I have a Yukon with the lifter fail engine in it. No issues so far, but heres what the difference between GMC and Toyota is, even if I am negative towards "new toyota" as I call it.

GMC does NOT have any replacement engines ready, they have NOT done a voluntary recall and it looks like the feds will have to FORCE a fix. This has been going on a couple years before the Toyota stuff started, and it still isn't dealt with. When your GMC goes down, you are in trouble and there isn't backup stock to replace it. The wait is a long long time. At least Toyota has owned it, wether people think the fix is a long term solution or not. We love the Yukon, but I've been really hoping there is some movement here soon before we find out about this failure the hardway.

Same ... my truck was built 8/26/2023 (Thanks @bobbilly ) yet my previous 16 Plat also had a 08/16 build date (not sure exact day) and was a 2016 Model not 2017 ...so not sure if August is split ?

My truck is an 8/22 build date as a 2022 model. Somewhere in there must be the split. I don’t have the final day of the month to help determine the split.

There may not be a hard cutover date each year.

There will be factors, days of inventory, parts supply, model year changes, etc.

Well that sucks. However, hopefully it slows down significantly for the later builds.

I don't think we'll ever know the true story with this alleged "manufacturing debris" issue, and when it was actually resolved, if ever.

It certainly wasn't resolved when Toyota claims, based on the number of failures to engines that were built after the recall dates.

Not sure why we should trust anything from Toyota, since they also claimed hybrids have "motive power" after their gas engine fails, and that's why they aren't included in the safety recall. We've learned that's demonstrably false.

It's definitely a mystery ... I think it's the thermal expansion coefficient of dissimilar metals. Something is causing a dimension change/movement between bearing and crankshaft where that thin film of pressurized oil is not being maintained. But what do I know because I'm just a bud lite drinking armchair observer hoping Toyota solves the issue.

The recall documents (defect information report) clearly state that they continued analyzing parts and investigating the issue until 5/24 and came to the final conclusion about the problem then.

Whatever the relevant changes they made to the parts or manufacturing, had to be after 5/24 when they had a full picture about the problem at hand. I would think it likely took several months after 5/24 when things were finally corrected.

What worries me having a 2024 built in August of 2023 is will that be a factor when I trade this in next year?
2022 and early 2023 will/could get crate engines. Late 2023s and 2024s are not covered under the recall so they raise a big question: If they fail under drive train warranty do they get a short block replacement?
I wouldn’t want to buy a vehicle in this nebulous circumstance.

As I understand it, yes, failed engines that aren't covered under the safety recall are only getting short block repairs. Which leaves all of 2023 and most of 2024 trucks potentially at risk for the inferior repair.

I've maintained for months that Toyota will eventually expand the safety recall to include hybrids and trucks built thru 2024. It seems to be the only fair and legally less risky solution for them. I could be wrong.

Either way, I think trade-in values of Gen 3 Tundras are going to be adversely affected by this for a long time. Even trucks with full engine swaps will suffer from the stigma of this recall, and other perceived quality and reliability issues.

I would bet the short block bs is going to see a lot of second failures, just too much to go wrong, parts all over the place, etc.

What a shame that this thread still lives on. What’s crystal clear at this point is this: Toyota cares more about pumping out new Tundras, Sequoias and GXs than they do about fixing the problem with the 3.4TT. Toyota is going to have to stack incentives like 0% financing and 35%+ discounts to get buyers like me interested at this point given the low resale and potential headaches of a new truck getting a short block replacement. I’d have to guess the 3.5 gen Tundra will have a redesigned motor. And a guy can dream… but maybe the 5.7 will make a come back as emissions regulations are relaxed. Id buy a 3rd gen with the 5.7 tomorrow if Toyota would sell it to me.

While I agree with a lot of what you said. The reality is this.

3rd gen is the best selling truck Tundra has EVER made. EVER, hands down not even close. The 2nd/2.5 gen's best years are the 3rd gens worst. They don't care about you not buying their truck. They don't care I won't either.

too bad, you guys are missing out on an awesome truck.

but your right woods, toyota is selling a bunch of tundras, they don't care about a few holds outs, neither would you or I if we were running the place.

Yep - cheapen the product and slap really high MSRPs on so you can mark it down / incentivize purchases and still make money. It’s the game the domestics have played for years and years with their trucks and SUVs. What’s different about the 3rd gen is that Toyota has had to use rebates and other incentives heavily to move the product. And as the 3rd gen gets longer in the tooth, TFS won’t be able to dump off extra trucks with cheap leases through Ally and other leasing companies like they did in the last couple years of the 2.5 gen.
