I second this question. I have been following this but do not understand why hybrids are completely ignored. As far as I understand it’s the same exact engine with a pancake electric motor for the “hybrid” portion. What am I missing?

My guess is they will deal with the 102k recalled for now and add those later along with the other 23 non hybrid.

This decision appears to be based on hybrid owners not facing the same safety issue and therefore less liability for Toyota. This decision does not seem to be the proof of a continued deep commitment to dependability, but perhaps they will get to them eventually…

I hope that’s the case. It’s odd they haven’t said anything when everyone knows we have the exact same engine.

Ya it’s very interesting how this has rolled out. That electric pancake motor is only 48 hp. I guess they figure it could get you off the road, but with a complete engine failure do they even know for sure the electric motor would pick up 100% of the load? Sure seems it would still be very dicey.

Agreed, 100%. Many have said Toyota is doing the right thing. I say bs, they are covering their rear, because of the safety issue for non-hybrids. Hybrids better breakdown or sell before the warranty expires.

I’ve been saying this since 30 May as well. I think this recall is a good step forward for owners. It might eventually prop up resale values….it might also kill resale in the short term becuse every news article just puts more of this bad news out into the hands of the normal uninformed buyer.

I traded my ‘23 in two days ago. Cargurus trade value dropped 8k last week alone. I’m glad I negotiated the trade price last week.

Aside from a buyback, this is the best option for 3rd gen and the most costly for Toyota. I understand people being upset and certainly wouldn’t want to have gone through this with a new truck. Will this satisfy everyone? No. Could they have done it quicker? Maybe. Does this demonstrate why Toyota is still one of the best brands out there? In my mind, yes. To be able to own up to your mistakes (even if a bit late), take a huge financial and PR hit, and potentially offer remediation on EVERY engine vs only the affected ones shows a level of accountability that not many companies have. The naysayers will claim that they’re doing it to cover their asses and only because of safety issues that could cost them many more millions of dollars - all may be true. But show me a company that has approached a problem like this……….i will wait. Anyone remember the VW fiasco?!?! You think any of the other auto makers would go this far? I don’t……and that’s why I remain a Toyota fan boy and will consider them in every vehicle purchase moving forward for me and my family:

They're not doing anything for the non-owners that have been so upset?

Ever been thru a service bay? Cab off repairs are not as uncommon as you might think. Lots of engine, transmission and frame issues are best fixed cab off that tearing the truck body apart.

My Toyota dealer is a single entrance/exit affair so can't really see in there. But across 15 years of GM dealerships with a door per bay saw a cab off on a lift or two everything I drove thru the lot post service.

I went thru the Honda 5 speed auto that grenades every 30k. My dealer had several techs dedicated to tranny changes for several years. The service manager told me this guys were such experts on the tranny swap they were doing them almost 2x as fast as when they started. Those guys could do it with a blindfold on I bet

My brother works as a mechanic for Verizon. They remove truck cabs everyday for simple repairs. It’s pretty common there.

I have 46k and feel the exact same as you. We drove our trucks with a rental engine for 2 years, probably 3+ by the time we get our new engines. I'm very happy with the outcome and is why I purchased Toyota

My engine went 2K ago and was replaced with a short block at my local dealer. I would much rather have a new engine from the factory. I wonder where that leaves me and if the actual replacement short block might be part of the recall.

Ask your dealer for the manufacture date, they'll be able to pull it up. Mine shows as 2/13/23 but my VIN isn't part of the recall. Someone must have come back from lunch that day and realized the problem and changed the manufacturing process after they hoovered their happy meal.

Agree. I had cab offs 3 times on Super Duty's. Routine.

It's really funny how people will listen to everything that a master mechanic says on YouTube and quote it as gospel but not trust them to pull a cab.

Why has the class action lawsuit thread been locked? I am not a person that like lawsuits but in this case, I think it is warranted. I am a true Toyota fan. I have owned well over a dozen Toyotas and have loved each and every one. I have NEVER lost this much money on my Toyota purchase. I unfortunately own a 2024 1794 I-Force Max. This is currently not even in the picture of this recall although it was manufactured in 2023. 2024 Tundra's are failing too. Just because they are newer you will not see as many failures yet. The value of my $76,000 truck is down to the low 40's if I am luck and it only has 3,000 miles on it. I already get metal vibration sounds like a shield under my truck is loose. They can't seem to find the problem, but it gets loud in the drive through. This is the FIRST time I regret my Toyota purchase.

your truck isn't down to the low 40s from 76K, good lord. anyone who offers you that is straight up ripping you off.

and there is no class action damages when they are giving out new motors for all trucks recalled and/or fixing the other failures under warranty with no cost and providing a loaner.

class action isn't valid nor going to do anything for this. As far as the thread it was nothing but bullshit and people were getting beyond stupid and personal, it needed to go IMO

just drive and be happy, if it blows up somehow, deal with it then. A loose shield noise isn't the same thing as the engine blowing up. Just keep working with them or another dealer to find the noise, it sucks but sometimes those things happen.

For those who traded or sold their recalled Tundra, I assume the next owner will receive the engine replacement?

Yea I have to call bullcrap on that value. I have 2024 limited that paid around 62k back in February, build date was 10/23. I could sell it to Carvana today for 54k according to the offer received by just putting my truck info in. I have around 5500 miles and my truck is a limited hybrid. While yea that is 8k decrease in under 6 months but the car market is not what it used and what happened during Covid will likely never happen again.
also, the issue you are referencing that you hear in the drive thru is a part of the hybrid system. It has been discussed here and on reddit countless times. It doesn’t seem to be a cause for alarm.

Is the best play here to buy a cheap high mileage '22-'23 and then get in the queue?

thats an interesting thought, not for me, but I bet some people will do that.

grab a recalled truck knowing your getting a brand new 0 mile motor with likely a full powertrain warranty

could likely leverage the shit out of the seller or one of these guys who are panic dumping their rigs

Carvana is about the only standard quote you should post for discussion . If a dealer has met sales quota or sales stretch goals for the month they are spinning the big FU greed wheel of trade in offers trying to make 50% off your trade.

I'd look for one that falls under the recall and still qualifies for or comes with a Toyota extended warranty. Get the truck, buy the Platinum warranty from Jerry or whoever sells it cheap still and then just wait in line for the engine and boom, bob's your uncle.
