Really sorry to hear that, gang! But I'll be honest, this could make for a great movie with few additional plot details bolted on! Especially the way you typed it out. Thank you!

my tundra is at 79K kilometres. Goes in for engine recall replacement on Monday. Has there been any issues with the new engines? Same power/fuel mileage?

right in line with not Ryan's info about when the cleaning process actually got solved.

still all speculation, but makes sense to me anyways, especially since they shit canned the guy in charge of it sometime around late summer ish I thought.

When was it solved? Doesn't look like it was solved. Sorry if I missed it. Been following this thread closely.

This is the 4th installment (in 2 years) of the “it’s been resolved” collection from Toyota’s engine design team, so color me skeptical.

It hasn't been really "solved". Partially mitigated / improved - yes. Fully resolved - no.
Toyota doesn't care. They know that:
    1) Future is electric. 6 new EV models in 2026, more to follow soon after
    2) Tundra is only relevant for the US (and a little bit Canada) market, and even here it's a minuscule fraction of the full-size pickup market. Too small to care compared with the rest of their business. Prius, RAV4, Camry - these are priority vehicles for Toyota. Tundra could disappear from Toyota's lineup anytime and only 0.01% of car buyers would care.

Lexus GX, LX, flagship high ticket vehicles for Toyota. Big sellers and popular in the middle east, I would think Toyota would like to maintain THAT market.

IDK, it’s the flagship motor in their flagship vehicles for the North American market. The LX, LS, GX, Tundra, and Sequoia. Those are the high margin vehicles that make Toyota money. With the rollback of EPA regulations recently, not sure how much of a market they’re will be for electric in the next 5-10 years in most of the USA anyway. Without the big incentives, I just don’t see electric vehicles standing on their own at this point.

Most luxury car buyers don't consider reliability as a high priority. They want performance, comfort and "bling". Most have other vehicles to rely upon if their GX or LX needs a repair, or just get a nice loaner from Lexus. And I'm sure that Toyota prioritizes the repairs of Lexus vehicles over Toyota. So a Tundra owner may have to wait months for a new engine, while a Lexus owner's vehicle gets fixed in a few days.
I have both Toyota and Lexus vehicles, and the difference in customer service is gigantic. When I take my wife's Lexus for a simple oil change, I get a nice loaner (brand new Lexus) for the whole day - the only thing missing is a massage and a BJ, but I'm sure they would offer one for a major repair.

I disagree about electric vehicles. Our power grid is 15-20 years away from handling anything close to what would be needed. Hybrids? Another story. They are strong and working well everywhere. EXCEPT in a utility vehicle such as our Tundras. The Prius, Corolla and Camry are easily rock solid platforms. None of them would ever pull a camper across states on vacations.

I don’t think so personally. Lexus’ entire brand was built on being “almost” or “near” luxury without the reliability headaches. The LS400 defined that segment and the LS460 continued the tradition. Ive owned both E300s and a LS460… agree that the Lexus service department is a better experience.

Thought I would share. 2022 Tundra, new engine going in May 4. 36000 miles on the current one. Said it will take one day.

Just had mine done at Vancouver Toyota.

Called me on a Thursday and had me in on Monday. Was supposed to be a 3 day swap, but it took an extra day because they broke my fan shroud during the process and had to replace it. I ended up with a 2025 Tundra for my rental, which is better than I expected.

Overall I am happy with everything. They didn't clean/detail it at all like some others have mentioned in this thread at other dealers, but that is typical for Vancouver Toyota, all they do is vacuum the floormats.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. Good to hear from someone that had it done at our dealership. Did yours fail or was it just your turn?

Just my turn. I am at 35k and was hoping I could have put it off a little longer, but oh well.

I have been thinking about mileage and failure rates and if you can be “out of the woods” at any mileage so I referred to the closest thing we have to actual data, Voldemort’s (the one who shall not be named) spreadsheet. I took 10k mile increments and counted failures. So 0-10k, 10-20 etc. all the way up to 86k or whatever the highest one on there is. It definitely seems like failures peak right at the average failure point but then drop off rapidly after that to the point where there are zero failures from 70-80k miles and only the highest one between 70-80k.

I understand there is no real value in doing this as a lot of trucks might not have reached that high a mileage but I found it interesting and I was bored so I counted.

Thanks for counting, I was thinking of doing something similar a few days ago, wish you could copy values from the spreadsheet to do some of your own calcs. So I guess if you're not included in the recall and have more than say 40k then you have one of the good ones and can quit worrying.

Correct. The further you get away from the average mileage at failure, the better off you should be. It's basically a bell curve, which matches what Toyota is seeing internally.

Any chance you could divulge whether the main bearings contain silver yet?

More like 50 years……speaking from some experience. data centers are eating up electric power at an alarming rate also.

It's my turn for the engine swap! This afternoon I dropped off my truck at Edmark Toyota in Nampa, ID and got a 2025 Tacoma TRD Pro as a loaner. It's a nice one but the lack of a grab handle on the driver side makes it difficult for a shorty like me to enter. Another interesting feature is the rear view mirror. It's not a glass mirror but a digital mirror shaped monitor. Interesting idea but it gives me a headache when I look at it. Definitely not a fan.

Pretty sure limited trim and higher has this digital display mirror in the Tundra as well. The camera is located in the 3rd brake light if I’m not mistaken.

@Jigenax Flip the lever (lower middle) and it converts to a normal rear view. Good for a wide view in heavy traffic, but it does take my eyes a second to refocus when using it at night.

You can also get in on SR5 with premium package option. I have it and love it. It took a bit of time to adjust to it but I will never go back to a standard mirror if I have a choice.
