My takeaways from this thread are:

    1. It’s great news that Toyota has addressed this issue head on, and without using half measures.

    2. Some people really need to find some hobbies or more constructive outlets for their mania.

Interesting news I just picked up my wife’s GX 460 out of service at Lexus. I talked to the technician about what went on with the LX 600. This is a direct quote from a very large Lexus dealership tech in North Texas.

“ The demand for the LX 600 when it was released was unprecedented the waitlist was 36 months at one point. Japan was also in the middle of another Covid outbreak and shutdown the engine plant. To meet supply Toyota started shipping V-35 engines from Alabama to be put in the LX 600s being assembled in Japan. Those are the motors that have failed, not the Japanese made ones. We have seen three of them fail and they all came from Alabama. Japan has been building almost that exact same motor for the LS 500 for years prior to the LX600 and it’s a good motor. They just $&/$ the bed in Alabama.”

completely agree just hope they take care of the hybrid owners too. I guess from a safety standpoint they are a lower priority.

What happens to the folks that already had a rebuild? I'd prefer a whole new engine.

This is the kind of reaction to a problem that gains buyers. If this happened to the big three....Whoops it did happen to Ram with the Ecodiesel, they never admitted to a problem just replaced the engine.

not surprising at all, yota moves slow on everything, always has.

a lot of that = better product and longer term solutions

it’s a way with them , slow and steady, yes to the point of frustration at times but it is what it is, but or don’t buy, simple stuff really

There are specific requirements for percentage of build components to be sourced from Japan for a car to use the "made in Japan language". I think an engine would disqualify it.

LOL. Seems plausible enough. The relocation of manufacturing to NA is probably the biggest reason for the decline in Toyota quality.

I leased my 2022. I’m curious to see how this plays out. Per my contract, I can’t turn the truck in until the recall is satisfied. I’ve got 8 months to get this done along with the other 100k owners…

Acknowledging an issue implies an issue has been found. That takes time. No use jumping the gun before you have done your due diligence. I’m playing devil’s advocate here I know but look at what happened with uhm, let’s say COVID. Creating mass panic and confusion before all the information has been analyzed and then the people that created said panic doesn’t want to stake a step back and admit they might have been a bit hasty. Not looking to start an argument on that but hopefully you can see what I’m trying to say.

I really wonder how long it’s going to take to do 100k engine swaps. I bet it’s 2-3 years before they can get through the backlog.

I’m waiting as long as possible before I get my engine done. I’ve had no issues (knock on wood) and I want those Dealership Techs to have the swap down to a science before I give them mine.

Would you like to guess how much people who buy an LX600 $19kover it $100k sticker care about that?

Those cheerleading toyota for recalling 100k engines are glossing over the obvious.
Hybrids use same engine made in same place but hybrid buys you enough time to safely exit whatever thoroughfare you find yourself on when the main bearings let go.

Seems much more likely that this is done out of pressure or expected pressure from regulators. Doing the right thing would be all engines, not just those engines without power after they self implode

For many, it matters, and it is why I have owned so many Land Cruisers.

But that is not the point, Toyota cares about their flagship vehicles being made in Japan.

Well, whatever the case may be, If Toyota have access to full engines, they would most probably replace the entire engine if a hybrid did fail instead of rebuilding a shortblock.
Also, if the hybrid system did have enough power to get the driver and his family out of harms way Like Toyota stated, it comes down to inconvenience if there was a failure. Granted that could go from a minor inconvenience to a mayor one.
So, when all is said and done, if I owned a hybrid, you can bet your ass there would be some cheerleading from me if I got a new motor if it failed. That is to say that the hybrid wouldn’t eventually be included in the recall anyway.
Be positive man. Life is too short to always find and focus on the negatives.

You want them to have it down, for sure, but after too long they may get bored with it all and start getting lax with procedure. So maybe somewhere in the middle is the magic spot.

What’s not clear to me is what happens to Tundra’s outside of the recall build dates that end up with the same main bearing failures? Will Toyota install complete new engines for those instead of the short blocks done to date?

I believe those were made after they found the source of the machining debris and implemented changes to the motor production process.

The 2nd question is totally valid.

Regarding the first question, my truck is after the recall build dates but before the change in short block part number change (Jan of 2024 I believe) and the main bearings 1 & 4 (April 2024, I believe) stop manufacture dates. At my 10k oil change there was substantial glitter and debris in the oil. So it’s not a matter of if, but when I need an engine repair/replacement. I would really like a full engine replacement instead of a short block replacement.

I have the 2022 Tundra Platinum with only 19k miles on it. I've had some engine rattling and stall in the past. I've been afraid of going on long trips at high speeds due to this recall and am glad to hear they'll give us a new engine. A few questions though I'm hoping someone might be able to please answer:

    1. When they give us a new engine, do they reset our odometer back to zero? Or leave it alone because of other parts like transmission, etc.

    2. Do they just replace the engine block and have to put back our existing turbos, air filter, radiator, etc or is the entire front under the hood replaced?

    Thank you!
