earlier point, it's only going to get worse before it gets better, anyone that tools up right now for a new product would be pissing in the wind. The smart money is going to be holding steady for the next couple of years to see what shakes out.

Getting back to the subject of the new Ranger, I have no doubt that it will take back it's position at the top of the midsized truck market. The new Tacoma sucks in the powertrain department, and there are a lot of people (like me before I bought my Tundra) who were begging for a new Ranger. If I sell my Tundra, I'll likely make my way into a new Ranger.
