    2023 hybrid limited tundra
I'm new here. I'm not sure where to post this to ask for advice.
Literally just signed up yesterday after my 2023 hybrid limited engine failed the night before. Extreme knocking. I wrote a post on the stickied "i-force engine failure thread."

    I'm up in Vancouver Canada
    2023 tundra hybrid limited
    w/ TRD OFFROAD package
mileage when failure occured: 36000km (22k miles)
    build date: Jan 2023

This is very frustrating to say the least. I spoke with the dealer and they said my tundra isn't effected by the recall because it doesn't include hybrids? Are they not literally the same engine with a hybrid boost bolted on?

The dealer says they will not replace the engine assembly. They will only do a engine rebuild. Is this a pretty safe repair? OR am I going to expect related issues down the line.
I don't know if I trust their workmanship. And now they are refusing to speak to me regarding anything recall related.

One of my concerns is if or when this recall is expanded to hybrids, will this include rebuilt engines as well?
The other concern I have how long do rebuilt engines last? Should I try to sell it as soon as I get it back? Is it a ticking time bomb?
Also, how long does it usually take for these type of engine rebuild? Am i looking at several weeks? or several months? The shop will not provide me with any info....

Hopefully this method is so successful and mitigates expenses so much that Toyota adopts complete engine assemblies as the standard method for everything going forward.

Better for the customers, better for the technicians, better for Toyota.

Ask your service advisor if a Master Tech is assigned to do the repair to start with.

A fair buy back policy is still my preference for affected trucks, which mine isn't, for far. Not too confidant about engine swaps by oil change techs who get promoted to master techs because they showed up for work for 6 months.

I talked to a Toyota mechanic and he said he will be shocked if they issue long blocks as he's never seen Toyota sending long blocks before, only short blocks. I'm hoping that for 100k engines, they might make an exception as labor costs would be so much higher and I doubt many dealers have the manpower to do it. At my local dealer, they only have 2 techs qualified to work on Gen3 Tundra engines. Assuming it takes 2 days/truck, that's 2 trucks a week per tech, that's 4 trucks per week.

There are approximately 1500 Toyota dealers in North America so each one will have an average (not that it will work like that) of around 66-67 of these truck to do.

Techs get paid less hours for warranty work, some might quit if they have to do exclusively warranty work for 4-5 months. For Tundra's turbo for example, they get paid 13h for warranty work vs 22h non-warranty work. Job takes the same amount of time to complete but they get paid significantly less so they're not happy to do only warranty work.

Welcome @Adrian17. Sorry to hear about the engine failure with your truck. Very frustrating and very inconvenient!

I’m curious if Toyota will switch to a full engine replacement on your truck since this news just broke. I certainly hope Toyota provides the same fix, complete new engine ( not a short block), for any main bearing failed engine on the Tundras moving forward. Not just the ones with the build dates within the recall.

Build date on my buddies truck is 2/13/24. How do we find out if he has the new main engine bearing?
Mine is March 2022, so I'm in the thick of it, but wondering how we determine if his motor has the new bearings.

I'm in the same boat. 3/22 build date. 57k miles. Zero issues... Until now. Do I really want to have the engine replaced? AC system, engine cooling system, exhaust manifold removed and replaced. How long before we develop an exhaust leak? Coolant leak?

But, I really love this truck, and so maybe just trade her in on a '25?

Does anyone know what QA / QC improvements are tangible on a '25 vs a '22?

Does it come with the exhaust manifolds and turbos attached from the factory, or does the tech attach those in the shop prior to engine install?

Don't have exact numbers. In 2022 it was approximately 1 in 8 tundras, in 2024 1 in 4 tundra's sold and 2023 1 in 3 sold so far.

I’m guessing Toyota will utilize authorized 3rd party shops for this recall. Otherwise this will take quite a while and defeat the purpose of restoring quality assurance to the customer. I have a great shop near me and would prefer them over the dealer who has no idea what they actually are selling.

So discussing lack of recovery hooks and catastrophic engine failures is "*$%# stirring"?
Listen, I know this has been a rough 48 hours for those like you that wanted to die on the "everything is fine with the motor" hill.

However, that's not an excuse for foul language and personal attacks.

It doesn’t seem like anything will satisfy you sort of a complete buyback on these trucks even a complete engine replacement is not good enough for you.

In the immortal words of Sgt. Hulka: "Lighten up Francis."

I stand corrected on that link and apologize. Post Deleted. If you find a link saying that the LX600 Engines that failed did not come from Alabama and did come from Aichi, please post. Toyota's Chronology only mentions reviewing QA/QC data from the Alabama plant and not Aichi.

I think the engine has somewhat of an exhaust manifold built into the head and the turbos may bolt directly to the head or a short stack coming off the head.

Will Toyota save all these replaced engines and possibly rebuild them? Will they then install a factory remanufactured engine in a recalled truck?

I really think claiming that those of us who said we are willing to roll the dice on the motor, since the failure rate was (and still is) very low, implied that “everything is fine with the motor”. We are well aware that some motors experience failure. And as for dying on a hill, that’s not the same as saying you acknowledge the risk but you’re willing to accept it as such. Please let’s just stay on point and not go from one “the sky is falling” extreme to the other “there’s nothing wrong” like all the politicians and snowflakes are making the world out to be. There are grey areas and not just black and white. We agree on 95% of this debacle. The 5% remaining is what our personal risk tolerance is and I’m sure we’ll all agree that all of us are entitled to that.
