It's caused me to do a lot of additional research, so it's been very helpful to me.

I don't mean to be that guy, but you don't actually have to read it. There are thousands of threads on this site that I've never even opened!

I would second these as well. Just reading some of the cool tech the GMC has some of that would worry me as part of ownership; in or out of warranty. The cylinder deactivation or core engine would be a big determining factor to go with the GMC. I had similar thoughts on the turbo charged Ecoboost with my experience with turbo aspirated engines. Some of the other tech is really cool as well but personally it would bother me more having an option I can’t use than not having the option at all.

I have not owned a GMC product personally so can’t provide anything meaningful there but felt I would add things that I would consider in your situation.

**I guess I missed it but it looks like you went the GMC route. Which is great; honestly when it all boils down to it; enjoying what you drive is probably the most important thing. :burnrubber:

I find it hard to believe on the resale of the 2012 but can’t challenge on the research if it says what it says on comparable vehicles. My dad and I have sold several Toyota’s with over 250k on them over the years and have always been shocked at how much we have gotten for them (4x4, 4Runner, Tundra, T100). We couldn’t give away his Scottsdale and my Blazer and my brother got very little for his 2002 1500 which was in good shape but had it’s share of issues. You’ve done a your homework man, Well done, I am sure you will be happy with any truck you pick! If you are worried about more debt, though, I wouldn’t go into debt on a Chevy! Just joking.

I still very well may go with the Tundra. As I said, I'm torn. I like alot about the Tundra, including the looks better.. But I'm just trying to talk myself into following my heart and not my brain.

I just got rear ended in a 10 year old Tundra DC SR5 w/ 170K.. and I still got $15,500 for it. Adjuster said Tundra is by far the hardest to total due to high re-sale.

My Dad has owned 3 GMs since I bought my 2016 Tundra. First one, the 5.3 started burning oil like it thought it was a 2-stroke. Second one, loaded up 6.2 was a beast and gorgeous to drive, but the tranny started shifting weird, slamming hard downshifts. Dealer wanted his trade, so last fall he got a new 5.3. Nice looking truck, all blacked out. Not sure what compels him to keep going back, but hope this one is a keeper for him...

Definitely not the same level as not having brakes. I don't plan on using the airbags every trip, but I sure as hell need those brakes. And that is the second time those trucks have been recalled for brake issues - not very confidence inspiring.

My dad is a former GM employee and has had numerous Duramax Diesels because they pull a fifth wheel quite a bit and as far as I know he has never had a major problem with any of them albeit he trades them quite frequently. The last truck I owned before my Tundra was 2001 GMC Sierra, had it for almost 10 years but only put about 50K on it and never had any major problems so I don’t have a ton of technical information for you. but every time someone gave you their opinion of why Toyota then you come back with but Chevy this and Chevy that....every time. And that’s fine but sounds like you prefer the Chevy and doesn’t appear any further advice you get in here is really going to help you make a decision because sounds like you already know what each truck offers. This being my first Tundra I will say for what they cost they could have a little higher end materials on the interior but they are super easy to work on an take apart but ultimately they just freakin work and they are built extremely well! But again you always rebut with the Chevy this and the Chevy that regardless so that looks to be your preference. So go for it, it’s a nice truck as well.

Great debate here. I recently considered the same exact comparison and opted for the Tundra after reasonably considering my real usage and needs in a truck

    My 2 cents.

    I own a 11 dc tundra 4x4 5.7 stock beside CIA.
I TOW 8000 LBS CAMPER I don't run hard or crazy aggressive. Main reason I dont push it hard is started towing late in my trucks life 189000 miles I have 225000 now only use it to Peter around town and pull my camper.
I get a solid 8.5 9 mpg all the time towing 17 to 18.5 highway mpg unless terrible head wind.
My coworker just bought a 2019 Chevy Silverado it is a 5.3 his trip pulling his camper same distance 5500 lbs camper best he got running 65 mph 6 mpg now that being said this is a new truck with 2000 miles on it. Could get better after broke in I don't know but I was not impressed either was he. It does have a shit ton of bells an whistles and that's why he bought the truck, but he said it to me his dodge was better towing then the new chevy. Very sponge ride he was very up set. I tried to get him just to drive a toyota. But old men are stubborn and set in there ways. After all said and done he is stuck in his truck and very unhappy with its pulling performance. Just my ramble and hope to just help. Chevy is not what it used to be..

