1 is a no. Your vehicle in future will be for example a 100k truck with a new motor with 70k on it.

Word is we are getting a full complete engine, turbos, and all. Not sure about the radiator.... However, trans fluid, coolant and brake fluid should all be refreshed in this process I believe.

    1) No
    2) You will get new block, heads, oil pan and all the internals. Not sure about turbos, but most likely not. Everything else (alternator, etc.) will be reused.

Time will tell, how the used market reacts to it. If Toyota extends the warranty of just the motor and nothing else removed and replaced like the AC system, I doubt they will still get the high price they used to.

If the AC fails (for example) within a year of motor replacement, is it covered? Water & fuel pumps, any sensors including the wiring and connectors, fuel injectors, ect., covered if failure happens 2 years after? What about dash & cabin rattle noises if some bolt is loose? Lots of failure points with a cab off change out if not done perfectly.

If you are in the minority that keeps them for 10 years, nothing to worry about. For those that trade them every 3 or 4 years, who knows?

I change out vehicles way too often. I'll be steering clear of the recalled ones. I hope I am wrong and the replacement process is perfect and they are problem free 7 years or more down the road.

Mine is a 2022, so it should be part of this. How will they notify us?

You are notified in the app. Or go to NHTSA, input your VIN. Toyota was to snailmail letters last week.

Ok yeah, my app says there's a recall on this but no remedy by Toyota. They sent out snail mail letters last week? Wonder when we're going to be able to start bringing our trucks in to get this recall remedied. Mine has stalled a couple times. As I went to press the gas from a full stop, it wouldn't go, then it would go all of a sudden.

Are you talking about a stall (shuts down and has to be restarted) or hesitation on takeoff?

There was a TSB for that and then there was an issue with trucks that would creep ahead while in park that was remedied by reprogramming the transmission and I think that fixed the hesitation issue. What you’re experiencing is unrelated to engine failure.

Ok interesting. They've never taken my truck in for any of that. Regardless, it sounds like they're going to replace the engines in most if not all the '22 trucks. On my app it says I have a recall for this.

You have to tell your service advisor about the hesitation issue and they’ll inform you what can be done. I don’t know exactly how they were supposed to communicate the transmission creep one but they just told me they were doing a software update or something for the transmission when I took the truck for an oil change one time.

Just checked my door sticker and it says built date is 1/23. So I guess I’m in the window of getting a new motor?

Build date provides a range the issue occurred to a limited number of vehicles. If you don't have notification in the app or putting your VIN in the NHTSA website does not indicate your VIN is included - it's not.

If turbos are not included this is a shit job!
Turbos get damaged very easily by metal debris as they spin at ridiculous rpm.
There is a guy that I know at work who’s turbos failed at 60,000miles and got replaced.
Few months later his main bearing span and his short block got replaced.
My point is - if you have a problem with main bearing, almost certain your turbos are damaged too.

Was this turbo/main bearing on a Tundra?

Be interesting to see. Turbos are always an *. Some OEM drivetrain warranties over the years have considered Turbos an auxiliary attachment like the AC compressor covered by the bumper to bumper but not the powertrain warranty. It gets even more complicated because the EGR system can be considered an emissions system that is warrantied differently per US regulation and not OEM warranty preferences.

One would certainly hope this is a full crate engine affair. But a couple of turbos are real money items.

Yes. He had a 2022 tundra assembled in Jan 2022.
Early this year turbos failed. His track was loosing power and throwing error. He had to unplug his battery every time to reset the comp. dealer agreed to repair under warranty and shortly after his main bearing span.

I agree. And quite honestly I was surprised Toyota pulled this replacement. it is pricey for sure.

But since they are doing it, get it done right. It is obvious turbos get damaged same way main beating gets damaged by the metal debris.

this is why there are multiple owners who had short block done multiple times!!! There is no easy way to clean the oil circulation system from all the metal debris.
I also believe they made some modification to the engine and turbos acccording to car care nut. So it will be nice to get the latest version of all engine parts combined with newest firmware.

I need to pull my service records and see how much time my truck has spent at the dealership on repairs already already. Prior to the actual remedy being posted I contacted Toyota about initiating a buyback due to the amount of work and money they've already put into my truck, I've been holding off on the latest recalls because of how much time I've already wasted, they offered to comp me for my time after all the dealership trips before, but I asked them to just give me their extended warranty instead.

The radio head unit/brains for the entire truck has already been replaced 2-3 times in my truck due to debris between the screen layers (later found out there was a clean room issue after continually receiving units with issues), parts alone at the time were around 7500 or so each time not counting the labor, it technically still isnt fixed but the replacement parts were just as bad or worse. Pretty sure they've already sunk more than 20k into my truck for warranty work before this engine issue.

Minor issues with the trim continually popping off on the platinum and the wind screen on the moonroof popping out of the track, more a nuisance but has already been replaced multiple times. Also issue with the factory bedliner peeling. Not major fixes from a cost standpoint, but more time wasted at the dealership waiting on my truck or dropping it off.

AC is struggling to cool even on recirc at highway speeds, took almost an hour to bring the temperature down enough to stop sweating, wasnt even super hot outside (hasnt gone in for this yet, was trying to hold off until they had a remedy for the engine issue and fuel tube issue).

Still have the mystery issue of my fuel gauge resetting randomly, havent looked into that lately to see if anyone ever figured it out, more so a nuisance because it all resets (distance to empty/fuel gauge). Last time I asked about it there wasnt a fix.

I do really enjoy the truck despite the quirks and issues, its annoying, but I have friends with other vehicles that have had it worse and the manufacturer hasn't stood behind them at all. GF is currently dealing with transmission issues on her Explorer, which is a known issue for her year/model, but they dont want to cover it. My biggest complaint through all of this, I bought a truck for a reason, but when I have to leave it for days or weeks at a time for service, there's never any trucks available to rent. Thats the main reason I haven't gone back for the minor stuff yet.

sucks man, thats the reason I didn't buy a first year model, especially during a pandemic.

as far as the AC, you can change this with Carista, (once you know there is nothing mechanically wrong with it of course)

change the temp dial cal to -2C, works wonders.

Has Toyota released the actual part number that is going to be replaced or just said engine assembly?

I've been wondering if a slight detune was one of the options on the boardroom table. Didn't a manufacturer get sued for such shenanigans?

Just called my local dealer parts counter for a paint pen. Asked the guy about the tundra engine issue. He said they just got one in for a new engine and transmission. I asked for year and miles. 2024 with 48 miles on it… holy crap.

He said Toyota approved new long block for it and transmission. He said the transmission was having some issues so it got cleared for replacement along with engine. I asked him twice about the miles and he said yup, 48 miles. Crazy.

Edit: Will try to get build date out of them when I go to get part.
