I like the Lexus 5.0L in the RCF, GSF, LC500, and IS500 with some tweaking mated to the 8 or 10-speed. With the hybrid MAX powertrain, it would be 520hp/500lbft without forced-induction.

I live at higher elevation, so I’m a fan of forced induction. I’m also a fan of being able to easily turn up the power after warranties expire.

If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, suppose that Toyota's "legendary reliability", was considered a liability by Corporate? Given that you're looking at a new EV after 8 years (or less because of mileage) due to the high cost of replacement EV batteries vs a Toyota ICE that literally lives forever.

Maybe Toyota was looking at an ICE engine that would more closely align with the lifespan of an EV battery and undershot the mark substantially? (Oops!!!) More sales, more often, more profit...

I don't think they consider "reliability" as a liability, but they do make decisions based on what sells the most cars. In the 1970s and 1980s, when car reliability was atrocious, offering cars that were significantly more reliable than competition was a very strong selling point. Reliability and fuel economy where the two things people were looking for.
Nowadays, things have changes. Consumers no longer care that much about long-term reliability. We got used to things being "disposable" and a lot of things that traditionally used to be repaired are simply thrown away (TVs, appliances, ...).
Today's car buyers look for "technology", at an affordable price. They want their cars to be an extension of their cell phones. Reliability no longer counts as a high-priority decision factor. Hyundai/KIA is an excellent example of how they understand consumer preferences - they sell cars that are loaded with features and "technology" for a low price, paired to best in class warranty. No wonder they are the 3rd fastest growing auto manufacturer in the world (behind #1 BYD and #2 Tesla).
Toyota has to remain competitive, so they need to offer the features that consumers prefer, and these come at a cost, so something has to be sacrificed.

If traditional "reliability" is less important than the latest tech, obviously consumers have had their expectations recalibrated. So a new vehicle every 8 (EV) to 10 (Hyundai) years (or sooner) is the expectation. Figuring out how to fine tune delivering less while convincing consumers, of multiple age groups, that they are actually getting more is the next magic trick.

It’s still difficult to tease apart internet drama and reality on failure rates. I dropped my Tundra off for service and talked to the senior writer for a bit. They service 200 cars a day as a reference point. So, not a huge or a small dealer either. They have had 5 failures.

Would you know how many 3rd gen Tundras they service? That might put things into perspective.

My local dealership is in a town with a population of 32,000. When mine failed in the spring, they had a total of three blown engines then. The number of US dealer is supposed to be 1,500. The number of vehicles in the recall is 100,000. I would guess the number of vehicles is a good bit higher than the 1% bantered about.

The 2UR-GSE, whether silver to blue top, was never designed to be a truck motor. It makes less torque at higher RPM than the 3UR-FE in the previous generation Tundra/Sequoia.

It was .0824 when they announced the recall in May, so yes most likely more than 1%.

My dealer had 4. To your point, even 3 per dealer would be 4500 or 4.4%.

We know some of those are not covered in the recall so it’s hand-granade estimate but I’d bet we’re closer to 5% than 1%.

EDIT- Does Canada count? Another 287 or so dealers. But their engines don’t fail. @PBNB

Back when Toyota issued their statement and claimed the 800ish failures, Ryan’s spreadsheet was at about a tenth of that. I thought that was a good way to kind of extrapolate a future failure rate from submissions on there. Meaning the rate should be around 1.25% currently.

Man, I miss when everything didn’t have to be black or white and nothing in between. My truck had been nothing but a joy to own and drive. Of course I am aware of the recall and potential for failure but I’m willing to take the risk. No, that does not mean I’m denying the problem!! People choose to sell trucks affected because of whatever reason and that’s their right to do. People might also have an opinion regarding the 3 rd gen based on nothing more than the “research” they have done. Although a little more annoying, still well within their rights. Where it does however get a little sticky, is when these people start aggressively arguing that people like me are idiots and Toyota fanboys and whatnot. If we could all just allow someone else to have an opinion based on different experience, that would be great.

Meh - I wouldn’t step in the ring with either of those females. That one’s face was falling off by the end.

I'm around 60 days out of the vehicle and although my initial lemon law dispute through the NCDS was declined by the arbitrator because she felt the delay was due to parts shortages beyond the manufacturer's control, the good news is I believe the pressure I applied by filing the dispute moved me up the list to get an engine. I just heard from the dealership that my motor had arrived yesterday and that they'd be working on it the rest of the month but they're not sure if it would be done this month. Most of us familiar with dealership service departments know that it will take them two days to do the work, but they're going to wait two weeks or more before starting. No way is a master tech spending an entire 3 weeks with my truck. Toyota Motor Corp and the dealerships do the bare minimum, and you have to spend a ton of time advocating for yourself to get that. I don't know what it would take to restore my confidence in Toyota at this point; they have failed me on so many levels, and it's been such a stressful and frustrating time.
