Just my opinion but I always felt that the date range of the engine recall had more to do with preventing a stop sale on trucks on the lot than what model years were truly impacted by whatever is causing the engine issues in general.

I admit to being a Toyota fanboy but I'm just too cynical of business in general to think otherwise.

    Agree.

IMO this is likely the bean counters calculating the chances of a major accident or worse versus the financial and PR disaster of having thousands of Tundras sitting on their own “ice mountain.” We all know how that turned out for Ford with the Bronco the semi conductor shortage (and the bevy of major issues Ford deal with with the roll out). Bronco sales tanked, thousands of cancelled orders, prices crashed, and horrible press.

Not to mention the Tundra is the only high $ product they actually have in stock. It would crush revenue / cash flow.

    Wow...

Happens to the best of us.

Did he do oil analysis prior and did it show any clues?

I’ll ask but I doubt it. He shared it’s been an awful experience with Toyota corporate - if he had an oil analysis showing anything I think he would have said so.

I’m sure he will but it sounds like it will be many months without a full-size truck which I’m sure is a huge PITA, especially the day the payment is due every month.

This, when I’m driving around a Corolla or Prius because that’s the only loaner available -___- yet that car payment still comes due. Between mountain biking and hunting, I need my truck

Not sure when it happened - but pics are now up of the tear down. Not a good look for Toyota - that’s for sure.

After seeing the chad, do you now think it could be a debris cleaning issue after all?

I honestly don’t know enough about the design of the engine to say for sure - but that kind of looks like water jacket. If it is oil passage - it’s disturbing but doesn’t explain trucks with 62 miles failing last week or all the other trucks failing outside the recall window. They announced the debris issue in early-mid 2023?

Nope .... unless there is more debris in other areas causing oil starvation because pictures posted looks like return oil to pan. But I don't claim to be an expert and shit happens.

This is the timeline per their document on NHTSA. A good read. Kaizen assumes they tightened the cleaning process right through May 2024.

    Lots of stuff!
I can only imagine that large flapper coming loose over time and clogging up the pathway.

Not really debris yet until it comes loose and travels. This could explain why it takes a while for the engines to seize.

At this point, in my amateur opinion. seems a lot more likely that the bearing is flaking apart… which explains the Blackstone oil analysis elevated silver and when it really starts to fragment… the catastrophic engine failure. IMO that bearing material circulating through the system fries the turbos (resulting in strange turbo behavior seen) eventually blocks the oil passages and starves the motor of lubrication. Makes a new long block the only solution IMO.

For a long time that date was spring 2023 - alluded here.

that’s when it was deemed the 2024 MY would be safe. Obviously that wasn’t the case.

Where are all the metallurgical engineers at? We need to get some metals engineer a failed bearing and a new part number bearing and get some expert analysis. But the idea that this is machining debris is becoming more and more farfetched. I mean, if the ‘24 really ends up having the same failure as a ‘22, even with the “new part number” bearing, Toyota has an even bigger problem on their hands. I hope that’s not the case.

Are you interpreting this to say the cleaning process took place after February 2023?

I am not reading it that way from the NHTSA document. I read it that the cleaning process was implemented in February and they continued to research. I have not seen any document from Toyota that says they changed the cleaning process a second time.

    Read under September 2023 - January 2024

Last sentence in the second paragraph.

"It also continued to assess the effectiveness of the manufacturing process changes implemented earlier."

This is Kaizen. Continuous improvement. If they are assessing the effectiveness, they would also be making changes if the assessment necessitated them.

I’m also reading between the lines/assuming the ‘good’ engines they inspected covered all production periods/months. After the research of good and bad engines until May ‘24, they concluded engines produced after the cleaning improvements 2/23 had acceptable debris.
It doesn’t explain why failures continue. But they do seem to have slowed.
