Sorry about your motor..., assume since you are Hybrid, you are getting the rebuild treatment and not a fresh swap? Nuts that they somehow get away with this, with the flimsy "motive" power claim...

 

I'd also point out that I haven't found a shred of evidence that the 15 to 2.5 years shift of tenure is even true. I'm reading that the average tenure for Toyota employees is 9.4 years as of 2024, which is much higher than the industry average.

That’s not exactly correct. The law of the land in many states is simply “slower traffic keep right,” and there is no caveat of “unless you’re doing the speed limit, then hang out in the left lane all you want” or “you only need to yield the left lane drivers behind you as long they’re not going faster than you think they should be.”

It simply means people going faster than you have the right of way in the left lane.

Absolutely zero drivers in Tennessee adhere to this by the way. It’s get on the highway, get as far left as you can, and camp there until your exit is less than 1/4 mile away, then nearly cause several accidents changing multiple lanes at once to exit the highway.

 

Very true. It was refreshing driving (riding motorcycles) in Europe where people actually take driving seriously and pay attention, especially on the autobahn where the left lane is always clear and when you do pass, you do it quickly and deliberately, then get your ass back in the right lane where it belongs.

PS No one here in Canada drives like that either, it's more "It's MY RIGHT to drive here", most people have given up trying to educate the uneducatable (is that a word), and simply pass on the right. Super frustrating and dangerous when you see how it can and should work.

 

Again, not to belabor the point, but I was specifically talking about the laws in certain states that require slow moving vehicles to pull over to the side of the road, where there is adequate room, to allow stacked up traffic behind them to go by. They apply to 2-lane highways (one lane each way) that have no passing lanes. But they don't apply to vehicles that are driving the speed limit. There is no requirement to pull off the road, just to let speeders by, if you are going the speed limit, unless it's for law enforcement or emergency vehicles.

I completely agree that on multi-lane highways you should always stay right unless you are passing. And you are correct, very few people adhere to that basic rule.

I’m less concerned with how many miles before a motor eats a bearing at this point, than I am with how miles are these motors going to go as an average? It will be a few years before we can even start making guesses I think.

At what point, how many miles, do you consider a third gen tundra not worth buying used?

 

Personally I wouldn't buy a used Gen 3 until the average mileage of any model year has 30K miles with only a few reported engine failures due to main bearings. So that means the average 2025 model trucks have about 20K more miles to prove they are worthy.

Based on recent rumors about engine part changes coming next spring. Mid to late year 2026 models are most likely the trucks I'd consider buying new or used.

 

Those that aren't in the left lanes are in the right lanes...on their cell phones. Tennessee doesn't enforce the "Hands-Free Law" so you're pretty much screwed getting around East, Middle, and West TN.

 

You ask two pretty good questions IMO. How long will they last and how far back would you go?
For me, I never have and will not buy a used pick-up of any type. It's just too hard to tell how they've been used and they don't depreciate enough in the early going to make it worth while to me. Compare to a high end Audi, Benz or BMW that depreciates like an anvil going out a window. It makes more sense to buy those guys used. Assuming I would buy a used one, I would buy one outside of the recall but expect an incremental discount on a '23.

Who the hell knows how long they last. In other applications, longevity doesn't seem to be diminished. There used to be a couple of guys on the forum that had 100K plus on 2022's without issue. My complete guess is the motor will become problematic about the time the rest of the truck falls apart. A perfectly maintained GMC Denali 2500 with the 6.6 I drive a lot just dropped the Allison transmission last week at 60K. I would have thought that was a 200K last a long time truck. I guess not.
