Tundra engine recall - interesting news

Sequoia is hers. She does not let modding it for more adventurous overlanding. Not even stock tires, because she paid for them and they have to wear down to a reasonable depth before scheduled for replacement. She is very cost aware.

It serves Toyota right for trying to replace a perfectly good engine that was well proven. They chose to do something labeled as innovation which bit them in the a$$

 

Innovation happens man. Times change. By that logic we would all still be riding horses.

 

Not every change is innovation. Sometimes change is a step or two backwards.

 

Government regulation forced the change. Period. End of story.

 

I wouldn’t have bought the truck with the old V8. I drive 100 miles per day and getting 14 mpg was a non starter, especially with California gas prices.

I will agree to that. A stronger, more fuel efficient engine on the other hand sounds like a step or two forward tho. Reliability isn’t what it should be YET. Sometimes innovation doesn’t happen at once and you need time to get it where it needs to be and I think Toyota will get there. I for one absolutely love the new motor. (Till it grenades I guess because I know someone will comment that) You can either resist progress and innovation, or embrace it. Which option you choose to take will have no impact on the change happening however.

 

You mean that v6 with twin turbo gets good gas milage? The people I know don't get much better if any milage than I get in my v8

 

yes, its way better than my 16 tundra or any of my 5 tundras for that matter.

highway can get 22+ easily, my others were about 15 or so. That said, can you boost like a MOFO and get great mileage, no, but if you want good or great mpg, you can stay out of the boost and get it.

That said, I never really gave a shit about MPG.

if toyota could have figured out emissions improvements on the 5.7, they would still have to figure out how to pump up the power as the 5.7 is significantly underpowered compared to all the next gen boosted motors and hybrid motors on the market.

This really shows while towing, this truck pulls much better, especially with the low torque peak.

Perhaps they could have punched it out to 6.2, but then emissions would be even harder.

 

I had a 2012 and got a 2022 just after. Same driving style, apples to apples comparison and I get around 25% better.

mine was a pig, I got 11 in the winter and 15 highway summer blend, max. I never understood how anyone got 20 with the old set-up, but some people did. I thought, damn, they must have had a tailwind with a sail, lol.

 

Exactly. Some of us just have a heavier foot. IT does seem like some guys don’t realize that and want to compare best case scenario on 5.7 to worst case on 3.4 and then decide what information to use to substantiate a decision that’s already made. We had a saying growing up, if you want to hit a dog, you’ll find a stick.

You hit the nail on the head here. I believe the TTV6 has about half the emissions of the V8. Could be wrong but I vaguely remember that from specs when the V35A showed up in the Tundra.

 

I really didn’t get much better mileage in my ‘22 than I did in my ‘18. They were both CMs. In town driving mileage was about the same. Regarding long road trips/highway driving, I got marginally better mileage in my ‘22. The ‘22 also did about 1-2 mpgs better than my ‘18 towing the same camper. Even with the minimal mpg gains, I still regret selling the ‘18 to buy a ‘22.

 

yes, 100%, emissions is what killed the V8, not MPG as many think.

that said, Toyota had to do something to get that giant 13 city off the sticker, if nothing else for perception.

but they could have done something with that MPG for a next gen V8 if they wanted to. But they need way more power than a regular production V8 could make I think. Even GM 6.2 is underpowered compared to all this new shit coming out. I mean the tundra hybrid has what like damn near 600 lbs of torque at 2,400?

the V8 is dead and dying, the yota 350 is gone, the hemi is gone, ford has a 5.0 (oh boy), so really the GM 6.2 is the last one and these new trucks will out pull that easily

 

Every maker has to comply with government CAFE and emissions standards unless they want to exit the US market. That is why the move to lawn mower engines has intensified across the industry in every segment. Just easier to cheat the test with a tiny engine with turbos at rest than a 5.7 liter V8 turning.

HDs are exempt to you don't see the engines in them going down to 4 and 6 cylinders. So it is not change for the sake of change or change due to engine power becoming more dense due to innovation.. It's change for sake of govt regulation

 

According to users on fuelly.com it is a 3mpg improvement and the engines are still self-deleting three years into production.

Obviously that will vary for people, mine is way more than that for example, but I happened to have a pig model 5.7 in the 2016. So mine is more like 3 city better , but highway is like 6-7 better or more.

but just to use your fuelly data, thats still 25%+ , nothing to write off. Again, it was emissions and power that was needed.

401 at 3,400 isnt going to get it done in todays market, Im not trying to knock it, just saying the power level has really jump since 2007.

I'll be honest, RAM is on my list if I went the HD route, which is the only thing that will likely get me out of the 2nd gen Tundra.

I'd get a Cummins and do a delete as God intended them to be. The more concerning issue with RAM's are the transmissions, electrical and suspension. All makes and models have problems, I feel like it is "choose the lesser of two evils" at this point.

 

I'm planning a HD Diesel also. I'd prefer the cummins over the powerstroke (only deleted) however, like you said the transmission issues may push me to the Ford.

 

Just wait until all these engines all in tight emissions compliance currently need expensive maintenance as they age to keep them in compliance. The overall cost-effective serviceable life is going to be significantly less based on that metric alone, driving up the cost per mile of ownership by a huge amount. We don't know yet just how royally we all have been screwed, but we are happy to live in ignorant bliss. With lighter wallets. Of course.

I thought Ram solved the trans thing by going ZF on the 1/2 ton and Aisin on the HD.

my 1/2 ton ram had the ZF 8 and it was awesome
