I dropped my truck off this week for it's 15K service and a few repair items (cracked seat, fuel gauge software update, etc.) and they told me they have only done two engine swaps so far. The service writer tried to downplay the issue.

Yup, wish Toyota was more transparent with the issue. Tons of third gens running around LV and I haven't seen one broke on the side of the road yet.
Mind you though, I keep my distance when I'm behind one.

My dealer just informed me that Toyota is providing a 20 yr warranty on the engine, those on the recall can get the engine replaced at any time regardless of mileage, so it's up to the owner when they want the new motor, and it's just the engine, same everything else. I guess the updated letter will be coming out shortly to those of us affected.

    Lots of stuff!
    @Screwy Louie
It seems that this approach wouldn't fit the whole "Safety" situation.

The way I see it, as soon as there is a motor, it must get put into an involved truck. Toyota needs to push these engines into all the involved 22's and 23's as soon as possible. They need to minimize the potential of a crash or injury. They need to show NHTSA that they are aggressively working to fix this issue.

Letting owners wait for a long time would look like they are taking a relaxed approach to fixing the issue.

Just my take on it. I do like the comment about the 20 year engine warranty! :)

I fully expect that up here, we wont get anything like that, Toyota Canada doesn't seem to care one bit about how this affects us. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to charge me for my new engine!

My late 23 is outside of the current recall but if it gets expanded I’d gladly take the 20 years and not go through the hassle of my dealer lifting my cab off my truck, they have fucked up far simpler tasks

Yeah but maybe your electric engine will kick in once you slow down a bit from driving unsafe speeds

Just for the sake of discussion. With regards to Northern Toyota's post, If one were to get a engine recall but elected to wait till their engine failed I would think that if any injury were to occur to them or others "i.e. causing a wreck" due to engine failure that it would absolve Toyota of any liability as it was the owner's choice. On a lighter note as Tunrod mentioned, one might enjoy the benefit of people being afraid to tailgate you while this issue is being resolved :) .
This would make a good bumper sticker for tailgaters. "If you can read this be aware this engine may fail at any time. The question you have to ask yourself is "DO YOU FEEL LUCKY" :)

Careful about these judgements. Out in the free world the speed limit can be 75 or 80. ;)

They are not built someone else. All are assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama. (TMMAL)

They are cleaned in the same machine as the non-hybrid, because guess what, the short block is the same across non-hybrid & hybrid.

They are built on the same V6T assembly line as the non-hybrid.

Hey sudobash, you seem to know more that your average cat, can you tell us if there is silver in the V35A-FTS main bearings? Lots of speculation out there especially with the trace amounts showing up in basically every oil analysis.

there has to be...no way were all seeing silver for no reason. Idk of any "solder" in the oil passages other than maybe turbo oil feed/return lines. I've consistently been seeing high levels of silver.

IDK if anyone with an oil analysis has had a failure to conclusively link those.

Assuming silver is used for bearing materials, that doesn't mean the bearing caused the issue...it could still very well be debris that gets jammed in there and scratches off bearing material (silver) and then we see it in our reports....Who knows. I wasn't implying that there was some sort of correlation. Simply saying that I don't believe for a second that all the silver readings we are seeing are due to "solder".

I believe I am the highest recorded silver content analysis so far and my truck runs just fine. Wont be doing any more tests though, and IDK if a post failure sample would be helpful at all...its gonna have all sorts of jiggly bits in there.

Ultimately it is the bearing causing the engine to seize. What exactly precipitated it might well be the debris but that is a separate question. If the bearings are coated in silver and starts scraping off, like you said, then that would be something we can look for. If there isn’t any silver, then we are chasing our tails and that’s why I asked.

Since that is the case, the reasoning that hybrids are not included in the safety recall due to having the electric motor is silly. Instead of stopping in the main lanes, we can make it to the shoulder, which is still unsafe on a highway. My battery shows 30-60% charge at all times. I wonder what that "range" is? 1/4 mile?

Yea plus think about if you did have an engine failure. You going to be last in line behind the non hybrid motors, because theirs is a safety recall. Hybrid owners are definitely getting screwed and hopefully Toyota wises up. Only time will tell.

    Lots of stuff!
If we get a new engine every 10k then shouldn't they include a set of knobs with every new engine! No need to get oil changes if the engine gets changed out every 10k! :)