The new Silverado could be the ugliest front end and grill a truck has EVER had! GM completely ruined the design of the best looking p/u truck in the world with it's redesign of the Silverado and Sierra. They both look like some failed bastard love child of a Ford and Chevy relationship! I have also heard nightmare stories regarding the reliability of the new GM trucks. Give me reliability, give me a damn Yota!

I worked on enough Chevy's in my time and even worked at a dealership once. I was fixing Chevy's that haven't even sold yet...............take it form me, don't by a Chevy. Exception only for old classics.

These seem like list prices. Try Edmunds and price it. They give you 3 different costs. I just purchased mine and your pricing is a bit high.

I don't prefer the Chevy, I prefer a realistic, balanced conversation. So yeah, if you're making a comparison it makes A LOT of sense to attempt to counter arguments against one or the other.

Yeah, the Tundra interior and tech sucks. Toyota is taking us to the cleaners with no R&D or new tech being funded since effectively 2007. This tech exists in their other vehicles and in Lexus vehicles, but Toyota enjoys this brand loyalty that you see in this thread and therefor has no real motivation to remain competitive with other trucks.

I still very well may buy a Tundra - but I feel when the argument is "TUNDRA WILL NEVER BREAK AND CHEVY WILL BREAK EVERY DAY" you need to look for and find evidence either supporting or denying these claims, and that's why I responded to every emotional, unfounded claim with some facts.

I've already addressed reliability and resale. Look a few posts up..

Tundra is BARELY more reliable than Silverado according to several consumer reports, independent rankings, and verified resale values.

I do see a lot of complaints on the Chevy forums, most for minor things but a couple of major ones..

That said, there were 582,582 Silverados sold in the US in 2019 and only 111673 Tundras sold in the same place over the same timeframe. It would make sense that there are more complaints about the Silverado there too.

I do appreciate those who had meaningful things to say - Honestly this conversation has swayed me more toward a Tundra, but I do think a fair comparison needs to be made.

No disrespect meant, but I’m not sure where you’re getting your CR numbers? The last ranking I saw- actually both 2019 & 2020- had the Tundra far ahead of any other options in terms of long term reliability.

I’m the last guy to act like the Tundra is perfect, and everything else is junk- my truck is in for the cam tower leak as we speak... but, reality is, GM is still sorting out their active fuel management and transmissions. Pretty major stuff in my books.

Best of luck in your truck shopping!

I am no expert on tow ratings but I believe that truck manufacturers use different standards. Are you planning to tow over 9000 lbs? I got several quotes on Silverados when I bought my Tundra. No way am I buying another Ford and Dodge is not an option for me. I thought that I would give Chevy a chance. Color matching and locker were key things for me. Price turned me away even with huge discounts. I was looking at end of model year and discounts were like 20%+. Even then I was able to get Tundra and swap grille, upgrade headlights, and add 6112s coilovers on front. I had 2 Tacomas with lockers. I used locker often on the 2wd but only once in 4+ years on 4x4.

:):):):):)I understand you’re looking for facts. But it’s really hard to throw facts out there to sway you towards the Tundra. The one “fact” that I noticed is you said even your wife leans toward the Tundra. And you wanted us to help your heart not your brain. True fact: a happy wife equals a happy life. Listen to your heart and get the Tundra. Again no disrespect meant towards you. Please follow your heart and buy the Tundra for you and your wife. Still good luck with your decision.

Tough call based on your pricing. We have a 2013 Tahoe with 5.3l and tow package and a 2018 Tundra ltd 4x4, also passed down our 2003 tahoe with 4.8l. We prefer the Tundra ride currently. The 2003 Tahoe was and still is a solid truck at 180k miles (water pump, struts, brakes). The 2013 Tahoe has not been very good (dash started cracking at 40k miles and looks terrible at 75k miles now. 3 rack and pinions, intermediate steering shaft, oil cooler leak, rear diff seal leak, drvr door arm rest cracked, burned 1.5 qts every 3k miles until "Range" device installed to disable DoD around 40k miles). Main reason we didnt look at Chevy this last round was the DoD cylinder deactivation and direct injection issues that crop up. Maybe those have been fixed/refined but we didnt want to take the chance.

They all use the J2807 standard now. But having said that some seem to push it to the limit while others get conservative while using that standard. The Tundra got their number prior to the standard coming out, while the other 3 all have new redesigns built around it. Many on here will agree that while the Tundra has a lower tow rating, it gives you a much more confident towing feel than the other 3. That's one huge advantage to the extra weight, along with brakes that barely allow 17's to be fitted.
