That is true, but that is not machining debris.

    Nope.

And where are you sending the oil for analysis? Please don't say Blackstone.

Both are factual, but it has yet to be seen if these are going to improve the QDR.

Hoping my '25 received a good one.

I've been following this issue casually since it emerged, I understood it was 22-23 models.... I guess time will tell. Nothing to do now but enjoy the truck.

I'll bargain shop dealers for the extended service agreement before the 36mos runs out.

It’s for sure 22-24’s now. And possibly some 2025’s.

On Monday, I expect to buy a 2022 Tundra SR5 crewmax from a Toy dealer. I believe they have yet to order the replacement engine, but they said it could take from a week to a month to get and install it. How many of you are waiting, and when are your engines projected to be delivered and installed?

Are they giving you a killer discount for the fact that the work has not been performed? Otherwise I'd tell them to call me when it's been replaced.

Yes, killer deal so we'll buy it now and wait. After all, I already have two great Toyota trucks, both heading to 500K.

If I were to wait, they'd likely up the price substantially or some other lucky sucker would get it. More details later....

What’s your manufacture month? They’re doing it in phases so many of us are waiting. Assuming it’s running fine just enjoy it until your phase it up, that’s what I’m doing.

Maybe, but I suspect that now the dealer has it and it's on the rack awaiting an engine, it could be a liability issue. I will know more this week.

The mfg date is June 2022. Just guessing but the dealer may be able to assert priority in the queue for a replacement engine.

I'm willing to wait. Both the '03 Tundra and the 1985 pickup are in top shape, able to start on first crank in sub-zero temps.

I won't thumb through the previous 139 pages but will be interested in any new engine replacements reported here. I'm also curious what the post-replacement protocol is for oil changes.

The post-replacement protocol from my Toyota dealer is; first 5,000 miles take it in for free oil change, after that back to every 10,000 intervals, out of pocket.

It seemed like his videos weren’t really made for anyone except Toyota. Fishing for a job and telling them all the great things he could do for them. I appreciated the input he had while he was on here but seeing and hearing him talk for 30 min wasn’t good. Repeating himself numerous times and making some really bold claims. Made me wonder how factual some of the “facts” he shared on here were.

I have been following the Tundra engine fiasco from the beginning, including all the information provided by Ryan. I highly respect and think that information given by Ryan was true, at least to his knowledge and understanding. However, any single piece of information and fact needs to be taken in with context. Making deductions based on one or two pieces of information is very naive. As I mentioned earlier, the Tundra engine failures are highly unlikely to be due to one single issue. Is it the design alone? I don't think so. Is it the debris alone? I done think so. Is it the design + debris alone? I do not think so. But like anything else, it is more likely to be due to several factors compounding together. If the 2 reasons mentioned above were the sole cause, all produced engines during the production period would fail. We know that's not true.

At the end of the day, the Achilles heel of this engine is high output + small tolerances + old production methods = bearing failure. Work this engine hard, you are bound to fail. Anything in the middle that changes the above equation, most important factor being the load placed on the engine during use, can prolong or shorten the life of these engines. For example, careful break in, early break-in oil change, use of higher viscosity oil can positively affect the equation. But if you like extracting all the performance available, non of the above will matter, and failure is inevitable.

I owned a 2013 4Runner. I suspect Toyota kept the same production methods for that car and this new Tundra. But any of you guys driven the 4Runner? 4.0 liter, dog of an engine. The load and pressures the 4.0 4Runner engine bearings see, is likely 1/10th of what the current Tundra bearings see.
And yes, the is my subjective opinion, lol.

I was following along until high output and tight tolerances. Tight tolerances is what Toyota does and always has , I don’t think that’s it . Just my worthless .02 of bs

if that were a cause , we’d see way more, there is what gaining on 500k of these on the road now?

still a small amount of failures

now, that said , Toyota still needs to get the poop in a group regarding this for sure

interesting to see how this plays out longer term

Took a picture of one of the largest metal piece I collected during my 1st oil change. Looks like a melted piece of metal, about 1.5mm. Looks like a product of break-in, rather than prior machine debris, given the melted appearance.

I think the place cleaning the blocks needs to be blown up and start over

I tend to think not Ryan is correct and that cleaning process was never really fixed.

more worthless speculation but wth :burp:

So, can someone clarify exactly what is being replaced in this engine recall? Is the recall solely for the engine block without any attached components like lines, hoses, clamps, fuel pumps, belts, bolts, emissions paraphernalia and the mouse chewed foam over the head? How can this be done without F-ing things up?

What has typically been replaced? Anyone seeing charges for parts?

I am just curious where this sentiment of tight tolerances came about regarding Toyota? To my knowledge, it was a myth that was introduced in the forums during the switch to 0w20 viscosity. I really would like to know, see and be proven wrong about this.

I just had my engine replaced. I can comment on belts and turbos: they are new. Some of the hoses & clamps appear new, while others have been reused. It is a long block assembly with most components assembled.

I don’t have the time to go digging for facts at the moment but it’s well known for a long time . Examples over the years of all the way down to guys who worked at companies that made parts commented when Toyota ordered compared to the others the tolerances were way tighter , etc

when I get more time and can go back and dig , but it’s pretty well known

This is what get's replaced on the engine swaps. Basically it's everything except a few stand-alone parts, like the alternator, radiator, etc....
