i wasn’t talking about for the individual owner

every engine and manufacturer has an acceptable failure rate when the design and test a production motor , that is what I was speaking to

They may extend it some eventually once they get the process started on this group of 100k. Will be a while before they would announce that though.

Either way it should be easier for others outside of that group to get more than just a short block if their engine goes. That’s a plus.

I have a 11/30/23 build date so not part of the recall. If the real fix wasn’t until early 2024 then I may try to work out a deal down the road to snag a 2025 or 2026.

    What’s wrong with stock?
Wouldn’t the trucks lose value as they wouldn’t be a matching numbers vehicle? Or not all original? If you get into a car accident you have diminished value because it is no longer all original. Does this concern anyone other than me?

Are you saying because it has a new motor?

if so, no, not when it’s a known issue and brand new motor built, installed , and warranty by Toyota

3rd Tundra is not a classic car and never will be. Matching numbers don’t matter

The challenge is that the engine replacement will be a “cab off” process done by techs at local dealers. This process may result in varied results and may cause a variety of issues. I would be surprised to see the values bounce back after the engine replacement is completed and don’t forget that we have been in more of a buyers market lately anyways.

This will definitely hurt Toyota financially and have a material impact on stock value. Toyota's profite is in the order of $25-30 billion before tax, not $65b. So this will be a 10% hit to their annual profit. It won't make them go bankrupt but will definitely impact the balance sheet. For perspective, Ford announced a hit of $800 million or about half of their quarterly profit (12% on annual basis) due to warranty repairs and it sent its shares 18% down. Toyota shares are 2% down on Tokyo stock exchange while the overall NIKKEI is flat. Expect 5 to 10% drop in stock value once the cost impact of this recall is announced.

I think it depends on how savvy the potential buyer is. Personally, I wouldn’t buy a Tundra that has a new motor at full market value, I’d just find a used one that was built after the fix, whatever that turns out to be (after part number change on the main bearing?). A dealer tech will do the best they can given the time allotted for this job, but IMO itll never be as “tight” as a factory built truck. That said, if I owned one already, I could live with a long block replacement and be satisfied with the fix.

No clarity on hybrids? So far it sounds like hybrids are not recalled, so no fix for us?

I agree with you. I would just search and buy one manufactured after the fix. I would be surprised to see the value bounce back

This should satisfy a lot of owners. I would’ve thought they would replace as needed. But this is the right way to go about it.

New tundra owner and just purchased a 23 last Friday. VIN isn’t pulling anything up on the recall site. Am I safe?

if you’re not experiencing any knocking or rough engine running you’re probably fine. Mine only did some weird stuff when I had it in ECO mode. I found some posts on here with other owners experiencing the same thing. Haven’t had it in ECO since. Never did it again.

I would feel pretty safe saying I guarantee Toyota has an accrual built in to their operating budget for covering exactly these types of issues. I'm not saying you're incorrect about their net revenue, and I'm not saying the overall dollar amount with this isn't large. I am however saying it's not correct to apply this chunk against that net revenue because I'm sure this will come from money above the line. Not to mention, a quick finance search shows TMC has an annual net income closer to $45b, but even more has over $300b in equity. I would expect that once the emotion about this runs it's course, the stock will be just fine.

I was planning on keeping my Tundra long term anyways and with 35k already on my 2023, a brand new engine sounds great to me.

I’m curious if there will be a buy back option. Sounds reasonable if someone is looking to get out.

Pretty satisfied with it myself. I have 46k on it, it’s been trouble free, and now I am going to go back to zero on the engine (as I continue to rack up discounted miles in the meantime), in a truck I expect to keep for a decade at least (plan to anyway). Resale value at that point is nil, and I would have well over 200k (again, planned, who knows). I will have milked the value out of it by then. I buy vehicles to use. In my case this is an incredibly fortunate turn of events. I have very little worry in the engine failing anyway.

this is still probably too early to ask, but i currently have a cat shield installed where the bolts may be stripped on it. do you think this would cause issues with the swap? i'm assuming so since you're saying the cab may have to come off for the swap.

i'm really hoping i don't need to drill those bolts out to remove the cat shield for them to perform this.

You shouldn’t be worried about a cat shield man. They’re going to have your truck tore apart to put a new engine in. I’d make short work of your cat shield with some cutoff tools

Since this is a recall, will it remain open for all affected vehicles regardless of age/mileage? Wondering if I could in theory keep driving the truck and then get a new engine whenever it happens shit the bed? Or if it doesn't, just get a new engine at say 150k miles?

    Glad I bought a ‘24 on sale.

I had a recalled Tacoma (frame rust) and they bought it back for way over KBB retail, significantly more than I had even paid for it. I’ve always figured they’ll do the right thing.

Good on Toyota. Bought mine this past Sunday, had faith they’d do the right thing so really happy to see this.

They are very discounted currently (10k off in TX) so think I bought at a decent time for once. Curious if this will help restore confidence in buyers moving forward.

Just wanted to drop in after my suspension and tell all yall third gen owners congrats and glad you are getting new motors. I’m still glad I didn’t join you as I was going for the hybrid and it looks like hybrid owners remain effed. Plenty of hybrids seeing exact same failure. If Plano cared as much about reliability as they do about a class action suit they would already be replacing those hybrid motors too. So sorry for ya’ll!

Y’all are kidding yourselves saying a cab off engine swap is a minor undrtaking.
You gotta deal with all the wiring, steering linkage, transmission, A/C and heater hoses (which means purging both systems and then recharging them later), brake lines to the MC, and about ten dozen other items. There are checklists for all this, but it’s still a multiday service and many will leave the service bay missing a few bolts.

To those that crapped all over Consumer Reports and insisted there was nothing amiss at Toyota Alabama, my hope for you is you will reflect and reconsider.

Anyhow deposit is in on the Land Cruiser 250. Maybe Ill be back someday. In the meantime good luck and god bless!

Who gets to keep the old, possibly perfectly fine engine?
