Can you share a bit more info?

    1. Is it OEM or aftermarket?
    2. If it is aftermarket, what brand is it? Often posting a pic of the remote you use to start the truck helps.
    3. Does it try to start and fail?
    4. Does everything else on the remote work?

    And welcome to the community!

So do the 2016s require an active Connected Services account to run remote start? It appears the newer models do, not sure its an option on the older models.

No connected services to start for that year. By looking at that key fob I have no clue how one could remote start with that?

For that year, Toyota does sell a remote start accessory and I believe it comes with a separate key fob that is installed by dealers?

Maybe the OP can tell us the button sequence he uses to start the truck with that fob?

    Thanks.

How do you normally start the engine with the remote? Is it press lock twice and then press/hold on the third until it starts?

That is correct. Two lock and third hold. Worked when I first got it but not now?

just doing process of elimination here... are all the doors closed and the hood closed before trying to engage the remote start?

have you installed anything lately that required tapping into fuses? check fuses etc

This is the installation manual for what I think you have: http://toyotaparts.sparkstoyota.com/install/PT398-34150inst.pdf

    I would suggest:

    1. Try a different remote if you have one.
    2. Check all of your connections to the hood switch. If the computer senses the hood is open it won't start the truck.
    3. Identify if your truck has an immobilizer or not (it's in the install guide)
    4. Re-pair your remotes - starts at page 24 but make sure you pick the right one (immobilizer equipped or not)

Or LEDs. Some can create interference.

oh totally forgot about that! some LEDs will create interference. Found that out the hard way when i replaced my garage door opener light with LED...basically locked myself out of the house...

Usually bad LEDs prevent the entire remote from working and not just the starter.

Typically yes. Its possible to only block a subset of the commands as well.

Also maybe hook it up to a laptop and check the remote start system status in Techstream.

I'm confused... The remote runs on one frequency set so I assumed all commands would be blocked. Commands don't run on different RF.

Honestly, the OP needs to pull the under dash to see what it is. It very well might not be factory even though he is using the factory remote. DEI, compustar and many other companies have rs that you can use the factory fob. There is an immobilizer in the vehicle and his key is coded ( either a G or H key ) so you can actually program the immobilizer interface needed ( for aftermarket rs and/or security ) as a stand alone rs. Pulling the under dash will explain what needs to be done in the sense of troubleshooting. Otherwise, it’s just a guessing game.

This ^^ I had one in my 2017 that was the Fortin Evo One and it used the factory remote. Find the box under the dash, usually connected to the steering column key switch and report back.

Depends on how the commands are embedded on the signal with this remote system.

Awesome. @Do58 reinforces an important point above and I want to make sure you see it. You really need to know exactly what system you have installed. It's likely the one I provided the link to above if it's OEM, but confirming is key.

Yep the Fortin Evo One in my 2017 from Tech12Volts used factory fob and required lock press 3x, no long hold dance. The only reason that one wouldn't start and wouldn't beep would be hood safety switch not closed.

No that is the correct key for factory remote start. I hit my lock button 3 times quickly holding it on the third until it beeps on more time. All doors must be shut properly for it to work akso.

Not being evasive with you @mountainpete I can't say with certainty this is how the Tundra key remote embeds its command info on the RF signal. Some remotes use a header/preamble (wake up/listen command) followed by a command (ie lock, unlock, alarm). There is usually some type of security scheme embedded in the signal to prevent spoofing/recording; these can vary greatly from one manufacturer to another.

Basic, less secure remotes would frequency modulate the base RF with a different signal per command. These typically can be spoofed/recorded.

This video is an example where you can see the remote's transmission on a spectrum analyzer and the frequency is shifting. The other command is using a higher portion of the band (presumably after its mixed with the base RF signal). Relevant part is at 4:44.

    https://youtu.be/RiAJbCnGzZs?t=284

In this example it would be possible that interference blocks one command but not the other. There is enough separation between the two command to do so.

Here is a deeper dive in one approach to security for key remotes:
